Project Ragna Rok was one of a number of doomsday initiatives sponsored by Adolf Hitler when he came to believe that Nazi Germany faced possible defeat during the final years of World War II]]. Thus, projects were created with the intention of bringing about Nazi victory through either scientific or even occult means. Amongst these projects was Ragna Rok "The Fatal Destiny" that was created when Grigori Rasptun approached Heinrich Himmler following his meditations in Italy. Himmler himself led a group of Nazi occultists that were buildings weapons of mass destruction and Rasputin came to see potential in Haupstein, Kurtz as well as Kroenen. Afterwards, Grigori Rasputin worked to assemble them as part of his Ragna Rok project and promised Hitler a "miracle" that would turn the tide of the war. However, secretly, Rasputin intended to use this project as a means of bringing about an apocalyptic event that would create a new Eden.
On 23rd December 1944, the project began to enter its final phase on a small island off the Scottish coast by the name of Tarmagant Island. Project Ragna Rok intended to call forth a key in bringing an apocalypse from Hell but a complication emerged when this key instead emerged in a ruined church by East Bromwich, England. An added obstacle was the fact that the key that took the form of massive stone right hand on an infant demon was instead recovered by the Allies. The right hand of this demon that would become known as Hellboy became a much desired goal for Project Ragna Rok. However, Von Krupt viewed ths project a failure and the team was officially disbanded. In the aftermath, Rasputin journeyed to the Arctic Circle as he sought a long lost temple of the Ogdru Jahad whilst his comrades in the project namely Haupstein, Kurtz and Kroenen were cryogenically frozen until Grigori had need of them once more.
