Overview
Boomers come in many shapes and sizes, dependent on the jobs for which they are required. Produced mainly by the Genom Corporation, Boomers serve as maids, waiters, bodyguards, store mannequins, and military weapons. Some, like the Sexaroid model of Boomer, have gained sentience and developed minds of their own, but most are simply machines. Boomers are capable of appearing human, whether male or female, but tend to 'burst' out of their synthetic skin in combat situations, revealing their true selves - giant, metallic killing machines armed with built-in lasers, machine guns, and arm blades capable of cleaving through a fire hydrant.
Often, a Boomer which is running down or malfunctioning (whether by accident, or planned by the Genom Corporation) loses control of itself, and goes on a murderous rampage. Due to the heavy armour and powerful weapon systems that many Boomers carry or are able to "grow", casualties tend to run high during such incidents. To date, only the AD Police and the armoured vigilantes known as the Knight Sabers have had any luck in stopping these creatures.
In Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, it is inevitable that a Boomer will go rogue due to its very design. Boomers will break free of their programming and gain self awareness, being able to break free of their limited form as well: they had their forms and programming restricted as a way of stopping this, but it failed (revealed in Episode 19). In at least one case (a waitress Boomer in Episode 3), this appears to have occurred due to mistreatment by humans.
Some Boomers in 2040 are remotely controlled by humans rather than operating on their own, such as the Moto Slave series. These were introduced in Episode 7, here, a deep-sea Boomer went rogue after the death of its operator and, driven by his memories and emotions regarding his wife, went to his home in Tokyo. The Knight Sabers' armoured suits are also a form of Boomer, as is the second model of Priss' armoured motorcycle, also called Motoslave (and which showed sentience and communicated to her in the final episode). Episodes 9 and 10 introduced an insectoid monster that hunted and ate Boomers under the streets of Tokyo, which was the results of the early stages of the Boomer project.
In AD Police: To Serve and Protect, they are known as VOOMERS, short for "VOo-doo Organic Metal Extension Resource".
