History

It happened to be the severed head of one of the Celestials. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1)

People came to Knowhere to study and inspect in order to observe the end of the universe from the closest available platform. (Nova v4 #8)

Currently, the station was being used as headquarters for the Guardians of the Galaxy and was facilitated by both Cosmo and Richard Rider. (Inside Look: Guardians of the Galaxy #1 by DnA, Broken Frontier, May 21, 2008])

During the Skrull Secret Invasion, a group of them struck at Knowhere where they detonated a bomb at the Continuum Cortex leading to the death of several beings along with damaging the teleportation mechanism. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #4)

Overview

Knowhere's location made it a perfect location for an interdimensional crossroads as well as an observatory for the End of the Universe as it bordered along The Rip. It also served as a port of call for various intergalactic travellers and has since been protected by its chief of security, Cosmo the Spacedog. In addition, it possessed minor facilities for closer observations of the end of the universe as well as a main hall, marketplace, and a bar called Starlin's. Travellers at the station were required to wear Cosmo's special "passport" bracelets which allowed instant teleportation to and from anywhere in the universe. This was accomplished through the Celestial heads "Continuum Cortex" that was located near its brain-stem through which sensors detected subtle disturbances in space-time that occured in the vicinity of The Rip.

People came to the Knowhere due to its location being by the Rip and was where space as well as time met along with all the dimensions of reality. It meant that people came from all of space and time along with all kinds of species. (Nova v4 #8) As such, it served as an interdimensional crossroads that was a meeting place or nexus that was adrift in The Rip on the outer edges of space-time. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1)

Though deceased, the Celestial's cerebellum contained a dormant brain core with certain ghost functions still maintaining it. It was able to keep aware of events within itself which could be sensed through its thoughts. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #5) Through the Continuum Cortex, rapid transit was capable of going anywhere in the universe through the use of the wearers 'passport' bracelets. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #1)

It was headed by an administrative council headed by an elected chairperson who was supported by a deputy and had its own laws. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #4) A group of vigilantes called the Knowhere Corps operated who sought to ensure order was maintained. (Guardians of the Galaxy v4 #5)

Knowhere was held as being a scientific community with delegations from hundreds of races gathering at the place. (Guardians of the Galaxy v2 #4)

Notes

  • Knowhere was created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning where it made its first appearance in Nova v4 #8 (January 2008).
  • According to an An Interview With Nova's Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning!, they commented on Knowhere's creation by stating "Honestly, they just came to us. The severed Celestial head was, I think, something that popped out of Andy's mind one day. Similarly, one morning, I said "what about a talking Russian dog?" We run with these things and develop them together. It's hard to pin down where exactly they originate."
  • In regards to history of the floating Celestial head, it was said in Lost In Space: Nova #9 "A mystery that will have to wait for now, but it's a biggie!"

Alternate Versions

  • In Guardians of Knowhere v1 (2015), a version of Knowhere survived the Final Incursion and became the moon of Battleworld. It was said to be the fallen head of a Celestial that long ago came to Battleworld to conquer it only for it to be slain by God Emperor Doom who made its remains into a moon.
