Edwin Jarvis

Edwin Jarvis is a male comic character that features in Marvel Comics.

Biography

Edwin Jarvis

During World War II, he was a boy when he had a friend named Watson who was a few years older than him. Watson was athletic who drank a gallon of milk a day until he was called to fight in the frontlines. When he was gone, his mother Mrs. Watson continued making orders of milk to be delivered for her son despite him being gone with her husband unable to drink so much of it. One day, the family received news that their son had gone down in enemy lines but Mrs. Watson simply doubled the milk order deliveries. The young Jarvis later asked her why she continued with the milk deliveries to which she responded by saying that when he son returned he would be very thirsty and wanting his drinks of milky. Two years later, her son was discovered to be alive and had returned home thus proving his mother right that he had survived the war with this being an event Jarvis always remembered. (Daredevil v1 #358)

He offered support to a young Tony Stark when the boy was scolded by his father for being upset about the destruction of one of his creations. (Iron Man: Legacy v1 #1) After the death of Stark's parents, Jarvis dealt with the reporters that came at the doorstep of the family residence where he stated that Tony had no statements at this time. (Iron Man: Legacy v1 #3)

His charge Maria Santiago later was being sent by her village on a school trip to New York with Jarvis notifying the Avengers that he would be taking some time off to meet her at the airport. He waited the Aeroverde International arrivals lounge when the plane was attacked by mercenaries working for Moses Magnum. Jarvis went to contact the Avengers and witnessed a new hero emerge from the wrecked plane with this being Silverclaw. When the Avengers arrived, Silverclaw attacked them and eventually the mercenaries from Magnum Munitions managed to escape after completing their goals. In the chaos, Jarvis went to find any trace of Santiago when he learnt that Silverclaw was his charge and he was relieved that she was still alive. The heroes learnt that she had been coerced into helping Magnum as the mercenaries threatened to kill everyone on the plane and she apologised for her actions. (Avengers v3 #8)

At some point, he was kidnapped by the Skrulls and replaced with an infiltrator disguised as him who was tasked with ensuring their invasion efforts in the future. (Secret Invasion v1 #8) With the formation of a new incarnation of the Avengers, this sleeper agent was called to assist them as the team decided to use Stark Towers as their headquarters. (New Avengers v1 #3)

With Veranke's demise, the Skrulls were defeated and a ship landed that contained all the captive people of Earth including Jarvis. His arrival led to Jessica Jones realising that she had left her daughter Danielle Cage in the care of the Skrull agent who had escaped with the baby girl. (Secret Invasion v1 #8)

He later was called by Tony Stark to help in the support of his new Avengers team. (All-New, All-Different Avengers v1 #4)

This incident caused Jarvis to feel alone with the one thing alleviating this sense was the idea that other people who orbited the lives of superheroes went through a similar experience. Thus, he decided to create a support network of friends and loved ones that lived alongside superheroes with this an anonymous area where they could help one another. Janet van Dyne provided the name of Lookups with Tony Stark and Doctor Strange both providing means to ensure that the people attending were all anonymous so that their loved ones identities or other secrets were not exposed. He later came to invite Mary Jane Watson and offered it as a place for her in case she wanted to talk with others about her experiences. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #9) Jarvis was then recruited by King T'Challa after the Black Panther was made the chairman of the newest incarnation of the Avengers. T'Challa believed the group required an extensive support network to aid in its operations with Edwin Jarvis being part of the Agents of Wakanda when the superheroes were based at Avengers Mountain. (Avengers v8 #12)

Jarvis came to sponsor a young girl from a remote mountain village in Costa Verde with this being Maria de Guadalupe Santiago where he sent part of his salary to her. (Avengers v3 #8)

• Edwin Jarvis was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck where he made his first appearance in Tales of Suspense v1 #59 (November, 1964).

• In Agent Carter, the character was introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he operated as the butler to Howard Stark and was portrayed by actor James D'Arcy.

Films

• In Ultimate Avengers, the character made an appearance in the animated movie where he was voiced by actor Fred Tatasciore.
• In Iron Man, the character did not appear but was instead adapted into the artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. that was used by Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
• In Avengers: Endgame, Edwin Jarvis made an appearance in he live-action film where he was portrayed once again by actor James D'Arcy.

• In Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth, Edwin Jarvis appeared in the 2015 wii video game where he had been replaced with a Skrull during the Secret Invasion and had introduced a computer virus that disabled S.H.I.E.L.D.
