Grimoire (Black Clover)

Grimoires are objects that feature in Black Clover.

History

Grimoire (Japanese: 魔道書グリモワール, Hepburn: Gurimowāru) were mystical tomes that selected those with magic power and provided them access to a variety of spells.

Many years ago, the Devil Zagred intended to manifest his true body in the physical world and orchestrated an intricate plan to corrupt the leader of the Elf Tribe named Licht.

The Diamond Kingdom came to conduct experiments to enhance their mages' magical power. The last experiment involved the class of test subjects waging a battle royale with only the one survivor allowed to leave and become a Mage Warrior. One of those involved was Fana who was near dead when the head scientist Moris Libardirt experimented on her by embedding mage stones in her and piecing together her grimoire with Mars. However, Moris came to be dissatisfied with the results of his experiments and abandoned Fana to die. Meanwhile, Mars came to be the sole survivor of the experiment with the researchers embedding mage stones into him whilst similarly also merging Fana's fire affinity into Mars as his grimoire becomes a patchwork of both of their grimoires. As an elite Mage Warrior, he came to be chosen to join the ranks of the Eight Shining Generals.

Overview

In appearance, Grimoires were mystical books that greatly enhanced their user's ability to use magic. They served as a written record of all the spells of the user with them growing alongside their owner. New spells were inscribed within the book and filled black pages as the spellcaster acquired a techniques or skills. The tomes were deeply tied to their owners which meant a wizard could not use another person's grimoire.

Normally, spells were written in scripts legible to the mage. Spells may be written in different languages if they draw magic from alternative sources, like devils and spirits. Additionally, Ultimate Magic that draws power from natural mana results in pages filled with runes.

When in use, a grimoire levitatesdeither in front of or beside its owner and follows the mage wherever they go. When the grimoire owner activates a spell, the pages in the grimoire turn on their own until turning to the page containing the spell that the mage intends to use. The grimoire will no long respond to the owner if it is taken or separated from the owner over a far distance. When not in use, grimoires are most often carried in satchels attached to the mages' belts or strapped to their chests or legs. While there are designers for grimoire satchels, poorer citizens tend to make their own.

A Grimoire's power was denoted by the number of clover leaves that were shown on its cover. The more leaves meant that a Grimoire had chosen a powerful magic user with 4-leaf clover Grimoires being rare. Each of the leaves represented different qualities with three leaf clovers embodying fate, hope and love. In a rare 4-leaf clover, the fourth was said to symbolise luck. Within a 5-leaf clover, the fifth leaf was claimed to hold the Devil in them. In reality, the Devil was real and was a primary means through which they could manifest in the physical world. By causing a 4-leaf wielder to fall into despair, their tome transformed into a Grimoire of Despair (絶望の魔導書 グリモワール, Zetsubō no Gurimowāru) allowing them to become possessed by a Devil who then used them to manifest their true powers.

When a person was a teenager, they took part in the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony where they went into a library filled with the tomes. Once there, they were chosen by a grimoire thus giving them access to a full range of magical spells. Before being claimed by their rightful owners, grimoires are stored in grimoire towers (魔導書グリモワール塔 gurimowāru-tō), special libraries scattered around the kingdoms and overseen by tower masters (塔主 tō-shu). Once a person has turned 15 years old, they can attend the annual Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony in March in order to receive their grimoire.[29][30][12] A mage who misses the ceremony after their fifteenth birthday can travel to any grimoire tower and receive their grimoire individually at any time.
