Biography
Nnoitra Gilga (Japanese: ノイトラ・ジルガ, Hepburn: Noitora Jiruga; Viz: Nnoitora Gilga) was originally a Hollow who came to evolve into an Arrancar. Years ago, he came to join the ranks of the Espada where he held the 8th rank in the organization. At some point, he was given the task of seeking out Vasto Lorde by Sōsuke Aizen where he was dispatched alongside Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck. This saw him laying waste to an entire colony of Hollows which drew the attention of Nelliel who asked him why he did so as they received no such order. However, Nnoitra said that nothing in their orders went against killing Hollows in the search for Vasto Lordes and that he simply killed rebels as it simply benefited Aizen. He continued to debate with Nelliel about these principles until he was assaulted and knocked out. When he awoke, he discovered she was reading a book next to him, with a dead Hollow nearby. He inquired as to why she assisted him, and Nelliel simply stated that she did not 'assist him.' By putting a halt to his suicidal conduct, she merely saved the Espada from losing a member. Nnoitra emphasized that he despises her and that she would understand why she would continue to follow him around. She would simply stare at him and said that it was because he was weaker than her. He would repeatedly challenge the then-3rd Espada Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck to battle at this time, and she would easily defeat him each time. She wanted to leave during one of these confrontations, and he warned her it was a fight to the finish. When she inquired whether he wanted her to finish him off, she said she flatly refused and urged him to stop talking so loudly. She claimed that there was a point in their lives when they lost their humanity and turned into animals. However, Nelliel believed that they had regained their sense of reason after becoming Arrancar. She explained to him that reasonable people needed a purpose to fight when they go into battle, and that he did not have one. Nnoitra simply yelled at her claiming that he had a reason and that he could not stand her. The reasoning behind this stemmed from Nelliel simply seeing Nnoitra as a beast and did not recognise him as a warrior as he fought with instinct. As a result, she did not see the need to take the life of a person who she did not consider to be warrior. Tesla approached Nnoitra after Nelliel had left and given him a hand which was when he threw his Zanpakutp at him in retaliation, hitting the structure behind the Arrancar. Nnoitra warned him against being nice to him, claiming that just because he had lost did not imply they were on the same level. Nnoitra stated to Tesla why he chose Nelliel and not another Espada because he despised her for simply being a girl who could outrank a man on the battlefield.
He was present with the other Espada as Wonderweiss Margela was created and as Aizen explained the process of awakening the Hōgyoku from its inert state.
Nnoitra attends Aizen's meeting about Ichigo Kurosaki, Yasutora Sado and Uryū Ishida entering Hueco Mundo to save Orihime Inoue. After Aizen warns the Espada to treat the intruders with caution, Nnoitra comments that they look weak. Tier Harribel warns him that if he had listened to what Aizen just said, he would have heard him state that they should not take the intruders lightly. Nnoitra tells her that is not what he meant and tells her not to get testy before asking her if she is scared. Harribel just gives him a cold stare. Grimmjow interrupts the brewing confrontation by attempting to walk out against Aizen's orders. He, alongside the other Espada, sits silently while Aizen subdues Grimmjow with his Spiritual Pressure to keep him in line. Later, he attempts to start a conversation with Ulquiorra about Orihime Inoue. Nnoitra asks how he is handling her, stating he knows Aizen put him in charge of her. He asks how he is doing 'taming' her, but Ulquiorra ignores him and walks away, calling him degenerate scum. Undeterred, Nnoitra uses Sonído to move in front of him and asks Ulquiorra to not get so testy as he is only asking if everything is going well. Ulquiorra could not comprehend why Nnoitra really cares as it's trivial, but tells him not to worry as Orihime has been under Aizen's spell even before she arrived in Hueco Mundo. Nnoitra then questions if Aizen has used Kyōka Suigetsu as usual, though Ulquiorra assures him that this situation was not that big of an issue to warrant its use. He further explains that the moment that she was invited there, multiple psychological cages were put in place, by putting her friends in danger she was forced into a situation where she couldn't refuse and made her surrender. Following that, they gave her the 12 hour period to say goodbye to one of her friends. Nnoitra still doesn't get the significance of the psychological cage that is being spoken about. Ulquiorra further explains that she is basically set to believe in her own mind that they are not the enemy and then she will follow them of her own free will. He also makes note that allowing her to say goodbye to a friend of her own choosing will allow her to leave evidence of her free will in the event so she will be looked as a traitor to her friends. Finally understanding, Nnoitra states that plan is well thought out and he would expect nothing less of Aizen, though Ulquiorra corrects him stating that such things to Aizen are nothing more than a game. If she is trapped then that is good, if she is not then that is okay as well, as either way she does not have the power to escape from Hueco Mundo or even the will to turn against them.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Nnoitra Gilga was a very tall man with a thin and lanky body where he had black hair that hung past his shoulders that concealed the left side of his face. He frequently sported a huge smile that showed his upper teeth and he had a large white eyepatch with one exposed dark gray eye. His black hair hangs past his shoulders, concealing the left side of his face and a large white eye patch with one exposed dark gray eye. The eye patch hides his mask fragments, consisting of a small set of jawbones and teeth surrounding his Hollow hole. The tattoo signifying his rank as 5th Espada was located on his tongue. His clothing consists of a modified Arrancar. jacket with an overblown spoon-like hood and an opening starting at the neckline, showing most of his midsection, and closing at his waist. He wears the standard hakama but the ends of his pant legs close inside extended and curved boots. When he was the 8th Espada, Nnoitra's hair was shorter and messier, he lacked the spoon hood, and he wore his jacket's collar upturned.
An extremely foul-mouthed man, he was shown as being chauvinistic who openly insulted female fighters.
Gilga looked to prove himself to be the absolute strongest of the Espada and did not wish to waste his time killing those he deemed as being weak.
Nnoitra's idea of a fulfilling end to his life would be to die on his own two feet while drowning in his own blood. He was willing to resort to underhanded means to win and hated people for not killing him as he believed that they did not treat him as an equals.
Powers and abilities
As an Arrancar, Nnoitra Gilga was a powerful humanoid with a range of superhuman abilities that were far greater than any Hollow.
This meant that he also possessed a skin of Hierro (鋼皮 (イエロ), Iero; Spanish for "Iron", Japanese for "Steel Skin";Viz "Iron Skin") which was like heavy armor. By condensing his Reiryoku, he created a steel-hard skin strong enough to block a Zanpakutō. Among the Espada, Gilga waas said to hold the strongest Hierro of all Arrancar allowing him to withstand almost any attack with no sign of injury.
It was shown that he wielded his own Zanpakutō (斬魄刀, Soul-Cutter Sword; Viz "Soul Slayer") that was known as Santa Teresa (聖哭螳螂 (サンタ テレサ), Santa Teresa; a common Spanish language name for "Mantis religiosa," or in English, "Praying Mantis," Japanese for "Holy Wailing Praying Mantis"; Viz "Sacred Screaming Praying Mantis").
Due to being an Arrancar, the greater bulk of his power was sealed away in his sword which he could awaken through his Resurrección (帰刃 (レスレクシオン), Resurekushion; Spanish for "Resurrection", Japanese for "Returning Blade"). To release it, he uttered the command Pray (祈れ, inore) where he gathered spiritual energy which formed a yellow aura around him that created a small shockwave.
He came to join the ranks of the Espada where he rose from the ranks as he was 8th in number but came to be 5th in the hierarchy.
