History

Origin

Clan Akkaba were a secret society that consisted of a lineage of Mutants that were the descendants of En Sabah Nur who was also known as Apocalypse. For thousands of years, they safeguarded the legacy of their lord where they inserted themselves in history where they acted when they were called upon by their patriarch. They were responsible for the burning of Rome, they aided in the culling of thousands by the guillotine during the French Revolution and it was said that they had representation onboard the Mayflower when it reached the New World. At this time the have reproduced and gave birth to the biggest clan they had ever seen in their long history. They gathered many riches and placed themselves in notable and influential positions to better influence and control the world. As the clan grew, it evolved, holding true to its ‘survival of the fittest’ creed, they continued to battle and kill each other to gain Apocalypse’s favor. Although it is unknown what threats they faced early on in the new world. Margaret Slade, the eldest known Akkaba member at the time, noted she had witnessed Apocalypse cut a whole tribe of N'Garai demons to pieces when she was a girl. Being the oldest member of the clan dictated that none of the other members had been born yet. Still chairman Kabar Brashir, who was roughly the age of her eldest son Hamilton, had witnessed the clan summon Apocalypse thirty-six years previously when he was just a boy. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #1)

Long ago, it was said that the human servants of Clan Akkaba came to learn magic and believed this made them on par with Homo Superior. As such, they believed that they would be spared by Apocalypse during the end of days. For this heresy, the magi were purged from the ranks though some managed to survive where they formed a splinter group called Coven Akkaba. (Excalibur v4 #2)

In London 1897, a number of Akkaba members were killed by a mysterious attacker that had arrived in the city. This attracted the attention of Clan Akkaba whereby one of their leading members named Hamilton Slade sought to challenge this foe. Slade was seemingly killed leading to the clan engaging in the awakening of Apocalypse to lead them against this threat. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #1) Upon awakening, he killed one of the Clan as the price for his awakening whereupon Akkaba member Jack Starsmore revealed that he believed the nature of the threat to be Vampires. Despite his status as a Lesser, he came to the council and brought with him the vampire hunter Abraham van Helsing who stated the threat came from Dracula. Ozymandias told his master that this was a former human warlord that Apocalypse had vanquished back during the Crusades. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #2)

The new clan Akkaba came to be assembled under Ozymandias and an elderly Fredrick Slade. This new clan had also revealed that Chamber was a member of their bloodline being a descendant of Jack Starsmore. While the Starsmore family never forgot about Apocalypse, Chamber rejected their offer of membership. (New Excalibur v1 #9)

The Apocalypse Solution

The Clan was later responsible for resurrecting their master Apocalypse in a ceremony and sacrifice that brought him back as a young clone boy. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #1) This child was indoctrinated in the teachings of Apocalypse which was when he was being targeted by X-Force. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #2) To protect the child, the Final Horsemen were summoned by Ozymandias who sought to take the boy to safety on-board Ship. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #3) Deadpool came to hired by Warren Worthington to search for Clan Akkaba, finds a Celestial ship buried underground where the clan kills one of their own during a ritual. Deadpool ends up caught but not before the rest of X-Force are alerted. X-Force is able to rescue Deadpool and defeat the savage creature that attacked him but the temple itself makes a temporal jump forcing the team to retreat. Warren then comments that the creature they defeated was War and not only was the Clan trying to resurrect Apocalypse, but they had also revived his Final Horsemen. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #1)

After the death of Apocalypse the Death Seed in Warren activated and he started his ascension and to become the heir of Apocalypse the Archangel persona becomes in control; due to this, he has taken control of the Clan. He and the Dark Beast traveled to Akkaba Metropolis, a large hidden underground city located underneath the North Pole, established at an unknown point in the past by the Clan Akkaba. After taking the Life Seed from the X-Force that was recurred from the Age of Apocalypse timeline and The World he used them to start a new evolution line in a location after making Genocide kill everyone in it; after seeing the result he wanted to do this to the entire planet so he, the clan and the mutants who sided with him would be seen as Gods for the new evolved creatures. He was seen in bed with Pestilence; when the plan failed and Angel was cured from the Death Seed, Dark Beast takes control of the clan under the instruction of Archangel and Pestilence was revealed to be pregnant from Archangel.

The Apocalypse Twins later travelled into the Akkaba Metropolis where they were greeted with reverence by the inhabitants. This branch of the Clan had all been depowered by the actions of the Scarlet Witch which led to the Apocalypse Twins deciding that they were no longer Mutants and thus not able to survive the struggle of evolution. As a result, they decided to kill all the assembled Akkabans and destroyed the settlement. (Uncanny Avengers)

For centuries, Akkaba dreamt of the day of Mutant ascension on the planet and this came to pass following the Inversion when Genesis reclaimed the mantle of Apocalypse and with the aid of the X-Men began building a Gene Bomb intending to wipe out anyone that lacked the X-Gene. (Avengers & X-Men: AXIS v1 #6)

Genocide along with a faction of Clan Akkaba were working in secret during the M-Pox crisis where they had public communions that were overseen by the resurrected Angel. (Uncanny X-Men v4 #7) They had been removing the corrupted flesh from Warren Worthington in order to culture it into a whole host of Archangels that Genocide intended to use as his death-flight to bring about the apocalypse. (Uncanny X-Men v4 #9)

Dawn of X

Coven Akkaba later came to ally with Morgan le Fay thus bringing them into conflict with the X-Men following the establishment of the Mutant nation of Krakoa. (Excalibur v4 #2)

Overview

In appearance, the members of Clan Akkaba were a secret society that consisted of the descendants of Apocalypse. Thus, they were all Mutants and each had inherited some of his powers ranging from shapeshifting and projecting psychic fire from the mouth. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #2)

En Sabah Nur was said to be more than a god to them as he was their living ancestor. It was his blood that coursed through their veins that gave them powers beyond that of ordinary humans. Members of the clan used special tattoos that were part of a brand system where the larger the tattoo meant the person had the largest amount of En Sabah Bur's blood. The more blood held by the individual meant that they had a greater level of power which improved their status in Clan Akkaba. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #1) Apocalypse was said to not favour those that showed a grey-skin similar to himself with it remarked that this was because he saw in them something that he did not like in himself. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #2)

The inner circle of Clan Akkaba served as the leaders of the group who had the power to awaken En Sabah Nur. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #1) However, calling upon their ancestor required a sacrifice and he killed one of the inner council as punishment for being too weak to combat a threat without his aid. Their ranks were divided between the Fittest and the Lessers with the former being in positions of power. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #2) A splinter group consisting of human servants of the Clan formed where they learnt to be powerful magi and created Coven Akkaba. (Excalibur v4 #2)

Various tests and trials are to be undergone by a member who wishes to achieve this title, including battling any other member who questions the legitimacy of their position. (X-Men: Apocalypse vs. Dracula v1 #3)

One of their headquarters was the Akkaba Metropolis that was a large underground city situated underneath the North Pole. (Uncanny X-Force v1 #14)

Notes

  • Clan Akkba was created by Terry Kavanagh and Adam Pollina where they made their first appearance in Rise of Apocalypse v1 #1 (October, 1996).
  • In an interview with Frank Tieri, he commented on the groups creation, "So anyway, no offspring of any kind makes absolutely no sense and is not very realistic at all. And so, probably the most significant new addition to the Apocalypse mythos introduced here is the concept of Clan Akkaba. Clan Akkaba is a secret society who are descended from Apocalypse -- and because ol’ blue lips is such a powerful mutant-- unlike what is the case with most mutants-- most of his descendants have inherited his specific powers. Within the Clan, the amount of Apocalypse’s blood in your system determines your standing within the group—the more you have, the more of his power you have and hence the greater standing. The one with the greatest amount of blood is usually what is known as “The Fittest”—sort of like Apocalypse’s “pope”. Now, I say “usually” because the Fittest can be taken out anytime through combat from other ambitious Clan members-- and I say “pope” because the Clan worship Apocalypse as their living god. Now imagine what that would be like… “What would Jesus do?” would take on a whole new meaning because you know, you sort of could just go and ask him. Of course, “Jesus” in this case is a megalomaniacal mass murder, but you get the idea."
