Ren

Ren is the son of Primus and the savior of Mer, who must find the lost Thirteen Treasures of Rule in order to save the entire planet from being totally enveloped by the fiendish Dark Water. However, his quest was not always so grand and noble. Ren grew up as a lighthouse-keeper on the shores of the ruined Octopon, having been raised by Jenna and known absolutely nothing of his royal heritage.

All that changed one day when he rescued a seemingly insane old man from the pounding surf, only to have him die in his arms, but not before the old man - Primus - had revealed that they were father and son, and that in order to restore Octopon he would have to obtain the Thirteen Treasures of Rule, sending him to see the reptile-man Alomar, who was the keeper of the compass. From Alomar, Ren learned everything he needed to know about the treasures... or so he thought.

Ren's efforts to get the treasures did not go unhindered. The pirate king Bloth, who wanted the treasures for himself, and his vile crew continually made life difficult for Ren. Many times, the compass and various treasures fell into their hands, but Ren was always able to get them back with the help of his loyal friends and crew, former pirate Ioz, ecomancer Tula and monkey bird Niddler, who had once been a slave of Bloth. Their vessel of choice was the small but swift Wraith, which they had stolen from Joat.

His adventures took him to many exotic locales throughout Mer. From the pirate port of Janda Town, where Zoolie's gamehouse can be found, to the secluded island of Banjamaar where he fought Kiroptus after falling for his trick and freeing him from the Bell of the First Sound, the island of Pandawa where he freed the entire monkey bird race from the cruel slaver Jargis, he and his crew tangled with such fantastic adversaries as the gigantic Lugg Brothers, the seductive (and delusional) sorceress Cray, the evil wizard Garen, and the Dagron Master Onda.

But Ren's biggest challenge came when he discovered that the Thirteen Treasures of Rule would not only restore Octopon, but also all of Mer. Stepping in to take the place of his past enemies, who were of course all eventually beaten, was the master of the Dark Water itself, the monstrous Dark Dweller, and his minions, Morpho and the Dark Disciples. Realizing that much more was at stake than merely his homeland, Ren continued his quest even after restoring Octopon with the first seven Treasures of Rule.

Comics

Ren is 17 years old, and was raised by the kindly Ryka. Ren and his crew acquired the First Treasure of Rule from the deadly Dragon's Maw, but it was stolen thereafter by Bloth's crewmen (along with the compass), Konk and the Lugg Brothers, whilst Ren and his crew were on the Island of the Pale Warriors. It was on this isle that Ren briefly got into trouble with the Atani, when Ioz and Tula stole from them, but all was forgiven after Ren saved the life of their ruler, King Obric.

Thus began a desperate race to get the treasure and compass back from Konk and the Lugg Brothers, who they chased to Pandawa. There, Ren was torn between continuing to pursue Bloth's underlings and helping the rebel monkey birds in their campaign against the cruel slaver, Jargis. Ultimately, he chose to remain and help them while Ioz and Tula continued after Konk, and in return he was awarded the Second Treasure of Rule by the Monkey Bird Queen. After leaving Pandawa to catch up with Ioz and Tula, Ren and Niddler were captured and held prisoner aboard the Maelstrom.

In the Kravidorm, they met Avagon, an old friend of Primus'. She told Ren of his father's failed quest to gather the Thirteen Treasures of Rule 17 years ago, before helping him plan an escape from the Maelstrom. Although Ren gained access to the sewerways, he could not get past the Constrictus, and thus he sought the help of Avagon and her fellow prisoners to stage a revolt against Bloth. The plan worked, although it cost Avagon her life, and Ren was reunited with Ioz and Tula, who, with the help of Zoolie, had gotten the compass and treasure back from Konk in Janda Town.
