The Empire of Tears is an empire that features in DC Comics.

History

Origin

The Empire of Tears was a demonic empire that ruled the night eons ago in a time when magic held prominence in the cosmos. They deathless regents came to remain unchallenged until the Elders of Oa declared themselves to be the Guardians of the Universe. They commenced a purge of the starways in order to remove the dark and necromantic factions that dominated it. (Green Lantern Corps Annual v1 #2)

Among them included the Sorcerers of Jhesh'lesh that traded in the tallow of infants, the Yattering Tower of Phuul whose sibilant voices brought wisdom, ecstasy as well as madness and the Shamans of Ushmiel that cured ills with feathery caresses. All these and hundreds of others fell to the Guardians who then turned their attention to the malign Empire of Tears. (Green Lantern Corps Quarterly v1 #7)

The disembodied regents that ruled the Empire of Tears were not dead but made powerless where they were chained and entombed on Ysmault. (Green Lantern Corps Annual v1 #2)

For countless ears, the Empire of Tears had been purged from the starways by the Guardians with their Regents being entombed on the corpse world of Ysmault that had spawned them. (Green Lantern Corps v2 #11)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. The Empire of Tears was an interstellar empire that existed long ago in the universe. In Sector 666, demons ruled the Cancer Worlds in that region of space until the Guardians of the Universe banished them from their magick realms. Later on, the Massacre of Sector 666 occurred when an error caused the Guardian of the Universe's robotic Manhunters to purge all life in an entire space sector. Among the worlds destroyed was the planet Ryutt whose sole survivor was Atros who was approached by four demons. They came to offer him revenge against the Oans in exchange for joining him thus forming the Five Inversions that waged a war against the Guardians for centuries. Eventually, they came to form the Empire of Tears that were far-flung worlds connected to one another where the demons practiced their magic. In time, Atros came to learn the art of blood prophecy where he came to witness him killing his fellow Inversions. (Red Lanterns v1 #0)

After eons, the Five Inversions were defeated and came to be imprisoned on the corpse world of Ysmault. (Red Lanterns v1 #0) Around this time, a shuttle came to crash on Ysmault with a distress signal drawing the Green Lantern Abin Sur to it to rescue any survivors. He came to find only a young girl named Ocula who he saved and took back with him to Ungara. Unknown to him, the mind of the girl had been infected by the demons of Ysmault where he came to establish a Shadow Empire in secret. It would make use of magic and demons where she would later move across space where she kept its existence a closely guarded secret. Meanwhile, the experience on Ysmault had deeply affected Abin Sur's own mind which would ultimately lead to his death. (Green Lantern Corps v3 #39)

Later on, Atrocitus broke free from his shackles and decided to enact the prophecy by killing the other Inversions. He then used their blood to forge the first red Power Battery from which he used to create the Red Lantern Corps. (Red Lanterns v1 #0)

Overview

In appearance, the Empire of Tears was an interstellar empire ruled by demons and wielded magic where they dominated three galaxies. Its regents were deathless and malign essences whose cruelties had grown too sophisticated for mortal form. (Green Lantern Corps Annual v1 #2) The cruel and perverse entities came to delight in the torment of any invaders with their own malevolence was said to be limitless (Green Lantern Corps Quarterly v1 #7)

The Cancer Worlds located in Sector 666 was once the domain of some of the demons of the Empire of Tears. (Red Lanterns v1 #0)
