Jean Grey is a female comic superhero who features in Marvel Comics.

Biography

Origin

Jean Grey was the red-haired daughter of John Grey and his wife Elaine Grey where she had an older sister named Sara Grey. (X-Men v1 #136)

In her childhood, one of her best friends was Annie Richardson with the two regularly playing together. When Jean was 10 years old, she was playing with a frisbee with Annie. During the game, the frisbee went out on the road with her friend looking to get it but did not see a speeding car. Annie Richardson was fatally injured from being hit by the vehicle with Jean by her side in that moment. It was then that her latent telepathic abilities first manifested where she went into her best friend's mind at the moment of her death with the traumatic event scarring her mentally. Jean had felt as if a part of her died during that encounter where she came to be a more withdrawn, serious and almost haunted child. Her parents began to worry for their daughter and started to take her to psychiatrists though she began more withdrawn from people by the time she was 11 years old. Unknown to anyone, the reason for her self-imposed isolation was because she started to hear the thoughts of everyone around her and was unable to block the thoughts from entering her mind with these overwhelming her to the point that she could possibly die from her newly activated abilities. Marvel Girl

This school served as a cover for the X-Men, a team of young mutants being trained by Professor Xavier in order to fight for a dream of peaceful racial coexistence. The team acted in the shadows combating threats posed by evil mutants who used their powers against humanity. Jean Grey completed the group with four more students, Cyclops – Scott Summers' mutant alias –, Iceman, Angel, and Beast. Grey took on the codename Marvel Girl. (X-Men v1 #1)

Satisfied with Jean's added maturity and her years of practice, Xavier released the psychic barriers preventing Jean from using her telepathic abilities. When Professor Xavier discovered that in order to thwart an invasion of Earth by the alien Z'nox he had to seclude himself for an extended period of time in order to make preparations, he had the mutant shapeshifter called the Changeling take his place leading the X-Men, and only Jean was allowed to know the truth. Xavier ordered Jean to keep his secret safe, even after the Changeling was killed in battle, leading the other X-Men to believe their mentor had died. (X-Men v1 #41)

Phoenix

Alongside Scott, she went to see her parents where she revealed herself to be a Mutant and her transformation into the Phoenix. (X-Men v1 #109) Two years ago, her sister came to also learn about her mutation and was worried about whether her own children were Mutants. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

X-Factor

Jean was greatly disturbed to learn of the current wave of anti-mutant sentiment that had risen in her absence. She was also stunned that the X-Men were working alongside Magneto, the original X-Men's greatest foe. Jean decided that the original X-Men should do something as she believed the X-Men had strayed from Professor Xavier's dream. The five original friends founded a new organization to help other superhuman mutants. X-Factor intended to seek out and aid other mutants under the pretense of hunting them down as menaces to society. The public assumed they were humans hunting mutants, when in fact, they were training young mutants in the use of their powers at the X-Factor Complex. (X-Factor v1 #1)

Unsure what to do about Maddie and the baby and Jean, Scott only felt useful when commanding his team. Scott attempted to contact Maddie, but the number was disconnected. At first, Scott tried to keep his marriage and son from Jean. Meanwhile, Jean was plagued with dreams of herself becoming the Phoenix. She also sensed that Scott was being distant about something. She assumed he had fallen for Phoenix while she was asleep in the cocoon. Finally, the truth came out. Jean noticed that Madelyne looked exactly liked her. (X-Factor v1 #7)

Jean learned that her older sister Sara Bailey had begun speaking on behalf of mutants in her absence. Jean and Scott went to check on her, fearing for her safety. Upon arriving, the house exploded. It was later learned that Sara had been murdered by mutant-hating fanatics, likely acting on orders from Cameron Hodge, X-Factor's public relations manager. (X-Factor v1 #12)

Feeling bad about abandoning his family, Jean suggested that Scott goes home to check on them. Scott went back to Alaska to look for them. Scott and Jean were both still unaware of Sinister's influence on their lives. Sinister sent the Marauders to kill Madelyne Pryor and collect Nathan Christopher for him. She was shot multiple times and fell into a coma. She was taken to the hospital as a Jane Doe. Sinister erased every record of Madelyne and the baby. After finding the corpse of a young redhead in a river, Scott believed his wife was dead and buried her by himself. (X-Factor v1 #15)

Gold

Jean was confronted by Onslaught on the Astral Plane, who claimed he could give her the power of the Phoenix Force once again if she joined him. After she initially refused, Onslaught showed her Prof. Xavier's hidden memories, where Jean was shocked to learn her father figure and mentor had once believed he was in love with her. However, Jean still refused Onslaught. He left Jean with an image of his name upon her brow. (X-Men v2 #53)

New X-Men

Following the outing of Professor X as a mutant to the world, while secretly under the influence of Cassandra Nova, his school opened its doors to the mutant population at large. Xavier/Nova left Earth and Jean was left as headmistress of the school. (New X-Men v1 #117)

Resurrection

She was resurrected by the Phoenix who created a pocket of reality that resembled Jean Grey's home town and people from her life with her being a waitress at a diner. Jean was subsumed in this reality and unaware of events around her as she came to believe herself to be a normal person. This was until Old Man Logan went in and killed one of her friends in the diner which was actually a manifestation of the Phoenix that was masquerading as a human. Upon regaining her memory, she confronted the Phoenix Force and rejected the power it was giving her. This led to Jean convincing it that her and its path were not the same with the cosmic entity reluctantly agreeing with her decision. Thus, it departed Earth and gave Jean Grey a new lease of life on Earth with her being among the X-Men once again. (Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey v1 #5)

She then decided to work with a team of X-Men in order to help young Mutants from persecution. This team consisted of Namor, Gentle, Nightcrawler, Trinary, Honey Badger and the new Wolverine who operated from their underwater headquarters of Searebro. (X-Men: Red v1 #1)

House of X

Marvel Girl on Krakoa in X-Men v5 #1.

After the establishment of the nation of Krakoa, she was one of many Mutants that came to reside on the living island that was the home of their people.

She was among the Omega-level Mutants that participated in the endeavour of terraforming Mars that was turned into planet Arakko. (Planet-Size X-Men v1 #1)

She joined the new X-Men team which came to reside from their headquarters called the Treehouse which was situated in New York City. Their first mission involved combating an extraterrestrial mech that had crashed into the city and attempted to kill everyone. The X-Men at first struggled in defeating their foe but then formed their own mecha that defeated it with their efforts leading to them being hailed as heroes. (X-Men v6 #1)

When she was 10 years old, she was noted to had been a brighter than average tomboy. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

The death of her best friend Annie Richardson was a notable traumatic event for her in her youth. This was not only because she died in Jean's arms but also because her abilities first activated with her being in Annie's mind at the moment of her death. Thus, when her friend died, Jean came to feel that a piece of herself became lost as well with this scarring her for many years. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

A house rule maintained by her was that she did not mindscan the people she loved. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

Not only were she and Sara sisters but they were also best friends. The two would talk about anything with the sibling trusting each other and looking out for one another. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

Powers and abilities

As a Mutant, she had a number of extraordinary powers beyond those of normal humans. This included telekinesis that gave her the ability to move objects through the power of her thoughts alone. (X-Men v1 #1) It was her incredible telepathy that marked her as being an Omega-level Mutant. (House of X v1 #1)

A problem with being a telepath was that they habitually reacted to what people thought rather than what they said. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)

She was able to mask her presence from being detected by other telepaths or devices like Cerebro. Jean was shown to be able to extend this defense to others around her as well. However, this telepathic cloaking was not perfect and powerful psychics were able to notice her or see through this ability. (X-Men v4 #5)

Her telekinetic talent automatically adjusted her body's metabolic levels thus making her impervious to temperature shifts. (Bizarre Adventures v1 #27)
