- Lord of the Rings: c. 4061 BC (III 3001). Bilbo Baggins leaves the Shire, leaving his ring behind. Gandalf begins to believe Bilbo's ring is the One Ring, and the Rangers double their number of guards on the Shire. Gandalf asks Aragorn to help him track Gollum. (The Return of the King)

- Lord of the Rings: c. 4045 BC (III 3017). Gollum is freed by Sauron, and leaves Mordor, only to be captured by Aragorn and taken to Thranduil. Meanwhile, Gandalf reads the scroll of Isildur, confirming that Frodo Baggins has inherited the One Ring. (The Return of the King)
- Lord of the Rings: c. 4044 BC (III 3018). Gollum escapes. The Fellowship of the Ring leaves Rivendell- their mission is to take the One Ring to Mount Doom where it can be destroyed. (The Fellowship of the Ring; The Return of the King)
- Lord of the Rings: c. 4043 BC (III 3019). The Fellowship of the Ring breaks apart. The War of the Ring, the defeat of Sauron, the destruction of the One Ring and the fall of Barad-dur.
