History
The Black Order (Japanese: 黒の教団, Hepburn: Kuro no Kyōdan?) was an organization formed with the express purpose of destroying Akuma and defeating the Millennium Earl. Their origins were traced to over a century ago when a select number of humans encountered a cube made of the substance known as Innocence. The artifact contained the last words of a previous civilization who had used Innocence to vanquish the Millennium Earl and the clan of Noah. This act destroyed their civilization but their final act was to warn subsequent generations of the Earl's return and that his actions would destroy the world. Armed with this knowledge, the Black Order was created with the purpose of waging war against this threat. The relic told the humans to gather accommodators in the fight against the Millennium Earl where they were to use the Innocence to destroy their foe. In response, the Earl was said to had developed the Akuma with the goal of thwarting the Black Order. At some point, the Bookman Clan came to be allies of the Black Order but this was simply due to their need to record historical events.
Around 9 years ago, the Black Order came to be concerned about their ability to gain Accommodators to become Apostles. Thus, a secret research program was launched Asia branch by the Chang clan and the Epstain family. This involved harvesting the bodies of badly injured exorcists whose brains were removed and placed in younger artificial bodies. This became the basis of the Second Exorcist Program with the subjects not aware that they were new incarnations of old exorcists. It was believed that using slain apostles meant that they could easily synchronise with their Innocence. One of the first to be reborn in this manner was a female exorcist whose soul was put into a maleform who came to be known as Alma Karma. Another Second Exorcist was Yu Kanda with the two going through numerous experiments to synchronise them with their Innocence. The relationship between the two test subjects was tumultuous which stemmed from their relationship in their former lives though neither Kanda nor Karma were fully aware of this fact. Around this time, old memories began to re-surface in Kanda's mind and upon learning this the researchers decided to terminate him. Karna though came to save Yu though at the cost of being captured where he came to synchronise with his Innocence. He came to uncover his past body causing him to be driven insane where he started massacring the research team at the Asia branch. Karma was only stopped by Yu Kanda who managed to synchronise with his Innocence and grievously wounded the Second Exorcist. As a result of the incident, the project was shut down and the comatose Karma's body was secretly hidden in the North American branch.
Their intelligence later determined that large numbers of Akuma were being created and moving across the world. As such, the Order dispatched exorcists to investigate these activities as well as eliminate Akuma.
During this assault, 148 members of the Order were killed with six of them being Exorcists.
In search for the Heart of Innocence, the Clan of Noah began to hunt down Generals within the Black Order as the Millennium Earl believed it had manifested as one of their weapons.
Following the attack on the Europe Branch headquarters, the Black Order secretly restarted their old research program in creating artificial apostles. However, this time, they decided rather than create individuals that could bond with Innocence they instead made subjects that were part Akuma using cells from the comatose Alma Karma. This resulted in the Third Exorcist Program with these hybrid exorcists being used to help increase the Black Orders numbers.
Overview
In appearance, the Black Order was an organization whose existence was not fully known to the world though its members worked to defend it. It was the duty of an exorcist to protect humans from Akuma. the official and universally recognized emblem of the Black Order was the Rose Cross (ローズクロス, Rōzu Kurosu).
One of the founding families of the Order was the Chang Clan. They were known to had worked with the Epstain family on research matters. At some point, the Bookman Clan came to ally with the Order where they continued their duty of recording and maintaining the true secret history of the world.
The order was headed by the Great Generals (大元帥, Daigensui) that were five shadowed figures whose faces were never seen. Among the strongest of their number were a number of generals that led their military forces into battle. The actions of the Black Order was overseen by Central that was a sub-section of the Vatican situated in Rome, Italy. It had the specific role of controlling the organisation and gaining further assistance from other higher sources. Beyond Central, there were different branches were overseen by branch heads where each served as the official head liaison between Central and the rest of the Black Order. They also operated as a chief officer (室長, shitsuchou) that meant all the other regional branch chiefs respond to them. Branch chief's were assisted by a Branch Chief assistant with each branch holding seven different sections that were each overseen by a section chief who had their own duties.
A voluntary force attached to the Black Order were the Finders that traversed the world in order to study abnormal phenomena and determining the location of shards of Innocence. They were the only force within the organization that could not make use of Innocence. When information determined the presence of Innocence, the Finders were dispatched from headquarters to verify the existence of the shard. After determining the exact cause of the anomalies, they made their findings back to headquarters with even the smallest trace of Innocence leading to the Exorcists being summoned. Due to their status, they were unable to combat Akuma and instead relied on Exorcists for backup. They were sometimes treated with scorn by Exorcists who believed Finders to be nothing more than grunts and cannon fodder.
It was forbidden for the status of members to be shared with outsiders including whether they were alive or dead. This meant that if one of their number was killed then this fact was not shared with the deceased family nor were the bodies returned to them. A reason for this was that there was no guarantee that the dead's family, friends and loved ones did not succumb to their desire to see the deceased thus turning them into Akuma. By denying the family knowledge of the deceased than it was believed that they dead could not be resurrected by the Millennium Earl. As such, the bodies of the dead were cremated and buried in the grounds of the Order. The Black Order maintained a chapel to contain large numbers of coffins that were burnt in a mass cremation. Once recruited, an Exorcist could not leave the ranks of the Order.
Exorcist uniforms had buttons that were made up of silver that were quite valuable. A typical tool was the use of messenger Golems that were small winged constructs which had multiple roles but could be used to deliver messages. In appearance, these constructs were spherical at their core with a pair of wings behind them for flight. One feature of all golems was the ability to track their creator.
The Order also crafted a range of technological gadgets for use against the enemy. This included large machines that could be used to generate a barrier against Akuma attacks or reverse the field to trap low level Akuma in a shield.
Innocence was an important tool for use by the Black Order with it being refined into anti-Akuma weapons. It as incredibly valuable to the organization with efforts being made to recover it if the exorcist was killed.
It was known that they had conducted a number of experiments on Innocence in order to weaponise it. Some of these experiments were noted to be unethical and used human experimentation. In addition, they looked to create new apostles through artificial means in order to bolster their numbers. This included the Second Exorcist Program that looked to take the bodies of grievously wounded apostles and harvest their brains that were placed in younger artificial bodies. These bodies were enhanced compared to normal humans as they were able to heal from any injury. This was because it was believed these second exorcists could connect to their former Innocence more easily thus ensuring a new apostle. Despite this, there were many complications with regards to the experiments and the Black Order kept the true origins of the second exorcists from the subjects. Years later, the Third Exorcist Program was formed using Alma Karma's body where the cells were infused with the Akuma Egg pieces. This created huamn/Akuma hybrids who were able to use dark matter to consume their targets. These artificial exorcists had a minor healing factor that could close wounds but if incapable of functioning then they were devoured so that their cells could be used to birth further generations of Third Exorcists. An issue with the Third Exorcists was that they were vulnerable to the influence of their forebear namely Alma Karma whose cells could take control over them and make them go berserk.
