Biography

The Skrull Khn'nr in Captain Marvel v6 #4.

Khn'nr was a male member of the Skrull race who followed the faction of Queen Veranke that desired to turn Earth into their new homeworld. He volunteered to be part of the infiltration forces where he was to be encoded with he memory and personality of Captain Marvel who was the Kree warrior Mar-Vell. Thus, he went through a deeply seated encoding program but an error in the process led to him genuinely believing that he was the real Mar-Vell who managed to survive his cancer. He broke free and travelled to Earth with the Skrulls attempting to recapture him. (Captain Marvel v6 #5)

He came to believe that he had survived the cancer that had thought to had killed Mar-Vell. Emerging into a world in the midst of the Civil War, he came into a conflict between Earth’s various superheroes. He quickly encountered S.H.I.E.L.D. forces who sought to recruit or contain him, and he reacted with confusion at their references to the hero registration crisis. During the course of the issue, Khn’nr displayed his formidable combat training, evading capture and demonstrating his powers while trying to understand his place in this altered political and moral landscape. (Captain Marvel v6 #1) He made contact with the pro-registration side of the Civil War divide, meeting Iron Man to discuss his possible role in ending the conflict. During their interaction, Khn’nr expressed uncertainty over the morality of the war and suspicion toward the motives of those seeking to enlist his aid. Later, while still operating as Captain Marvel, he acted to protect civilians from a violent attack, his instinctive heroism overriding the clandestine mission embedded deep within his subconscious. (Captain Marvel v6 #2)

He managed to overpower the Thunderbolts until Songbird attempted to talk to him about knowing his son Genis-Vell with this confusing Captain Marvel. After being attacked by Bullseye, he continued his attack until he was approached by Norman Osborn who wanted to talk to the hero about his seeming identity crisis. (Thunderbolts v1 #122)

Though he defeated his attackers, he was badly wounded when he was approached by the Kree Noh-Varr who held onto his dying body. As Captain Marvel, he urged Noh-Varr to continue the legacy and to protect the Earth from the invading Skrulls before he reverted to his true form after which he died. (Secret Invasion v1 #6)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, he was a male humanoid who resembled the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, with the same tall, muscular physique and pink Kree skin tone. His hair was short and blond, and his facial features were identical to the classic depiction of Mar-Vell, including the strong jawline and straight, narrow nose. He wore the modernized red and blue Captain Marvel uniform of that period, with a dark blue bodysuit accented by a red chest, shoulders, and gloves. The gold eight-pointed star emblem was displayed prominently in the center of his chest, and a matching gold trim separated the red and blue segments of the costume. He also wore red boots and a gold sash belt tied at his waist. (Captain Marvel v6 #1)

He had the personality profile of Mar-Vell overlayed over his own persona but an error in the process made him genuinely believing that he was Captain Marvel. Upon learning the truth of his origins, he still considered himself Captain Marvel in soul and dedicated to his ideals of protecting Earth. He did not care of his biological origins as he came to consider himself the sworn protector of the planet and its people which he did so no matter the cost. (Captain Marvel v6 #5)

As Mar-Vell, he displayed traits of loyalty, determination, and a deep sense of honor—values drawn from the false Kree identity that had been imposed upon him. He appeared calm, measured, and willing to protect innocents, often prioritizing the safety of others over his own well-being. Despite being a sleeper agent, he demonstrated a restrained, diplomatic manner in tense interactions, suggesting a preference for resolution over aggression. These qualities were genuine in his behavior as he believed himself to be a noble hero. (Captain Marvel v6 #1)

Powers and abilities

Originally a Skrull, he had the D.N.A. of Captain Marvel applied to his body. Khn’nr was a member of the Skrull race, an extraterrestrial species whose physiology granted him innate shapeshifting abilities, allowing him to alter his form, size, and features at will. Even in his surgically fixed Kree disguise, his biology afforded him physical advantages beyond human limits, including enhanced strength, durability, and stamina. Skrull physiology also allowed for a greater resilience to injury and a capacity to endure hostile environments that would be dangerous to humans. However, in his altered state as a permanent Mar-Vell duplicate, much of his natural shapeshifting was suppressed, though his baseline Skrull endurance and toughness remained. The extent of the Skrull programming was said to be so process that they even managed to replicate Mar-Vell's cancer and the energy signature of his Nega-Bands. (Captain Marvel v6 #5)

Similar to Mar-Vell, he was said to operate as a kind of energy sponge where he could absorb and manipulate radiation. (Thunderbolts v1 #122)
