Kid Eternity in Hit comics v1 #25.

Kit Freeman

The young boy found himself on a merchant ship by 1942 where he was taken in by the captain who he called his 'grandpa'. Together, they set sail carrying crude oil during World War II when the kid sighted a Nazi submarine. The captain responded to firing a cannon at the seemingly hostile ship but the shot missed and the submarine retaliated by firing its torpedoes. They struck the ship and ignited the oil stored on-board with the captain grievously wounded and dying in the kid's arms. The crew attempted to evacuate and take the boy to safety but they all perished as the ship was sunk. The deceased boy and his grandfather then found a spiral stairway that led up into the clouds. The two climbed up it where they found themselves at the gates of the afterlife. When asked his name, the boy replied he did not have on and had always been called Kid where the attendant was not sure what to do as the boy's name was on his list of people who had died. Thus, he had to call Mr. Keeper who was responsible for the error as the kid was not destined to die for another 75 years. To compensate for this mistake, they gave the boy the ability to summon any historical or mythological figure to aid him by saying the word 'Eternity' where he was set to stop all future evils with this power. He was then ushered back into the mortal world to begin his mission. (Hit Comics v1 #25)

Returning to Earth, his first mission was to investigate mysterious disappearances on a snowy mountain. Looking into the matter, he learnt that the threat was from the mad Doctor Pain who wanted to create life using body parts from others. Building a laboratory underneath a graveyard, he used the dead to make a body but after running out of material decided to harvest the living to complete his experiment. His activities were hidden behind a mysterious door where he orchestrated traps to trap and kill people passing by the location. Kid Eternity came to find his lab where he managed to free the prisoners and used his power to turn into Blackhawk who ended the threat of Doctor Pain who was killed in their struggle. (Hit Comics v1 #26)

Whilst in his spirit form, he and Mr. Keeper were in the clouds when they came upon a distraught Father Time. He was frustrated as his time machine that managed history had broken down and was in need of repair. The result of this was scrambling time and bringing people to different periods of history. This saw a fleet of Roman ships led by Julius Caesar himself being displaced to he present where they invaded New York City. To fight the invaders, Kid Eternity turned into Vercingetorix the mighty Gaul who had fought against Caesar's forces. However, they outnumbered him and forced Kid Eternity to retreat where he learnt that Father time needed more time to repair his machine. By this point, the Roman army had taken over New York and formed a gladiatorial arena to entertain Caesar himself. To save the people, Kid Eternity intervened where he took on the identity of various figures that fought in the matches to distract the Romans. This included taking on the forms of Hercules, Jim Jeferies and Zybisco where he entertained the Romans long enough until Father Time repaired his machine thus restoring the timeline and sending Caesar along with his forces back to their place in history. (Hit Comics v1 #30)

The next threat to fall to the city was when a criminal called Mr. Silence struck where he created a machine that nullified sound. This allowed him to perpetrate a crime wave and hold the city at ransom as there was no sound to hear with people unable to communicate with one another. Kid Eternity and Mr. Keeper themselves were affected with the former unable to use his magic word as a result of no sound forming. This prevented him from using his powers and he was unable to stop Mr. Silence until he along with Mr. Keeper followed the criminals to their base. They found the machine producing the silence did not work at a certain altitude allowing for Kid Eternity to summon Daniel Boone to fight the villain and his henchmen. After defeating the villain, he was captured for the authorities to arrest whilst Kid Eternity shut down Mr. Silence's machine thus ending the danger. (Hit Comics v1 #37)

One day, the kid was looking for Mr. Keeper who he had not seen and in his ghost form found his compatriot in the clouds talking to the Bookkeeper. This spirit was responsible for keeping tracking of all the souls within eternity and found twenty figures missing from the count. Looking to help, Kid Eternity travelled to Earth in order to find these missing individuals. (Hit Comics v1 #41)

Afterwards, the messenger of the gods Hermes contacted Mr. Keeper and Kid Eternity to enlist their aid in helping Captain Marvel to stop Doctor Sivana who was using a reincarnation machine to bring back villainous figures from he 18th century. (Shazam! v1 #27)

DC

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different version of events.

He was an orphan who lived during World War II where he began working for the captain of a merchant ship who he called Grandpa. It was in 1942 when their ship encountered a U-Boat which sunk them. The boy briefly survived the torpedo strike but his legs were damaged and he died shortly afterwards as he was gunned down by the submarine's crew. He then seemingly emerged in Heaven where a clerical error led to him being given magical superpowers and he was aided by a mystical being called Mr. Keeper. The pair worked together to erect Chaospheres around the world and would help people on occasion until they were caught and sent to Hell. The kid believed then that it took him 30 years to get out. (Kid Eternity v2 #1)

He was one of a number of people tied to the Lords of Order and Chaos that were being hunted down by Mordru. The sorcerer came to corner and seemingly kill Kid Eternity in order to prevent this agent of chaos from interfering with his plans. (JSA v1 #1)

Though killed, his spirit ended up in Hell where he remained trapped there and began to look for Mr. Keeper. He later was captured Brother Blood who chained him to a door to the afterlife where he used his power to steal Kid Eternity's abilities for his own use. This allowed him to bring back the dead without their souls which he used for his own plot. During this time, his activities drew the attention of the Teen Titans where Brother Blood's stolen power allowed him to summon dead powered beings against his foes. This was until Beast Boy and Raven freed Kid Eternity who used his power to remove the dead from the world of the living. Kid Eternity then used his power to get his revenge on Brother Blood by summoning the prior bearers of the name who proceeded with killing the current holder of the title. With him dead, his soul also came to fall into Kid Eterntiy's service where he departed to find Mr. Keeper after parting ways with the Teen Titans. (Teen Titans v3 #31)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Kid Eternity had said that he was not like the Teen Titans in that he was not a good guy or bad guy. Instead, he simply wanted to be left alone. (Teen Titans v3 #31)

He was assisted by a being known as Mr. Keeper who worked in the afterlife in compiling names of people destined to die at set moments. It was said that he had performed two million years of perfect service where he had not made a mistake in that time. He quit his job as a keeper and instead stayed by Kid Eternity's side to help him on his adventures. (Hit Comics v1 #25) He served as an invisible companion who aided he kid on his missions. (Hit Comics v1 #26)

Powers and abilities

After dying, he found himself in the afterlife where a clerical error had resulted in him dying before his intended time. To compensate for this, he was given mystical powers that were tied to a magic word that was 'Eternity'. This allowed him to travel through the Corridor of Time and approach the Beacon of Eternity that was the Doorway of Time itself. Past the Gates of Eternity, he was able to travel into the Lands of Eternity where the greatest deeds and history as well as mythology were recorded. With this power, he could summon any figure from history where they were to aid him in any task. (Hit Comics v1 #25) When using this power, he could also turn into the historical and mythological figure that he summoned to aid him. (Hit Comics v1 #26)

According to one account, the Kid was endowed with power from the Lords of Chaos who gave the child the power to travel in space and in the Subtle Realms. In addition, he could summon demon allies that could take on any form. (Kid Eternity v2 #3)

A further aspect of his powers was that he could make himself into a ghost-like being or switch back into a mortal human form. (Hit Comics v1 #25)
