Mordru is a male comic supervillain that features in DC Comics.

Biography

Origin

Mordru was said to had once been Wrynn who was son of Lord Topaz of Gemworld. In a quest for power, he accidently summoned the golem called Child who transformed Wrynn into a powerful agent of the Lords of Chaos who was renamed as Mordru. (Amethyst v3 #1) However, another account said that Mordru had no origins as he existed before the universe was created and was destined to live after it had ended. (JSA v1 #42)

It was said that it was Mordru who weakened the psyche of Hank Hall in order to allow him to possess him. After taking over his body, he drove the hero insane and led to him becoming the supervillain Extant and made him to terrible things to Dawn Granger. Afterwards, Dawn became pregnant and Mordru weaved a spell to spell to hide her from anyone with the intention of possessing her unborn child. Despite his plans, Fate intervened and allowed the soul of Hector Hall to be born from her instead. Afterwards, Hank Hall resisted and managed to break free from the Lord of Chaos's control but by this point he had fallen too far with the world considering him a supervillain. (JSA v1 #46)

Within the amulet, he remained trapped within a tomb constructed to hold him in the pocket universe. Doctor Fate along with several other members of the Justice Society entered into the amulet’s realm in order to escape an attack from Extant. By this point, Extant had attained control over time and was in the process of creating a new universe under his control. Fate and the others planned a means of combating him but struggled with ambushing him because of the villains omniscience. Hector Hall then decided that they consult the captive Mordru for advice as the sorcerer as a Lord of Chaos could discern weaknesses in Extant who also thrived on chaos energy. Upon arriving at his prison tomb, Mordru offered his advice and stated that he would collect a price in the future for his aid. (JSA v1 #14)

Through his machinations, he was able to trick Hector Hall into getting his body possessed by Mordru who unleashed his power against the Justice Society where he overwhelmed the heroes. (JSA v1 #46)

He was then confronted by the reborn Doctor Fate with Hector Hall having come to terms with the loss of his wife and balancing the magicks of order and chaos. Despite Mordru's unleashing his might, he was unable to defeat Hall who showed him his fate namely that he would fail in his goal of remaking the cosmos and be trapped fighting heroes only to be defeat each time. Such was to be his future even in the 30th century where he would battle a legion of heroes that lived in that era. Defeated, Mordru was then chained and imprisoned within the Rock of Eternity that was to leech his power for a millennia until his destined freedom in the far future. (JSA v1 #51)

Post-Flashpoint

Lord of Chaos in Justice League Dark v2 #12.

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. He was among the first wielders of magic which they learnt from Hecate where the Lords of Order tasked him as jailer to the mother of magic. Every night, he was noted to had tortured her and this led to him going onto the path of being a Lord of Chaos. (Justice League Dark v2 #11)

In the years after the Fall of Camelot, Mordru came to inhabit the lands where he was the lover and partner of the Questing Queen whose Horde sought to conquer the lands. (Demon Knights v1 #1)

Years ago, Zatara was noted to had sought him out with Mordru flaying the man but keeping him alive where he became amused at his seeming death wish and thus allowed him to live. (Justice League Dark v2 #11)

To fight the Otherkind, Zatara sent Sargon's Ruby of Life to Mordru where he imbued it with chaos magic and gave it to Wonder Woman and Zatanna for use in the fight. He, however, expressed no desire to aid them and simply departed where he warned them never to seek him out again otherwise he would kill them. (Justice League Dark v2 #11)

Overview

Personality and attributes

One of his goals was destroying all of creation and remaking it in his own image. (JSA v1 #51)

Mordru's greatest fear was being bound and imprisoned due to being a creature of chaos he enjoyed his freedom. Even being within a mortal vessel was distasteful to him but he did so in order to act in the world. However, the greatest fear was being trapped such as was the case when he was entombed within the Rock of Eternity where he was destined to be remain for a millennia. (JSA v1 #51)

Powers and abilities

According to Mordru, mortality was a concept that did not exist to him. Hourman stated that his timeline had no beginning or end which meant he never born but always existed and would never die. Injuries to his form could easily be repaired with him able to manufacture new limbs from the chthonic forces that he channelled. (JSA v1 #3) Mordru’s power was said to derive from chaos energy. (JSA v1 #14) Thus, he did not exist as a corporeal entity and like the Lords of Order he was sentient energy without shape or mass. However, as a magical being, he required a heart and soul in order to operate in the physical plane. (JSA v1 #42)

Mordru had a wide range of spells at his disposal such as ones that allowed him to teleport his enemies or grow himself to gigantic proportions. He had such fine control over his powers that he could use the most fragile of spells to create a vibratory resonance in a person's inner ear to cause them to lose concentration. (JSA v1 #3) According to him, the chaos magic he wielded was different from the ornate spells of order that used commands or pentragrams to control magic. Instead, his magic was wild as he did not ask the universe for anything but simply took what he wanted and shaped what he had desired. (Justice League Dark v2 #11)

  • Mordru was created by Jim Shooter and Curt Swan where he made his first appearance in Adventure Comics v1 #369 (June, 1968).

In other media

Television

Mordru in Legion of Super-Heroes.
  • In Legion of Superheroes, a character named Mordru was briefly shown in the episode "Child's Play" where he sat on the magical council of Zarox and was voiced by actor Richard McGonagle. The actual Mordru was shown in the episode "Trials" where he was voiced by actor Jim Ward. This Mordru was shown as being a powerful sorcerer from Sorcerer's World who was banished for evil. Rather than conduct the trials to restore his magic, he conducted a quest to find the Lamentation Pentacle. With its power, he defeated the magical council but they sent the depowered Zyxx to the Legion of Super-Heroes to recruit their aid. Their help allowed Zyxx to get his magical powers once more and he assisted in the defeat of Mordu.
