Leeloo
Leeloo Minai Lekarariba-Laminai-Tchai Ekbat De Sebat, or simply "Leeloo" for short, is the fabled Fifth Element of the Mondoshawans. A genetically engineered being created by the aliens to protect life from the ultimate evil, the Dark Planet, she did not resemble a Mondoshawan, but, in an apparent concession to their human subjects' ideals of beauty, the wise aliens made the Fifth Element a beautiful human female.
Leeloo was initially kept in an opaque sarcophagus shaped like a human being with its head leaned back, mouth open wide, in a temple somewhere in Egypt on Earth, dedicated to the five elements. The onset of World War I prompted the Mondoshawans to come and retrieve the elements in 1914, feeling they were no longer safe on Earth. Their human contact on Earth was promised that when the Dark Planet returned, so would they, and the five elements.
Millenia later in 2263, the Dark Planet returned. Keeping their promise, the Mondoshawans attempted to fly to Earth. Leeloo was aboard, wearing Mondoshawan armor. They never made it to Earth. Mangalores led by Aknot attacked the Mondoshawan ship, and they crashed into the moon. Leeloo was the sole survivor, but almost all of her body had been destroyed, leaving only a severed hand encased in a gauntlet. The hand was rushed to the Manhattan Nucleological Center after being recovered from the moon, where Professor Mactilburgh used the Center's advanced technology to rebuild Leeloo's body cell by cell. The scientists were surprised to find a seeming human being instead of a Mondoshawan.
Leeloo, who only spoke the "divine language," couldn't come to an understanding with the humans, so she broke out and stole General Munro's multipass, using it to escape. The NYPD, not understanding her significance, pursued her. She dove off the side of the skyscraper and landed in the passing cab of Korben Dallas, who, amazed at her survival after such a fall, became smitten with her. When the police attempted to take her into custody, Leeloo, reading some English she saw written, pleaded, "Please help!", prompting the softhearted Korben to assist her in fleeing the authorities and eventually finding her way to the home of Vito Cornelius.
Here, after resting, Leeloo explained to Cornelius (who understood the divine language) and his apprentice David that the other four elements had not been aboard the Mondoshawan ship, but were in the possession of the Diva Plavalaguna, a longtime friend of the Mondoshawans who would be performing at the Gemini Croquette concert at Fhloston Paradise, and she was to go and retrieve them. After some misunderstandings, shenanigans and despite the sinister Mr. Zorg and the vengeful Mangalores trying to stop them, Leeloo and Korben went to Fhloston when Korben "won" the Gemini Croquette contest, as part of President Lindberg's bid to secretly obtain the stones without the Mangalores (or the Dark Planet) knowing, under the pretense of attending the Diva's concert. During the trip, Leeloo studied and learned English, in particular developing a fascination with the concept of multipasses.
While Korben attended with Ruby Rhod, Leeloo met with the Diva's assistant, who told her she'd be given the stones after the concert. However, the Mangalores, led by Aknot's second in command Akanit, attacked, killing the Diva's attendants. Recognizing them as the ones who'd destroyed the Mondoshawan ship, an enraged Leeloo fought them, defeating Akanit and all of his men using superior fighting skills they were unprepared for. Suddenly however, Zorg, an agent of the Dark Planet, appeared, thinking the stones were in a case the Diva had in her suite. She shot and seriously injured Leeloo with his ZF1 gun, took the case and fled. He didn't know the case was empty and the five elements were inside of the Diva herself.
Zorg rigged the ship to blow up, whilst Korben and Fhloston security fended off the rest of the Mangalores. Finding an injured Leeloo, Korben took her and the stones and along with Father Cornelius and Ruby Rhod took Zorg's ship (he had returned after opening the case and finding it empty) and escaped before Fhloston Paradise exploded (due to Akanit, though, not Zorg). En route back to Earth, Leeloo recovered from her gunshot wound, but, researching human history, learned about the concept of war and humanity's bloody history. Realizing she was built to be a weapon, she wondered whether or not the human race, which could be so brutal sometimes, was worth saving, experiencing an existential crisis.
She was very nearly in a coma by the time the group arrived at the temple of the five elements in Egypt on Earth. Korben and the others figured out how to "open" the stones and release the four primary elements - earth, air, fire and water - but Leeloo, the living Fifth Element, proved more difficult. As the Dark Planet approached, she asked Korben what about life was worth saving, and was told love. Leeloo replied she was built to protect, not to love, but Korben replied he loved her and kissed her, renewing her faith in humanity. She then drew the power of the other four elements into herself to create the fifth - love. A beam of light shot from her mouth and into outer space, hitting and destroying the Dark Planet.
After the adventure, Korben and Leeloo were taken to the Nucleological Center, where they were hailed as the saviors of the universe. Under the supervision of Professor Mactilburgh they were placed in a private rejuvenation chamber to recuperate from their hard-won victory over the forces of evil, and here, away from the prying eyes of the press and scientists (Mactilburgh covered the viewing window) the two made love together.
