History

The Mandalorians were a civilization that came to inhabit the galaxy with them being centred on their homeworld of Mandalore situated in the Outer Rim. One of its inhabited moons was Concordia that served as a mining settlement where warriors were exiled.

It was said that the Mandalorians had endured conflicts since before the creation of the Galactic Republic.

Long ago, a Force-sensitive Mandalorian by the name of Tarre Vizsla joined the ranks of the Jedi Order. According to legend, he crafted his own Lightsaber known as the Darksaber that was a unique black-blade that became a symbol of his clan. After his death, the Darksaber was kept in the Jedi Temple where many years later it was stolen by members of House Vizsla.

Over time, a faction emerged in the civilization that were known as the New Mandalorians that were led by Duchess Satine that sought peace for their people. Around this time, corrupted was noted to had been rife in the ranks of the Mandalorian government. During the Clone Wars, the Mandalorians were approached by the Galactic Republic to serve as allies against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. It served as a neutral planet in the conflict though with Mandalore denied trade with non-neutral worlds.

In secret, Darth Maul came to consolidate his control over Mandalore and used Prime Minister Almec as the public face of his rule as the Mandalorians became secret members of the restored Shadow Collective. During this time, the former members of Deathwatch led by Lady Bo-Katan sought to depose his rule as the Sith Lord threatened their peoples way of life. By the time of the Outer Rim Sieges, they had determined that Maul was hiding at Mandalore's capital but lacked the power to siege the city. An opportunity presented itself when they encountered former Jedi Ahsoka Tano who convinced Bo-Katan to enlist the aid of the Republic. Thus, they met Jedi Generals Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker but a joint offensive was out of the question at the time as Coruscant itself came under attack from General Grievous. Despite that, General Skywalker suggested he would divide his 501st Legion to create a unit that would help the Mandalorians in the siege. Thus, the unit participated in a joint offensive with Lady Bo-Katan's forces that laid a siege of Sundari in an effort to capture the renegade Sith Lord Maul.

In the aftermath, the Jedi appointed Bo-Katan Kryze as Regent of Mandalore where she led it following the defeat of the Death Watch. When the Galactic Empire was formed, they attempted to force Bo-Katan to submit to their control with her refusing. However, she was betrayed by members of Clan Saxon who overthrew her leading to their appointment as leaders of Mandalore. With the occupation of their homeworld, the Mandalorian Protectors moved their home to Concord Dawn but fell under Imperial rule and continued to serve the Empire loyally. A number of Mandalorian warriors pledged their loyalty to the Empire where they served as deadly and efficient enforcers that formed the Imperial Super Commandos.

After the formation of the Galactic Empire, Gar Saxon was appointed as the Imperial Viceroy to Mandalore and was responsible for its loyalty to its new benefactors. The Protectors of Concord Dawn also came to swear loyalty to the Empire in order to preserve their existence with them receiving regular payments for their patrols of their space.

The emerging Rebel Alliance came to seek alternative passages through the Lothal Sector where they decided to seek out the Protectors of Concord Dawn. A fighter squadron was sent to make contact but upon learning that these were rebels their leader Fenn Rau looked to eliminate them. Ultimately, he was captured where he was forced to allow his territory to be used by the Rebels. Around this time, Viceroy Saxon decided to use this time to eliminate the Protectors and gathered his Super Commandos to destroy their base. This resulted in the surviving Protectors under Fenn Rau to ally with the Rebel Alliance against the Empire.

Once the Darksabre was recovered, Fenn Rau suggested that Sabine Wren wield the blade and use it to rally the Mandalorian clans under herself and unite them against the Empire.

Following Sabine's training, she, Rau, Jarrus, and Bridger returned to Krownest to Clan Wren's Stronghold. There, Sabine attempted to convince the clan's leader and her mother, Countess Ursa Wren, to join the rebellion. At first, Ursa decided to surrender the Jedi to Viceroy Saxon and his Imperial Super Commandos in exchange for the Darksaber and sparing her daughter. When Saxon branded her and Clan Wren enemies of the Empire, Ursa and her son Tristan fought Saxon and commandos alongside Rau and the Jedi. When Saxon tried to kill Ursa with the Darksaber, Sabine took Bridger's lightsaber and fought Saxon. Sabine was then able to reclaim the Darksaber and subdue Saxon. When Saxon tried to shoot Sabine, he was killed by Ursa. His death created a power vacuum among the Mandalorians. Sabine then decided to stay behind and help her mother, clan, and Rau find Mandalore's true leader, to whom she would give the Darksaber. Soon afterward, Bridger returned to Krownest, having escaped from the Battle of Atollon, to request help from Clan Wren for the rebels against Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was attacking the rebel base on Atollon. Although unable to send a full force, due to their current struggles against Clan Saxon, Ursa agreed to allow Sabine, Tristan, and Rau to lead several Mandalorian volunteers and ships to accompany Ezra and Chopper back to Atollon. The Gauntlet and several Fang fighters traveled back to Atollon, where they destroyed the Interdictor vessel that was preventing the rebels from escaping. Able to escape, the remaining rebels fled the system, while the Mandalorians returned to Krownest.

They then staged an assault on Mandalore itself in order to depose Tiber Saxon's rule though the Imperial governor had deployed a new weapon that targeted Mandalorian armour and kill its wearers. However, the weapon was incomplete with Saxon requiring its designer namely Sabine Wren herself in order to perfect it. Clan Wren under the leadership of Ursa and Sabine fought on Mandalore against Clan Saxon and the Empire. At some point during the Mandalorian civil war, Sabine and her younger brother, Tristan, arrived at the statue of Tarre Vizsla and discovered that the Empire had built an outpost situated on it. Sabine and Tristan destroyed the outpost and restored the statue to its original state. Clan Wren was joined by several other factions and clans including the sole Journeyman Protector Rau, Lady Bo-Katan's Clan Kryze, Clan Vizsla, Clan Rook, and Clan Eldar. Sabine and the Rebel Alliance's Spectres Jarrus and Bridger also attacked an Imperial prison hoping to find Alrich Wren, although Alrich had been moved.

Sabine then offered Kryze the Darksaber, but she refused knowing she was not the leader her sister, Satine, had been. Together they attacked a convoy guarded by the super commandos. They were then able to rescue Alrich. However, the commandos and the Empire then deployed an AT-DP armed with the "the Duchess" weapon prototype that disintegrated numerous warriors of Clans Wren and Kryze. Only Tristan and Ursa survived the onslaught. The survivors then regrouped. Sabine and Bo-Katan then planned to destroy it by sneaking aboard Governor Tiber Saxon's Star Destroyer near Sundari to atone for her role in creating the weapon. The combined Mandalorian and rebel forces managed to infiltrate Saxon's Star Destroyer. Following a skirmish, they destroyed the Duchess and Saxon's vessel. After the battle, Lady Bo-Katan assumed the Darksaber and the mantle of leadership over the Mandalorian clans. The Vizslas, Wrens, Kryzes, Rooks, Eldars, and the sole remaining Protector, Fenn Rau, pledged allegiance to the new Mand'alor.

During the Empire's reign, they were noted to had conducted a Great Purge of the Mandalorians thus causing them to scatter across space. During the purge, Mandalore was heavily bombed in the Night of a Thousand Tears.

Following the Great Purge, surviving Mandalorians went into hiding and their people were believed to have perished completely.

Overview

In appearance, the Mandalorians were largely humans from various worlds with their most common characteristic being the armour that they had worn into battle. These included distinctive helmets and they typically made use of jetpacks that gave them a great deal of ability to quickly move along the battlefield.

They were noted for being a proud race with a rich warrior culture. Mandalorians were a people that believed in the concept of honour though this was not the case with all their kind.

Their society was divided into a number of warrior clans that included:

  • Clan Kryze : a faction of warriors who eventually came under the leadership of Bo-Katan Kryze.
  • Clan Saxon :
  • Clan Wren :
  • Clan Vizsla :
  • Clan Rook :

Mandalorian society was divided into a number of factions with one being the peaceful New Mandalorians that were in power by the time of the Clone Wars. Children were referred to as foundlings who were considered the future of the tribe. Inter-fighting amongst the clans was noted for being common amongst the ranks of the Mandalorians.

One ancient group within their civilization were the Mandalorian Protectors who were warriors that served the ruler of Mandalore. Under the New Mandalorians, the Mandalorian Guard served as the elite bodyguards to the ruler of their world. During the Clone Wars, only these royal protectors were trusted to protect the life of Duchess Satine Kryze. Though turning their back on their war-like past, some of the old traditions continued among the Mandalorian Guard.

A renegade faction included the Death Watch who believed in a return to their people's warrior roots.

Skilled Mandalorian warriors joined the ranks of the Super Commandos.

Their belief system was known as the Way of the Mandalore that was a religion that governed their lives. Weapons were said to be part of their religion and they were reluctant to leave them. An important relic of the Mandalorians was a special lightsabre known as the Darksabre that was created by the only Force-sensitive of their people that joined the Jedi.

A game played by Mandalorians was cubikahd that was a holographic strategy game using cube-shaped board and gridlines. Each player had four “knives” to move on the surface, strategically placed until their opponent’s pieces were captured.

Whilst fighting the Jedi, the Mandalorians saw their use of the Force and sought to create a countermeasure with them developing the vambrace. These vambraces were equipped with various tools and weapons such as repulsors, grappling lines, paralyzing darts, shield emitters, paired blaster barrels, and flame throwers. One special form of ammunition was referred to as the whistling bird that were micro-missile munitions that fired from the wrist gauntlet. When fired, they made a whistling sound as they tracked and killed their targets in close proximity.

Mandalorian warriors were known to make use of jetpacks with their preferred one being the Z-6 Jetpack that was utilised by their commandos across the galaxy. They were noted for being fast and nimble where they allowed for sustained flight or even short bursts for tactical advantages in combat. In addition, they could be equipped with a top-loaded firing missile which could deal heavy damage to a target. A weakness of these jetpacks was that they were vulnerable to external impact damage causing them to ignite causing either significant injuries or even death.

A central aspect of Mandalorian society and culture was their armour which was made of a substance they called beskar. It was part of their identity with armors being centuries old and re-forged by their wearers to their liking. To Mandalorians, the armour had a history of blood shed and battles fought along with all the lives of the warriors that had worn it. As a result, the armor was seen as a part of their cultural identity and defined them as a people with Mandalorians unwilling to abandon it. Beskar was melted into the armour with the more completed set representing his status within society. Typically, a signet was crafted or one chosen by the armourer based on a previous kill by the Mandalorian in question.

During their fights against Force-sensitives, the Mandalorians created a device known as a Vault designed to contain such foes. These sarcophagus style machines were able to encase a person in a prison allowing them to be moved from different locations. In time, these were considered to be forbidden and illegal technology by the era of the Old Republic.

Mandalorians made use of Gauntlet Fighters that were sleek combat Starfighters that also served as troop transports. Their primary hull was flanked by large pivoting wings that held the vessels drives with the wings located on a collared mount allowing them to rotate independently from the main hull offering a great deal of manoeuvrability despite their size. A Gauntlet was able to hold 24 troopers in drop-seats that could depart through jetpacks whilst the fighter itself provided air support that was done so through its two forward laser cannons whilst a pair of rearward facing cannons protected the flank of its boarding tube. Another starfighter used by the Mandalorians was the Fang Fighter that was used by the Mandalorian Protectors of Concord Dawn. These formidable craft were tailor made for combat where they featured wing-mounted laser cannons along with a hidden proton torpedo port in its belly. The wings were able to pilot allowing for a vector thrust control that made the Fang capable of making turns that few other ships were capable of accomplishing.

Alternate Versions

  • In Star Wars Legends continuity, the Mandalorians were descended from a warrior race of alien humanoids known as the Taung who originally inhabited Coruscant before departing off world. They developed into a warrior culture looking for conquest with them attacking the Empress Teta system in the years after the Great Hyperspace War. During their attack, their ruling Mandalore was defeated by Ulic Qel-Droma leading to him earning their loyalty and the served as shock troopers for the Sith that were being led by Exar Kun. They ultimately left their allies after the Sith's defeat with a new Mandalore chosen following the death of the old one. Years later, they were manipulated by the Sith Empire in hiding who suggested the Mandalorians conquer the Galactic Republic. This led to the birth of the Neo-Crusaders whereby the Mandalorians recruited members of other races into their culture that were provided army and fought the Republic in the devastating Mandalorian Wars.
