Biography

Meliodas, the Dragon Sin of Wrath.

Meliodas (Japanese: メリオダス, Hepburn: Meriodasu) was a male member of the Demon Clan where he was the son of the Demon King and the brother of Zeldris. During these years, it was noted that he came under the tutelage of the powerful demon named Chandler who taught him the Full Counter ability. He came to rise to the position of leader of the elite band of warriors known as the Ten Commandments where he was bestowed with the Commandment of Love. It was noted that his strength and ruthlessness made him the most likely candidate to be the next Demon King. In time, his reputation led to him being feared by his enemies with even the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan acknowledging his power.

In the last days of the war, he and Elizabeth came to be confronted by their respective parents namely the Demon King and the Supreme Deity. Despite their enmity, they two shared a mutual dissatisfaction over their children's defiance at their authority and put aside their rivalry in order to punish the pair. Meliodas battled his father but was easily overpowered by the Demon King with Elizabeth facing a similar situation against the Supreme Deity. The two were then given a punishment that was worse than death with the Supreme Deity cursing Meliodas with immortality causing him to resurrect everytime he died but at the cost of some of his emotions being consumed. Meanwhile, the Demon King cursed Elizabeth with a perpetual cycle of reincarnation whereby she would die and be reborn in a new body with no memories of her past until a set time where her power would return and she would die again. This prevented the pair from ever finding love together with Meliodas being forced to see her die over and over. Once cast, Meliodas was unconscious where he came to miss the end of the Holy War and when he awoke he found the conflict over along with the dead body of Elizabeth. Meliodas then came to mourn her and was unaware of the curses placed on the pair leading to him wandering the ruined lands of Britannia. This was until one day he found a human girl that resemble Elizabeth and spent time with her as the two became close overtime. Eventually, she gained her powers and eventually her memories whereupon she told Meliodas of the curse that had been cast on them. She then made Meliodas promise her that he would do whatever it took to break the curse placed on them whereupon this incarnation of her died. Since that time, Meliodas had lived to see a new incarnation of Elizabeth born whilst the curse of his father made sure that he saw them die before his eyes each time.

For the next 3,000 years, he wandered until he came to enter into the employ of the Holy Knights of the kingdom of Danafor.

Twenty six years ago, he and the Deadly Sins were involved in a number of quests as they kept the lands safe from harm. One included journeying to the Kingdom of Edinburgh after it was awakened by the Vampire Clan who had managed to escape their millennia of imprisonment. Working together, they came to kill the vampires except for Gelda who Meliodas came to seal away once again.

Around 27 years ago, he was noted to have had a brief encounter with Merlin where he asked her for a way of breaking the curse on him. She suggested freeing the Ten Commandments in order to use the power of Zeldris but Meliodas refused as he felt that this would be too dangerous for the world and that his brother would never agree to help him.

One day, he was at the Boar Hat where he served his disgusting meals and ordering Hawk his talking pig to clean up the vomit of his customers. It was then that the inn was visited by the infamous Rust Knight who the customers mistakenly believed was one of the Seven Deadly Sins. The scared patrons left the inner and shortly afterwards the knight collapsed revealing the person inside to be a woman. When she awoke, Meliodas offered her his food and asked what she was doing in the armor. She explained that she was seeking out the Seven Deadly Sins to get their aid but at this point some of the villagers had notified some knights about the appearance of the Rust Knight. They then demand Meliodas to hand the person to them where one of the angered knights pretended to be a Holy Knight. Meanwhile, the woman fled into the woods which the knights noticed and came to pursue her. However, Meliodas and Hawk rescued her where they asked her to continue the reason she was fleeing the knights. She revealed that she had been searching for the Seven Deadly Sins because the kingdom's Holy Knights had orchestrated a coup and taken control of the lands. Escaping them, she came to believe that the Seven Deadly Sins were the kingdom's only hope and had been searching for them despite their reputation. Abruptly, the cliff the three were standing on was cut off by an evil Holy Knight named Twigo. However, Meliodas rescued both woman and Hawk where in that moment Twigo noticed the earring his quarry wore which identified her as the kingdom's third princess Elizabeth Liones. The knights attacked the three with Meliodas saving her whilst Elizabeth attempted to shield him in order to prevent him from being involved in her matters. This though made Meliodas smile as he revealed his own identity to her just as Twigo attacked. He revealed that he was in fact one of the Seven Deadly Sins as was the Sin of Wrath. Repelling Twigo's attack with his broken sword, he came to easily defeat the Holy Knight. Meliodas then explained that he had been in search for his fellow Seven Deadly Sins and offered her a place to accompany him on his journey which she tearfully accepted.

Awakening from his injuries, he came to Elizabeth's side as Chandler was about to kill her but his former master instead bowed at seeing Meliodas. At this point, he was not fully consumed by his earlier memories of being a Commandment but he came to feel that there was no means of saving Elizabeth's life without further power. Thus, he resolved to return to the Demon Clan and in fact become the Demon King so that this power could be used to undo the curse on his love. Taking Elizabeth with him, his friends came to plead for him to stay with them but Meliodas instead disbanded the Seven Deadly Sins as he returned to Camelot alongside Chandler. Arriving at the castle, they were initially greeted with hostility from Zeldris who had no intention of helping his brother and in fact wanted the throne for himself. However, Meliodas was privy to a secret held by Zeldris and promised to grant it if he was the new Demon King. This was the fact that his love the vampire Gelda was still alive and that he had sealed her. He then offered to free her and re-unite her with Zeldris if his brother helped him acquiring the Commandments so that he could become the demon king.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Meliodas was a short male who was seemingly human with messy blond hair and emerald eyes along with a muscular body. Despite his status and seeming youth, he was actually more older with him being over 3,000 years old. Despite this being the case, his appearance often made strangers mistake him for a child and underestimate him. Due to his short stature, he often confused for being a child. He was once known as Meliodas the Love (慈愛のメリオダス, Jiai no Meriodasu) when he headed the Ten Commandments. Among the Seven Deadly Sins, he was known as the Dragon Sin of Wrath'.

As a result of his curse, he tended to lose memories and emotions every time he was killed. Accessing his demon powers caused him to revert back to the time when he was a loyal member of the demon race.

As a fighter, he was shown to be a skilled warrior where he used his fighting techniques to their full potential. With his sword, he could create clones that were used as distractions and part of feints allowing him to deal a fatal blow to an enemy.

He was the son of the Demon King (魔神王) who was the progenitor and leader of the Demon Clan. Meliodas also had a brother who greatly resembled him and was named Zeldris. He was regarded as the favoured child to inherit the throne with his father claiming that he wanted Meliodas to become the new Demon King. This resulted in a great deal of resentment from his brothers who had similar desires to become the rulers of the Demon clan

For a time, he came to believe that Estarasso was a young sibling but beyond a few details he could not remember much about him. Ultimately, it was revealed that the memories of him were actually a fake and were created by a forbidden spell made by the original Gowther. This caused the Angel Mael's existence to be rewritten as a demon where he was given the identity of Estarasso and thought of as another son of the Demon King.

Meliodas came to love Elizabeth of the Goddess Clan with this causing him to turn against his own people to side with her. Such was his love that he was willing to damn himself by becoming the Demon King if it gave him the power to free his love from the curse placed on her. Meliodas would do anything for Elizabeth as when he put his hands through a special barrier created by the goddesses that burnt away at his arms. He also had her back when she attempted to purify Indura Derieri and Monspeet, standing in the way of Ludociel when he attempted to kill the demons instead. Their love for each other was so great that they continued their relationship despite the laws of their clans and the fact their overwhelmingly powerful parents in their furious rage would kill them, even going as far as facing them in battle. Despite their efforts, they were completely outclassed by the gods and were quickly killed and suffered punishment crueller than death. After getting revived by his curse and seeing Elizabeth's dead body, Meliodas cries in grief and later promises her he would break the curse at all costs.

The demon Chandler was noted to had been his teacher since his childhood and taught him to be a warrior. His mentor had long held hope for Meliodas to serve as the heir to the Demon King and wanted him to to fulfil his destiny.

Powers and abilities

Though human in appearance, Meliodas was a member of the Demon race and thus gained all the superhuman abilities of their people. Despite his appearance, he was noted for being thousands of years old. He had incredible regenerative powers whereby his shadowy based form could re-attach severed limbs. All demons were noted to possess seven hearts and the destruction of all of them meant his death. However, a curse from the Demon King made Meliodas immortal and he eventually came back to life as a result.

His inherent power was known as Full Counter (全反撃フルカウンター Furukauntā) that had the ability to reflect a powerful attack back at his attacker. This ability was actually taught to Meliodas by his mentor the demon Chandler who also made use of this power. It was a skill that was particularly effective against more powerful enemies as it made their attack even more powerful when it was reflected back at them. However, this ability could only act in response to an attack and he could not initiate the ability himself. Furthermore, he had to be aware of the attack and time his Full Counter at the correct moments. Thus, hidden attacks or strikes from his blindside could not be countered by this ability. According to the Demon King, his skill in the technique had not yet achieved the mastery that had been attained by his mentor Chandler.

Another technique used by him was Hellblaze (獄炎ヘルブレイズ Herubureizu; literally meaning "Hellfire") which allowed him to produce black flames. These flames were powerful enough to nullify an immortal's healing ability and leaving wounds on their bodies. He could also make use of Trillion Dark (トリリオン・ダーク, Toririon Dāku) where he launched a barrage of small spheres of high concentrated darkness at his opponent.

Meliodas was capable of reaching a more powerful state called Assault Mode (殲滅状態アサルトモード, Asaruto Mōdo) whereby he accessed his full demonic powers. According to Melascula, back in the days when Meliodas was leader of the Ten Commandments even they feared him when he entered into this state. When entering this mode, he temporarily was robbed of his feelings and emotions thus causing him to his original state as a demon.

He came to wield a Sacred Treasure known as Demon Sword Lostvayne (魔剣 ロストヴェイン, Maken Rosutovein) that was a demon-splitting sword. The sword had a special ability known as Jitsuzō Bunshin (実像分身じつぞうぶんしん literally meaning "Physical Clone") that allowed Meliodas to create up to four clones of himself. Each clone though retained only a fraction of the power of the original where a single clone had half the power of the original. Meanwhile, further clones led to the power level being halved among each of them. It was this ability that made it highly compatible with his Full Counter ability and allowed him to use it much more dangerously.

Using his sword, he could perform a 'Kami Chigiri (神かみ千斬ちぎり Kami Chigiri; literally meaning "Thousand Divine Slayer") whereby he cuts his opponent with a total of a thousand times in an instant.

When serving his father the Demon King, he was the original wielder of the Commandment of Love (慈じ愛あい, Jiai), which was bestowed upon him by the Demon King. Its power meant that those that stood before him with hatred in their hearts being rendered powerless to harm or inflict damage on others. To ally with the Goddess clan, he had to relinquish this power which was taken back and given to another.

Meliodas could also absorb the commandments of all his former compatriots and take them onto himself thus increasing his own power. It was said that if he absorbed all the commandments then he would gain power equal to his father the Demon King and in fact was the basis for him to inheriting the throne. A special spell was uttered that could be used to claim a commandment but it had to either be relinquished by the bearer or they had to be slain in order to gain the power. While absorbing the Commandments, Meliodas produced an almost impenetrable field of darkness surrounding him, which Merlin stated she could do nothing to destroy, needing Ludociel's Sanctuary along with the Melascula's Commandment that Merlin hold, being pulled towards Meliodas to be able to enter. Only the Original Demon could dispel the space. Ludociel states that if Meliodas become the new Demon King, then all of the forces of Stigma would certainly be defeated with the Supreme Deity now being unable to help them. After successfully absorbing all of the Commandments, Meliodas became the Demon King, therefore increasing his powers to the same godly levels as his father possesses. His extraordinary magical power completely clouds the entire environment in darkness and leaves all the Seven Deadly Sins, Mael, Ludociel, and Elizabeth in absolute awe and sweating.

Originally, he came to serve the Demon Clan and even joined the ranks of their elite force the Ten Commandments (十戒, Jikkai) where he served as their leader. After defecting, he joined the ranks of Stigma (光の聖痕スティグマ Sutiguma) where he was regarded as a traitor by his people as a result. Thousands of years later, he was one of the founders of the legendary order of knights that were known as the Seven Deadly Sins (七つの大罪, Nanatsu no Taizai).

The Supreme Deity came to curse him with immortality as punishment for him turning against his people and for falling in love with a member of the Goddess race. This meant he was kept eternally young and at the age the curse was made where he simply resurrected every time he was killed. This was to work in conjunction with a similar curse made on Elizabeth whereby she would constantly die and be reincarnated with Meliodas forced to see his love always dying as a result. When dying, it was shown that his father the Demon King was able to speak to him.

During his self-imposed exile, he came to be the owner and proprietar of a tavern called the Boar Hat (豚の帽子亭, Buta no Bōshi-tei).
