Paul (Proteus)
Paul was a small-time American heroin dealer. He was also addicted to his own wares. He, his girlfriend Linda and their friends Mark and Christine were in Asia buying heroin to sell abroad. He was the owner and captain of the yacht the group was using. Paul angered the Triads they were buying from, who cut off one of his fingers. An Englishman named Alex prevented the Triads from harming Paul further, and, in return, he and his girlfriend Rachel were allowed to join their group and earn a cut of the money they made selling the drugs. Paul never suspected both Alex and Rachel were actually DEA agents.
When the yacht sank, the shipwrecked group survived by drifting in a lift raft. After stumbling upon a floating corpse, the group found their way to a Brinkstone-owned oil rig, which turned out to be a front for the top-secret Proteus Project. As the group explored the rig, Mark, also an addict, begged Paul for some of his heroin. When the group bedded down for the night, each couple to a room, Linda urged Paul to give Mark some of the drugs. Obliging her, Paul stepped outside and was immediately seized and dragged away by Charlie, who killed and absorbed him. His mind was trapped inside of Charlie's body until Alex later killed the mutant shark with fire, releasing him in death.
