Rachel (Proteus)
Rachel was an agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency. Along with her boyfriend and fellow agent Alex, her mission was to infiltrate a group of small-time smugglers led by Paul who were buying heroin from a group of Triads. She and Alex managed to ingratiate themselves to the group when Alex saved Paul. This earned the duo passage aboard the yacht owned by Paul's friend Mark as well as a cut of the loot.
Rachel and Alex were to journey with the group to learn who they were selling the heroin to. The mission went wrong when the yacht sank. The six survivors drifted in a life raft until they stumbled across a Brinkstone-owned oil rig which was a front for a genetic research program called the Proteus Project. Throughout, Rachel and her boyfriend maintained their cover, but their DEA training came in handy with helping the group protect themselves from Charlie, the mutant abomination spawned by the Proteus Project. When they found discarded weapons originally belonging to the Proteus guards, Rachel taught Paul and the others how to use them.
When the group encountered an apparent survivor, a guard named Buckley, it turned out he was just the last strong-willed mind trapped inside of the creature to exert control over the main body while the creature had heroin in its system (from eating Paul). When the drug wore off, Buckley's mind was subsumed and he turned back into Charlie, who attacked the group. Rachel was injured by the beast's claws before Alex and the others were able to drive it away. She was taken and put into the facility's infirmary and left there to recuperate while Alex went and watched some tapes made by Dr. Shelley in an effort to learn more about Charlie and the Proteus Project.
While he was gone, Charlie, in a malleable slimelike form, oozed through a vent above the sleeping Rachel's head and went inside her mouth, taking her own from within. She became a part of Charlie. The shark used her form to seduce and kill and absorb Mark and then Mark's girlfriend Christine. When Alex returned, Charlie again used Rachel's form, but Alex figured out what had happened, and was able to escape being absorbed like Mark. Later, on the top of the rig, as Alex and Linda were trying to escape, Charlie appeared as Rachel a final time before transforming into its true form to battle Alex. Rachel's mind was finally freed from Charlie in death, when Alex burned the beast alive with fire.
