Biography

Origin

Shado with Oliver Queen in Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters v1 #2.

Shado

One year after her encounter with Green Arrow, Shado found herself back in Japan, facing the wrath of her Yakuza Oyabun. By failing to execute one of her targets (the man Green Arrow had killed), she had failed her mission. Her Oyabun decided that, in accordance with Yakuza tradition, she should sever her thumb in atonement. Her Kyūdō sensei, however, refused to allow his greatest student to destroy her skills, and drew a bow and arrow on the Oyabun. Once Shado escaped, the sensei allowed himself to be killed by the Oyabun. (Green Arrow v2 #9) Shado, hearing of the murder, returned and killed the Oyabun in turn, then fled to Hawaii. Green Arrow was then blackmailed by Gregory Osborne into tracking her down. No sooner did he find her, however, than she shot him in the chest with an arrow. (Green Arrow v2 #10) Shado helped nurse Oliver back to health from his injury. It was later revealed that during this time, while he was still delirious from pain and medications, Shado raped him and conceived a son. (Green Arrow v2 #11) Once Green Arrow recovered from his injuries he aided Shado in defending herself from the Yakuza hunting her. However, the two were unable to prevent the death of her friend, Emilio Alvaro. After a bloody battle against a Yakuza death-squad, Green Arrow and Shado discovered that the Yakuza had been following them using a tracking device in Oliver's quiver. Realizing that he had been used, Oliver arranged to meet Agent Osborne, telling him and two Japanese "agents" accompanying him that Shado had died. It was then revealed that Mr. Alvaro was the true "map" - he was the last survivor of a team of Filipinos that had buried their country's treasury to keep it from the Japanese, only telling Shado the location. It was then revealed that Osborne was working without the CIA's knowledge, with agents of a deposed Filipino dictator, and had recruited Yakuza muscle by promising a share of the gold and Shado's death. With Shado's help, Green Arrow was able to bring Osborne to justice and lead the FBI to his Yakuza allies. Shado and Green Arrow then parted ways once again. (Green Arrow v2 #12)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different series of events. Shado was noted as a skilled assassin who was proficient in archery.

Her father worked for the Yakuza where he lost the Oyabun a great deal of money and thus brought dishonour on himself. As a result, he killed himself to maintain his honour whilst his debt passed onto to his daughter Shado who was forced to continue to work for the Yakuza. (Green Arrow v6 #7)

She was sought out by Robert Queen and Simon Lacroix who wanted to learn her skills. To gain her attention, they hired the young woman to target the Yakuza in Tokyo where they intended to see her skills in action. Afterwards, Queen and Lacroix later confronted her who attacked them but she later determined that they were not trying to kill her. The pair explained that they desired to learn from her archery skills as they sought out the Green Arrow talisman. During their time together, Robert Queen had an affair with Shado who became pregnant with his child with her giving birth to a daughter named Emiko Queen. Shado, Robert and Simon later discovered the Green Arrow along with a secret society of weapon masters known as the Outsiders. After acquiring the Green Arrow talisman, they formed the Arrow Clan of the Outsiders but Simon Lacroix became corrupted by this power leading to him betraying his allies. He seemingly killed Robert Queen for leadership of the Arrow Clan whereupon he took the name Komodo and kidnapped Emiko Queen to raise as his own daughter. Komodo then had Shado given over the cruel Count Vertigo of the nation of Vlatava. (Green Arrow v5 #23)

To clear off her debt to the Ninth Circle, they tasked Shado with eliminating both Brodercik and Moira Queen after the pair had failed them. (Green Arrow v6 #36)

Overview

Personality and attributes

She believed that sentiment got people killed and used the story of her great-grandmother Kuzumi Adachi who had rushed to meet her lover only to die in the process. Shado believed that she only brought death to the world but this view somewhat changed after she had Emiko. She said that she loved her daughter Emiko like she's never loved anyone else before to the point that it scared her as she felt that she was the only weakness in her life. As such, she felt that ultimately she had to chose between herself and her daughter with Shado ultimately choosing herself and deciding to eliminate Emiko. (Teen Titans Special v1 #1)
