History

Origin

Sinestro Corps War in Green Lantern v4 #21.

The Sinestro corps were an interstellar organization of Power Ring wielders who tapped into the yellow light of fear in the Emotional Spectrum. (Green Lantern v4 #10) This saw the enslavement of the Qwardians of the Anti-Matter Universe who were forced to forge countless power rings that could be used to arm an entire corps. (Green Lantern v4 #15) Under the patronage of the Anti-Monitor, the Yellow Lanterns gathered as an army to serve their 'guardian of fear' with them being led by Sinestro. This saw them launching a surprise attack against Oa where they killed many members of the Green Lantern Corps though this onslaught was designed to mask them secretly freeing the Cyborg Superman Hank Henshaw and Superboy-Prime. A yellow Power Ring was also used to abduct Green Lantern Kyle Rayner who was then forcibly bonded with the Parallax fear entity with him along with the Cyborg Superman, Superboy-Prime and Sinestro becoming the heralds of the Anti-Monitor. (Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special v1 #1)

The Corps formed an alliance with numerous other organizations with the intention of destroying the Green Lantern Corps. This included the Children of the White Lobe and the Manhunters.

Sinestro Corps War

With his forces gathered on Qward, Sinestro enacted his plans where he staged an assault against the Green Lanterns in the positive matter universe. (Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special v1 #1)

Aftermath

After the crisis, the Sinestro Corps regrouped and settled on Korugar where they were supposed to protect the natives but instead they began to enslave them. Around this time, Sinestro had been chosen by a green Power Ring and forcibly made a Green Lantern. He was sent to ensure peace in his home sector only to find his people enslaved by his former followers. A Yellow Lantern discovered him with Thaal Sinestro killing the Corpsmen before going to Earth to meet his former protégé Hal Jordan who had been removed from the Green Lantern Corps. (Green Lantern v5 #1) Sinestro was actually pursued by a Yellow Lantern who had hoped to kill him in a bid to take over the Sinestro Corps but was killed by the Korugarian. It was then that Sinestro revealed that he had deputised Hal Jordan to assist him in freeing Korugar and apprehending his former followers among the Yellow Lanterns. (Green Lantern v5 #2) Thaal Sinestro had intended to sneak in and use his failsafe to deactivate the Central Battery thus leaving the Yellow Lanterns powerless. However, he broke cover after see one of the Korugarians nearly killed leading to him attacking the Yellow Lanterns whilst Jordan was sent to initiate the failsafe process. (Green Lantern v5 #3)

During their leaders self-imposed exile, Arkillo came to take over leadership of the 'Arkillo Corps' where he had hundreds of new rings forged and sent out to recruit anyone that would swear allegiance to him. This was with the intention of increasing the Yellow Lantern ranks so that they could battle the Green Lantern Corps. The new Corpsmen were said to had been difficult to control with Arkillo intending to unite them against a single enemy but he was unaware that a number of them were conspiring to overthrow him. During this time, a new threat to the cosmos emerged in a church of anti-emotion called the Paling who were spreading across space. To combat these threats, Lyssa Drak went in search of Sinestro and she urged him to be active again where she revealed that a number of his people had survived the destruction of Korugar. This led to Sinestro recharging his ring as he sought the survival of his species but acknowledged that he would need to resume control of the Sinestro Corps to secure their protection. (Sinestro v1 #1) This saw him returning to the Yellow Lanterns where he deposed Arkillo and restored his own position as leader of the corps. He then went about rescuing the Korugarians where he placed them on the desolate world of Necropolis to be their new home whilst the Sinestro Corps would claim the planet's moon as its headquarters. Sinestro then conducted a purge of the corps ranks in order to remove any dissidents. (Sinestro v1 #2) He then assigned them on a mission to recover more Korugarians from a remote world but his team had their first encounter against the Paling. (Sinestro v1 #4)

He contemplated his next action after contact with the New Gods and decided to lead his forces to protect Nok from the forces of New Genesis. Despite their counterattack, the New Gods managed to butcher many of the Yellow Lanterns though this did not worry Sinestro as he felt it was trimming the unworthy from his ranks. He ordered a full retreat allowing their allies to escape but left his weakest members behind as a rear guard where he detonated their Power Rings in order to deal damage to the New God General Bekka's forces. (Sinestro v1 #6)

At this point, an unknown enemy targeted the Green Lanterns with everyone that wore their power rings disappearing for the cosmos. In the void left by them, Sinestro positioned his Corps to take over as the new enforcers of order in the universe. (Sinestro v1 #13)

After the defeat of the Paling, Sinestro himself had been weakened and he had passed on leadership of his Corps to his daughter Soranik Natu. She removed the rings from the newly recruited members of Earth and left behind Arkillo along with Saint Walker as the guardian of Sector 2814 after which she took the Sinestro Corps back into space. (Sinestro v1 #21) With their position secure, Warworld was positioned in Sector 0 at the sit of the remains of Oa. Sinestro merged once more with the Parallax entity after his body had grown old and withered from his previous struggles. He then mandated that his Corps ensure order was maintained by instilling fear across the universe. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #1)

After the formation of the United Planets, a summit came to held on Oa as the interstellar alliance sought to discuss the addition of the Green Lantern Corps in their ranks. However, there were many worlds that opposed the addition of Oa into their membership and highlighted the previous failures of the Guardians of the Universe. Among those in attendance were the Sinestro Corps where Sinestro gave a speech before the delegates that warned them against adding Oa into the United Planets. Despite his words, a vote was passed amongst he attendees and it was ultimately decided to allow Oa to join their alliance. (Green Lantern v6 #1)

Overview

Sinestro assembles his Corps.

The Sinestro Corps was similar to the Green Lantern Corps but instead of using willpower as their focus of their energy, they made use of fear.

They believed in the use of fear as a means of promoting order in the universe. (Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special v1 #1) Their edict was thus to bring about order and justice through fear. (Sinestro v1 #2)

Those chosen to join the Corps were given power and in return it was their duty instil fear throughout their sector. (Green Lantern v4 #18)

Thus, the Corps chose those individuals who had the capacity to instil fear in the hearts of others. When chosen, the ring takes them to the Anti-Matter Universe world of Qward where they are encased in a fear lodge; a shell that covers their entire body leaving them trapped in darkness. In this state, they are required to face their own fears in order to activate their power ring thus giving them the means to exit the fear lodge. However, not all manage to pass this process with some dying of starvation or thirst whilst others are driven mad by their fears and thus die within the fear lodge. But those that do manage to spark their power ring are freed and taken to Lyssaa Drak; the Keeper of the Book of Parallax who tells them tales of the Sinestro Corps most evil members.

The oath of the Sinestro Corps was:

"In blackest day, in brightest night,"
"Beware your fears made into light"
"Let those who try to stop what's right,"
"Burn like my power... Sinestro's might!"

Recruits into the Corps were placed in structures called a Fear Lodge where all they had with them was their ring in the absolute darkness. Once inside, they had no way to exit the Lodge without igniting their ring without tapping into the Power Battery. Through their fear, they needed to tap into enough fear to spark their Power Ring. The length of time varied as it depended on a person finding their innermost horrors. Some recruits were noted to had died of thirst and hunger as they tried to claw their out of the Fear Lodge. Some had clawed out their eyes or even taken their own lives in the process. Those that lighted their rings emerged with the ability to instil great fear being fully realised. (Green Lantern v4 #20)

A key relic of the Sinestro Corps was a tome called the Book of Parallax that was used to record the terror caused by its Yellow Lanterns. (Green Lantern v4 #18)

It was said that the Sinestro Corps had been created with a code of conduct made by the founder of their organization. (Green Lantern v5 #2) A ring spawn command could be initiated that could rigger a power ring allowing them to be dispatched to recruit a member into the corps. (Green Lantern v4 #15) Under the Corps, the death of any member meant the other Corpsmen sought the death of their killer. They believed under their law that a life was exchanged for a life. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #25)

One group within the Sinestro Corps was its Science Division tasked with study, research and production of new technology. (Sinestro v1 #15) A secret police force called the Black Circle were also created with the purpose of using lethal force in finding threats within their ranks and eliminating them. (Sinestro v1 #22)

They were capable of reversing the subatomic polarity within them and creating a breach into the positive matter universe. (Green Lantern v4 #15) These yellow rings were capable of travelling across space under their own power in order to find recruits that were deemed to have the ability to instil fear. It was shown that they were capable of recalibrating their travels and avoiding pursuers attempting to capture them. In on case, a yellow power ring was capable forcing itself onto a target's figure and teleporting them to Sinstro Corps headquarters thus allowing them to capture the target. (Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special v1 #1)

The Central Battery could be triggered into active search status whereby it began to seek out new recruits for the Corps. (Green Lantern v5 #3)

It did not make the yellow energy of fear but rather collected it from all of sentient emotions. (Green Lantern v4 #20) After constructing it, Sinestro built a failsafe into his Central Power Battery whereby a Green Lantern Power Battery placed inside of it would shut it down. If it detected danger, it could engage a disintegration process whereby it disintegrated any threats inside of it. (Green Lantern v5 #3) He could also remotely self-destruct protocol to certain Yellow Lantern rings causing them to detonate and deal damage to enemies. (Sinestro v1 #6)
