Star Brand wielders in Starbrand and Nightmask v1 #6.

The Star Brand was one of the universal systems created by the Builders that was triggered during a White Event to create a defence system on a planetary scale to aid in the progress of a civilization on a world. (Avengers v5 #8) It was known that the dawn of the first White Event occurred 66 million years when an asteroid struck the planet Earth which brought the end of the native dinosaurs. The planet had drawn the object to crash onto the surface in order to open a way to the Superflow. The sacrifice of the giant reptiles was made to awaken the power of the planet to protect itself from dangers. Thus, the world's first cosmically empowered protector was given the Starbrand with the creature unleashing its might against dangers. The beast eventually died and its remains remained buried until 65 million years ago when the caveman Vnn uncovered it. He was transformed by the power where he turned his wrath against the marauding Deviants that preyed on humanity. (Avengers v8 #26) A million years ago, the Star Brand joined forces with the Phoenix, Odin, Black Panther, Iron Fist, a Spirit of Vengeance and a Agamotto in defending the world against a renegade Celestial known as the Fallen. They defeated the creature and buried it within the Earth to prevent it from summoning the Final Host to destroy Earth. (Marvel Legacy v1 #1)

An abnormal White Event caused a Starbrand to be imparted on Kevin Kale Connor where he could not control its power and it killed everyone around him at his college. (Avengers v5 #8)

The world of Kree-Pama came to be engulfed by a White Event that led to a female Kree warrior named Va-Sohn being chosen as her world's Star Brand. However, rather than use her powers in her role, she came to kill the other chosen cosmic systems due to no Spitfire being selected to oppose her. She spared her world's Cipher in order to allow them to provide her intelligence on threats. (Starbrand & Nightmask v1 #5) She then decided to aggressively use her abilities to eliminate dangers to the Kree people. Among her targets was the planet Tarnax VII that was a training camp for Super-Skrulls. Va-Sohn was responsible for destroying the entire planet whereupon she and the Cipher Joras-Kyl were teleported to the Starbrand Structure by the Libra Gustav Brandt. Whilst there, she was pitted against the Earth's Star Brand which was Kevin Connor. However, they were unable to fight, as a fail-safe in the Starbrand power caused them to become attracted to one another and kiss instead. Due to this, they called off the fight and Va-Sohn agreed not to attack any more worlds, as Kevin would be there thus making any such event awkward for the two of them. Therefore, Va-sohn and Joras-Kyl were returned to their homeworld to reconsider their options. (Starbrand & Nightmask v1 #6)

A new Star Brand was selected with this being the child of a human migrant worker named Suzanne Selby. She was working in Shi'ar space when she was arrested by the border patrol for being an illegal immigrant. At the time, she was pregnant when she was sentenced to the Ravenstarr prison galaxy. During transit, her child became the host of the Star Brand whose power caused Suzanne to react violently. She caused untold devastation in the maximum security prison galaxy with this attracting the attention of the Avengers, the Heralds Three and the Shi'ar Majestor Gladiator with the latter two intending to eliminate the threat posed by a Star Brand user. In the ensuing battle, the Avengers helped Suzanne deliver the child but she died in the process with the new born girl taken in by Earth's heroes as hostilities ended. This saw them taking the Star Brand child back to Earth where she was kept in their care for a time. (Avengers v8 #30)

Later on, a breach in the God Quarry threatened the entire Multiverse with Starbrand volunteering to seal it from the other side but Ghost Rider beat her to it. Nevertheless, she sacrificed herself along with Phoenix Firehair to undo the damage the Masters had done to the other Earths. (Avengers Assemble Omega v1 #1)

Overview

In appearance, the Starbrand was said to be a planetary defence system. It was noted as being the best defensive system that the universe could devise. A lot of energy was required to drive a Starbrand across the universe and into a recipient. (Newuniversal v1 #4) As part of the universal machine, the Starbrand was a system in place that was derived from a White Event that created or altered an inhabitant to take the position. It served as a form of planetary defence system which required an amount of energy to defend its charge. As a result, they were notable for being capable of destroying entire worlds. (Avengers v5 #7) The Starbrand Avatar had a starbrand insignia on the palm of their hand which could fire enormous amounts of energy. With this power, the avatar was tasked with protecting the people of the planet as they progress through a change period to become an advanced society. (Avengers v5 #8)

As a Cosmic System, a failsafe was instituted to prevent Starbrands of different worlds from killing one another bearer by causing them to face an attraction to one another instead. (Starbrand and Nightmask v1 #6)

Users

  • Vnn : a male human living on Earth circa 1,000,000 BC. Knowing he was born different, he left his tribe in fear of what would happen if the others found out he was gay, seeking a Garden he had seen in a dream, where — on the brink of death — he was saved by Brrkk, who lived there alone, and the two became lovers. They lived together in peace until the Deviants attacked, seeking to kill them and claim the Garden's power source for themselves. While Vnn and Brrkk were able to defend the Garden for a short while, the Deviants triggered a cave-in and the two fell into a chasm deep below the Garden. Brrkk was killed, but Vnn survived and found the corpse of a dinosaur that possessed the Starbrand. Vnn absorbed the power of the Starbrand and used it to defeat his assailants, razing the Garden to the ground in the process, though he felt unworthy of the power and believed Brrkk had been meant to claim it. A few months later, he joined the Stone Age Avengers. (Avengers v8 #26)
