Supergirl (Kara Zor-El)

Pre-Crisis
Sole survivor of the doomed planetoid Argo (formerly Argo City, which hurtled away with buildings intact and people alive after Krypton's destruction, with a huge bubble of air conveniently attached), Kara Zor-El was rocketed to Earth as the rest of the inhabitants were dying of Kryptonite poisoning. She is Superman's cousin (her father, Zor-El, was brother to Superman's father, Jor-El) and wears a red, yellow and blue costume emblazoned with the family crest. On Earth, she gained powers and abilities identical to those of every other Kryptonian survivor. She took up residence in an orphanage in Midvale, under the name of Linda Lee, hiding her blonde hair under a brunette wig, and functioning as Supergirl in secret (at the insistence of Superman).
Kara was eventually adopted by Fred and Edna Danvers, and attended Midvale High and Stanhope College under the name Linda Lee Danvers. Her secret identity is known to Superman, the Danverses, and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Kara resigned her membership in the Legion at the age of twenty-one.
Supergirl had two "super-pets," Comet the Super-Horse, and Streaky.
Supergirl died valiantly battling the Anti-Monitor during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. All memories of Supergirl were erased as the post-Crisis timeline was retroactively rewritten, but her spirit lived on, perhaps to take another form.

Supergirl (Matrix)

Matrix was a protoplasmic creation of a benevolent Lex Luthor from a pocket universe. She was a shapeshifting artificial being, created in memory of the missing Superboy and his late wife Lana Lang. She was also implanted with Lana's memories. The fledging superhero travelled to the main Earth to bring back Superman to help battle evil Kryptonian criminals that had invaded. The world ended up being destroyed anyway, with Matrix as its only survivor, so Superman brought her back with him to his Earth and left her with the Kents to recover. She eventually struck out on her own, but it would take her a while to get re-adjusted. She temporarily took up with Lex Luthor II (actually the original Lex Luthor in disguise), thinking him to be like the good Lex who created her. Luthor couldn't deceive her forever, though, and she took off again.
Supergirl later merged with Linda Danvers, a teenager from Leesburg.
