Biography

Origin

Weapon H in Weapon X v3 #8.

Clayton Cortez was a male human born in the modern age where from a young age he became enamoured by the worlds superheroes with him wanting to become one. (Weapon H v1 #10) It was noted that he had a rough childhood as he had been beaten by his father and bullies while growing up. (Weapon H v1 #7)

He came to operate on a number of missions for Eaglestar with him being involved in numerous massacres that made him experience a great deal of guilt over his actions. (Weapon H v1 #10) This culminated in a during a mission in Ujanka when a Roxxon pipeline was being sabotaged by local villagers after the runoffs were poisoning their wells. As a result, an Eaglestar team was dispatched to eliminate them with Clayton on the mission where he snapped and killed his own team. He was ultimately subdued with the field commanders furious at his actions and them deciding to sell his contract as a test subject to William Stryker. This saw him being delivered into the care of Doctor Alba who intended to use him as part of her Weapon H project. (Weapon X v3 #9) He was taken for experimentation by Weapon X as part of Dr. Alba's Batch H program where they intended to merge qualities of the Hulk and Wolverine to create a perfect supersoldier. The subject was different from the other test subjects of Weapon X as for one he was not recruited by the programs director and thus was not a 'true believer' in his cause. In addition, Doctor Alba left more of his brain than in other subjects, with the intention to better train and discipline him. (Totally Awesome Hulk v1 #21)

Later on, Weapon X began deploying their cyborgs against Mutants. This resulted in the new Hulk and a team led by Wolverine to investigate the matter. They came to locate Weapon X's central command the raided the facility. By this point, H-Alpha had 15 minutes left for incubation before he could be released. (Weapon X v3 #6) The release of H-Beta bought Dr. Alba enough time to finish H-Alpha's process, and she eventually released him. H-Alpha joined the brawl between H-Beta and the Hulk. Due to his programming to act as an apex predator, H-Alpha beheaded H-Beta. He then turned on his creators, which Alba theorized was because H-Alpha had enough of his original brain to resent the atrocities they did to him. Hulk held him back, and they continued fighting. Once the Weapon X staff had fled the scene, H-Alpha abruptly stopped fighting, and escaped by jumping away. (Totally Awesome Hulk v1 #22) In order to protect the family he barely remembered he had, Weapon H went from Eaglestar facility to Eaglestar facility wiping out every data about him they had so people like Stryker would not target them. (Weapon X v3 #11) In one of such facilities, Clay ended up being injected with a nanite strain capable of resetting his command settings by Dr. Alba who then commanded him to attack Stryker and his cyborgs. (Weapon X v3 #9) When Weapon H was commanded by Dr. Alba to kill the entire population of Phoenix to prove his perfection. (Weapon X v3 #10) The same group of mutants who raided the Weapon X central command with the Hulk, whom Weapon H had previously encountered and easily defeated. (Weapon X v3 #8) Wolverine would break him free from Dr. Alba's control thus prompting him to resume his mission of erasing any trace of his family to keep them safe. (Weapon X v3 #11)

Trying to stay off the radar, Clayton tried to pass as a Spanish worker, but he eventually lost control and transformed. Clayton attempted to stay away from civilians by hiding in the forest, but he found himself compelled to aid an archaeological expedition while keeping his distance after they were dropped without their rations case. When the expedition turned out to be a cover for the Roxxon Corporation to obtain a Wendigo, Clayton intervened and stopped the newly-created Ur-Wendigo from killing Dr. Ella Sterling, exposing himself to Roxxon by doing so. (Weapon H v1 #1) He tried to get Dr. Sterling to safety afterwards, but the Ur-Wendigo caught him mid-air and took a bite of him, growing larger than before. As he was about to be eaten whole by the Ur-Wendigo, Doctor Strange, who had been observing everything from the Sanctum Sanctorum, burst onto the scene and shoot some magic arrows at the monster, making it release Weapon H. Weapon H allowed himself to be eaten by the monster so he could use Doctor Strange's ax to kill it from within. (Weapon H v1 #2)

In the Olympic National Park in Washington, a bunch of Brood-infested wolves ran past some hikers as they hunted down Clay. After flashing back to a moment seven years ago to his honeymoon with Sonia, Clay arrived in Bellevue as he tried not to turn into Weapon H. It was then revealed that the Brood-Wolves were engineered by Roxxon under Dario Agger's orders as he instructed them to have the Brood-Wolves attack people. Clay used his claws to save prisoners on work release in Roseburg, Oregon from the Brood-Wolves. After slaying them, Clay turned into Weapon H to fight an Acanti and the Brood Drones that arrived. When Dario saw his fighting moves on the screen, a scientist stated that Weapon H somehow knew Krav Maga, jujitsu, and the Breakworld Death Punch, which Weapon H used to knock out the Acanti. Then Brood-Sky Sharks were unleashed as Weapon H started slaying them. Dario Agger had the scientist look up the database of the military organization that taught the moves that Weapon H had used on the Brood-infested creatures. Afterwards, Weapon H ripped a Brood-Human out of the Acanti as the Brood-Human stated that Roxxon only wanted to hire him. While stating that people who hired him to protect people actually want to kill people, Weapon H had the Brood-Human carry a message to Roxxon: to leave him alone. Clay was later seen flashing back to a moment with Sonia when Dario had the scientist initiate the spawn of a Man-Thing in the same forest. (Weapon H v1 #3)

He then discovered that Morgan le Fay had been deposed by Roxxon and had released the Skrullduggers to terrorise the population of Weirdworld. This led to Clayton believing that Dario Agger had wrongfully imprisoned le Fay which allowed the sorceress to enchant him into freeing her. (Weapon H v1 #10) Whilst mind controlled, le Fay sent him to attack any outsiders not native to Weirdworld with Clay’s comrades attempting to get him back to his senses. To defeat his enemies, Agger decided to activate a failsafe device in an experimental power source that consisted of drained mystical energy from Morgan le Fay. The device was rigged to explode thus removing not only le Fay but all of Dario’s other enemies as well. However, Weapon H managed to snap free from the mind control and journeyed back through the portal to Earth and kidnapped Agger in an effort to have him forcibly deactivate the bomb or risk dying as well. (Weapon H v1 #11)

Avengers

During the War of the Realms, the forces of the Dark Council invaded Earth looking to divide it amongst themselves. In this time, the worlds superpowered beings gathered to oppose them with Captain America sending out a call to Weapon H. He came to join Captain Marvel Carol Danvers and her force of War Avengers in repelling the army of Malekith the Accursed. (War of the Realms Strikeforce: The War Avengers v1 #1)

Afterwards, he remained in hiding with his mother-in-law where one day he returned home to find a number of his former Eaglestar comrades. They held her hostage with Clayton ready to kill them but they threatened Janice thus forcing Cortez to stand down. The head of the team then revealed that he and his comrades had been enhanced into Sym-Soldiers where they were bonded to Symbiotes with them being part of Weapon V which in turn was one of the Weapon Plus programs. They had acted to force Clayton to aid them against Cletus Kasady as the murderous serial killer was hunting down Symbiote hosts in order to claim the genetic codices that resided in their spines. This resulted in Carnage devastating a Weapon V lab with the surviving soldiers looking to stage a trap for Kasady as he was looking for codices to free the dark god Knull. Clayton reluctantly agreed and transformed to battle the supervillain though the Sym-Soldiers were perfectly willing to kill Weapon H alongside their target. This culminated in Clayton deciding to abandon the Weapon V Sym-Soldiers who were massacred by Carnage whilst Cortez rescued Janice and the two fleeing the scene. Overview

Personality and attributes

As an experiment of Dr. Alba, he was labelled as H-Alpha as part of Batch H. (Totally Awesome Hulk v1 #21) On account of his hybrid nature, he was sometimes referred to as Hulkverine. (Weapon X v3 #8)

Cortez came to be married with his wife being Sonia Sung. (Weapon X v3 #8)

Powers and abilities

He became a trained soldier and was later an ex-military former Eaglestar contractor. (Weapon X v3 #9) It was noted that he was trained as a special operator for the Marine Corps. (Weapon H v1 #6) In addition, he had also worked in the U.S. Navy and trained as a SEAL prior to his life as a mercenary. (Weapon X v3 #10) Clayton was very skilled in hand-to-hand combat. This allowed him to change his gamma frequency to that of another gamma enhancile and thus gain their characteristics. As a result, he could suddenly developed red skin and wing similar to the Harpy incarnation of the Red She-Hulk. (Savage Avengers v2 #2) In another instance, he gained the traits of the Red Hulk and had the power to drain gamma radiation. (Savage Avengers v2 #3) Another time, he was able to develop the enhanced intellect of the Leader's gamma mutation. (Savage Avengers v2 #4) With enough gamma radiation, he could further alter his body into a menagerie of different gamma mutations thus gaining all their powers in one hybrid form. (Savage Avengers v2 #5)
