Biography
Leland Owlsley
At some point, he came to hire accountant George Grey for his business. Unknown to the man, the Owl had taken him on to serve as a fall guy in case the illegal activities of the business were ever uncovered. One day, the income tax people came to discover irregularities in the business where they came to accuse Grey of fraud. Confiding in the Owl, Grey was shocked to find out he was being framed by his employer leaving the despondent George seeing no way out beyond committing suicide. He would end up walking into traffic and being hit by a vehicle thus killing him in the process. The police investigated the matter and questioned him looking to find evidence to finally arrest the Owl but lacked any concrete proof of any illegal dealings. Confident in himself, the Owl came to agree to get legal representation where he thought to hire anyone he could find in the newspaper as he believed there was nothing that could prove his guilt. Ponting at a newspaper, he came to decide to have Nelson and Murdock represent him in the matter. Matt Murdock came to represent him where he wanted to meet the Owl the next day for the trial but his client never turned up. (Daredevil v1 #3)
The Owl's Gang rescued the Owl, and made Kerwin examine him. Kerwin designed a neurological pacemaker so that the Owl could survive. However, Daredevil and Spider-Man went to rescue Kerwin and fought and defeated the Owl. This caused him an anxiety stroke, breaking the pacemaker, and the Owl went into a coma. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #73) The Owl recovered and made the Tinkerer repair his braces. He also got a flying support module to compensate his legs. He then tried to launch a great crime wave, but Spider-Man and the Black Widow stopped him. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #98)
Afterwards, the Owl embarked on an ambitious plan to depose the Kingpin of Crime and take his place as the new crime lord of New York. He met with Doctor Octopus and try to convince him to form an alliance, but Octopus was not interested and they ended up fighting. Spider-Man interrupted the fight, and both of them ran away. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #73) Soon afterward, Octopus attacked the Owl at the Aerie and defeated him in a personal fight. He broke his claws and braces and threw him to a 20 feet fall. (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man v1 #75) Soon afterward, Octopus attacked the Owl at the Aerie and defeated him in a personal fight. He broke his claws and braces and threw him to a 20 feet fall. (Daredevil v1 #302) He formed a Gang of Four with Stilt-Man, Gladiator, and Copperhead in an attempt to assassinate and replace Kingpin. It turned out Copperhead was an undead demon that had manipulated the other members of the gang into forming so he could harvest souls. Owl, reaching a moral tipping point, seemingly sacrificed himself to save the soul of Spider-Man by attacking Copperhead and tackling him through his own demonic portal. (Daredevil/Spider-Man v1 #4)
Later, the Owl escaped prison and stole Deathlok from S.H.I.E.L.D. in hopes of selling him off to the highest bidder to other supervillains. Unfortunately, he did not ask permission of the newly-established 'kingpin of supervillains', The Hood, and was subsequently shot down by the villain. (New Avengers v1 #33) Presumably after his recovery from The Hood, The Owl and his gang appeared in New York City, months after Dr. Octopus had switched bodies with Spider-Man. The Owl battled with the new White Dragon over gang territory, just as Spider-Man showed up. Spider-Man defeated both The Owl and White Dragon while the remainder of their gangs were rounded up by the Goblin King. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #10)
He came to be one of a number of crime lords that were competing with Mister Negative for the Tablet of Life and Destiny in order to win a favor of Mayor Wilson Fisk. (Amazing Spider-Man v5 #59)
Whilst running drugs through Hell's Kitchen, Owl decided to eliminate his competitors in the Libris crime family and ordered a hit against Izzy Libris though this failed. As a result, he was abducted by Mayor Fisk who was angered at his edict of no inter-gang conflict occurring and intended for Owlsley to be sent away until his organization was brought into line. However, Leland refused as he felt Fisk had grown soft and was playing a bigger game which meant he could not be involved in criminal activities in the city. The Owl then killed the guards that abducted him and made his escape where he intended to keep on continuing his activities in defiance of Fisk. (Daredevil v6 #11)
