Goro Maki

Goro Maki was a freelance reporter who flew to Sollgel Island and parachuted from a plane in order to cover the story of the experiments being conducted there by Professor Kusumi and his team. Despite Kusumi's insistence that he leave and leave them to work in privacy, Goro refused to budge or even eat anything. Fujisaki suggested that they keep him on as their cook, and Kusumi agreed. Goro initially objected to this, until Fujisaki told him he'd have to swim home otherwise. Kusumi also promised to give Goro the exclusive publication rights for their climate conversion tests, so long as Goro swore not to publish anything until their work was completed, due to the Professor's fear of the technology falling into the wrong hands. During his stay on Sollgel, Goro had several encounters with the island's native giant praying mantises, which he dubbed the Kamacurases (Gimantises), and the giant spider Kumonga, as well as Godzilla and his son Minya. He also discovered that, unknown to the scientists, a girl named Saeko Matsumiya had been living on the island for several years following the death of her scientist father, Dr. Tadashi Matsumiya, although Kusumi and his men initially did not believe him until they spotted her near their base one night.

Heisei

Goro Maki was a reporter who investigated the wreck of the Yamata Maru, and was attacked by a mutated sea leech before being saved by Hiroshi Okumura. After his report on the incident was blocked by the Japanese government, Maki investigated possible ties to Godzilla, resulting to Dr. Hayashida's efforts to stop the giant monster.
