Caretaker is the name of several characters in the Marvel Universe.

Caretakers were established to keep watch over the solitary Spirits of Vengeance to try and ensure that their charges never learnt the truth of their nature. This meant that a Caretaker dealt in lies, half-truths and misdirection in an effort to hide the source of the Ghost Riders power namely that it came from God. (Ghost Rider v6 #31)

As such, he was one of a number of caretakers that watched over the wielders of the Ghost Rider. (Ghost Rider v6 #30)

A new threat emerged in the form of a traitorous angel seeking to overthrow God and claim Heaven for himself with this being Zadkiel. To accomplish his goal, Zadkiel had to enlist earthly subordinates to eliminate any who would threaten his mission. In a bitter act of betrayal, Zadkiel coerced Daniel Ketch to confront and destroy his former Caretaker. Ketch did not face his mentor alone, however, as he had brought help in the form of some of his old enemies: Blackout, Doghead, Death Ninja and the Orb. Caretaker though would not go down without a fight but came to be overwhelmed by the numbers brought against him. Eventually, he was taken down with Blackout striking the fatal blow, but before he left this world, he met his granddaughter, Sara, and told her she was to replace him. For his loyal service on Earth, Caretaker's soul went to Heaven, but a Heaven ruled by Zadkiel meant his soul was torn to pieces and scattered to the winds on arrival. (Ghost Rider v6 #26)

Sara was the granddaughter of the Caretaker. Shortly after she was born she was left in the care of the Sisters of the Holy Sepulcher, an order of nuns that trained to be the soldiers of God. When she was older she decided it was time to learn of her family legacy. (Ghost Rider v6 #26) As a result, she became the last guardian of 6,000 years worth of secrets. (Ghost Rider v6 #31)

Sara later returned when Johnny Blaze had become the king of Hell where she noted that he had become corrupted by this power. As a result, she recruited the despondent Danny Ketch to help save his half-brother. She opened a portal into Limbo so that Ketch could seek out the sorcerer Belasco and claim his warrior Necrosis who was the only one able to kill a Ghost Rider. (Ghost Rider v9 #4)

When she arrived agents of Zadkiel had attacked the house and had set it on fire. Before the fire had destroyed the library of the past riders, she was able to absorb the knowledge of the library. Taking a few items from the Caretakers store and changing out of her habit into more street clothes, she decided to help the Ghost Rider Johnathan Blaze to stop Zadkiel. (Ghost Rider v6 #27)

Sara helped the Ghost Riders Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch in the fight against him after finding out that the Deacon had murdered all of her sisters at the Sacred Convent of the Sisters of the Holy Sepulcher, and she felt a need for vengeance. (Ghost Rider v6 #33)

Restraining her Anton revealed that he planned to invade Heaven with an army of demons he would summon from the portal in Master Pandemonium's chest. Recovering from the experience after disappearing briefly in a flash of light, she walked in on the Deacon before he killed the last of the Gun Nuns. (Ghost Riders: Heaven on Fire v1 #5) The two fight and Sara slashed his back, severing his spine and crippling him. He ordered her to kill him but she refused, knelt down and prayed. After sending the Deacon to a hospital alongside the Orb, she followed both Ghost Riders off on a new adventure, her own motorcycle alongside theirs. (Ghost Riders: Heaven on Fire v1 #6)

Saving Danny after Johnny, the newly crowned king of Hell, removed his Spirit of Vengeance and threw him off of the Brooklyn Bridge, Caretaker tried to get him to agree to save his brother. Though he initially refused out of anger and a desire to be free of the Ghost Rider legacy, eventually he did agree to do so. (Ghost Rider v9 #3) She opened a portal to send him to Belasco's realm of Limbo in order to retrieve Necrosis in order to help fight back against the Hell-empowered Ghost Rider. (Ghost Rider v9 #4) When Danny found out that she had known that the spirit would turn him into a host and was willing to use him in order to stop Johnny, he abandoned her, taking the Spirit with him. (Spirits of Ghost Rider: Mother of Demons v1 #1)

Notes

• The Caretaker was created by Howard Mackie and Andy Kubert where it made its first appearance in Ghost Rider v3 #28 (August, 1992).

In other media

Television

• In Helstrom, the Caretaker appeared in the setting of the live-action Hulu television series where he was portrayed by actor Robert Wisdom. This version was an African-American member of the Blood named Henry who displayed a more pleasant personality than his comics counterpart and was especially friendly towards Louise Hastings, the head of the Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health.

Films

• In Ghost Rider, the Caretaker was merged with aspects of Carter Slade in the setting of the live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Sam Elliott.

Video games

• In Marvel's Midnight Suns, the Sister Sara Caretaker appeared in the setting of the video game where she was voiced by actress Vanessa Marshall.
