Air-Walker is a male robotic alien comic character that features in Marvel Comics.

Biography

Gabriel was an extraterrestrial male who was originally an inhabitant of the planet Xandar. By adulthood, he came to join the space-service where he became a highly distinguished commander with far-flung exploits. He came to command a Xandarian explorer-ship dispatched into the fringes of the Andromeda Galaxy. During this mission, his second-in-command was a fellow Xandarian by the name of Pyreus where one day they came upon a gargantuan spherical craft. This actually belonged to the World Devourer Galactus who abducted Gabriel with his ship moving into hyperspace. Galactus had desired a new Herald to help him find new worlds to consume and decided on Gabriel fulfilling that role. At first, he protested and wanted to be returned to his crew but eventually he relented with him being gifted with the Power Cosmic. In that time, he came to lead his master to many worlds to consume and though guilty at first he formed a close kinship with Galactus. During one scouting mission, he was fatally injured by the Ovoids though Galactus could still find a small spark of him still surviving and to prevent Gabriel dying he transferred his mind into a mechanical body. Thus, he came to live again which helped ease the loss that Galactus felt in his being. Despite the kinship, he came to send Air-Walker to Earth where he was charged with the task of recovering the former Herald that was the Silver Surfer. (Thor v1 #306)

During the Annihilation War, the Air-Walker was targeted by the Seekers of Annihilus who was the master of the Negative Zone. The Annihilation Wave from that realm was invading the positive-matter reality and part of their goal was claiming the Power Cosmic for their master. Thus, Ravenous was dispatched alongside his hunters and the specially bred curs with hunting down the Heralds of Galactus. Gabriel was their first prey when he investigated the destruction of his homeworld of Xandar. The Air-Walkers mechanical nature was something that the Seekers did not desire though they still managed to ambush him when the Silver Surfer arrived to aid his fellow Herald. They managed to escape but the damage to Gabriel's body was too severe and the Surfer destroyed his form to prevent the Seekers from claiming it. (Annihilation: Silver Surfer v1 #1)

The Xandarian was noted for his wanderlust who was more at home in deep space. (Thor v1 #306)

Originally, he protested at the actions of his master Galactus and felt guilt at the worlds he was forced to give to the World Devourer. However, in time, came to understand the tragedy of Galactus as a being who was a slave to his endless hunger. This touched Gabriel deeply and he came to speak to his master with the two forming a companionship that the World Devourer came to crave as they each felt a kindred spirit in the other. It was this reason that when Air-Walker was slain that Galactus used his knowledge to help ensure that Gabriel lived in a mechanical form after the death of his biological body. (Thor v1 #306)

Powers and abilities

With his abilities, he could fly in the sky and into deep space without the need for life support equipment. On his back were fiery wings which he referred to as his Cape of Destiny which he claimed to be the source of his life and strength. Gabriel could emit powerful bursts of wind on a planet and fire powerful energy blasts from his hands. (Fantastic Four v1 #121)

He was armed with a weapon known as the Bow of Gabriel that was a tool he used to prepare worlds for consumption by the World Devourer. A single arrow was shot into the planet's core that unleashed a terraforming wave known as the Dark Tide which transformed the world's minerals. The process made the minerals more nutritious for Galactus and also warped the natives to become more docile so that they willingly accepted their fate as their world was devoured. (Black Order v1 #2) The Air-Walker also had in his possession the trumpet of Gabriel which he could manifest at any moment and was used to summon forth his master Galactus. (Fantastic Four v1 #121)
