History

The Ultramarine Corps were created by the U.S. as a government-sponsored group of superhumans to rival the more independent Justice League. (DC One Million v1 #2)

A cover story was made stating that early in the year the United States military's mass teleport unit imploded into a higher dimensional space. The fake origin claimed that four volunteers went through Threshold Station into a completely new reality where they gained their powers. The President later had General Eiling give a public unveiling of the Ultramarine Corps to the press. (JLA v1 #24)

They consisted of a quartet of super-powered military operative specialists created by General Wade Eiling as part of his maddened plan for immortality and world conquest. All four- Warmaker One, Pulse-8, 4-D and Flow- were given a synthetic metagene that granted them powers, but threatened to kill them in a short time. Like he had with Captain Atom and Major Force previously, Eiling concocted a false origin and touted them as a new line of defense against international metahuman threats.

The Ultramarines were used to retrieve the body of the Shaggy Man, as well as battling the Justice League of America, perceiving them (under orders) as a threat to the United States. (JLA v1 #24) After realizing that their metagene was killing them, and that Eiling had lied, they allied with the JLA to capture the General- only to find he was now in the Shaggy Man's body. After helping to defeat their former commander, the Ultramarines were cured and went on to form the independent state of Superbia above the ruins of Montevideo. (JLA v1 #25)

Joining with other international heroes, including former members of the Global Guardians, they formed the International Ultramarine Corps. They assisted other superheroes in combatting the chaos caused by Mageddon.

Members of the Ultramarines attempt to take down a terrorist incident orchestrated by Gorilla Grodd, who uses the distraction to take over their floating fortress, Superbia. The members of the team flee and regroup, only to find that Pulse 8 has been taken control of by a Sheeda spine-rider. The rest of the team falls to the Sheeda soon after, and are directed by them to act as weapons for Grodd and Neh-Buh-Loh. They fight the JLA and attack civilians before they are freed of the mind-control when Neh-Buh-Loh retreats. The team agrees to enter the infant universe Qwewq, and act as superheroes in a world without them. They successfully plant a flaw in Qwewq.

During the Final Crisis, the Ultramarine Corps were last seen fending off an attack by Darkseid's forces on Superbia, which soon fell from the sky and the status of the group remains unknown. (Final Crisis v1 #4)

Overview

In appearance, the Ultramarine Corps were a specialist team of superpowered beings created by the U.S. military as a only line of effective defense against invasion. (DC One Million v1 #2) Their original incarnation was considered a super-military and held as being 'tomorrow's army today'. They were said to be a new kind of army better suited to the challenges and dangers of the coming millennium. Unlike the Justice League, the Ultramarines stated objective was originally national with them fixated on U.S. interests in an increasingly dangerous world. (JLA v1 #24)

Geneticists were responsible for synthesising Metagene DNA to engineer supersoldiers and turn the Ultramarines into superhumans. This variant though was lethal as the subjects powers overloaded their nervous systems thus killing them in the span of weeks. (JLA v1 #25) They were held as a force of highly trained and disciplined Metahumans that served America's interests in an increasingly dangerous world. (JLA v1 #24)
