History

Origin

Sinestro Corps War in Green Lantern v4 #21.

The Corps formed an alliance with numerous other organizations with the intention of destroying the Green Lantern Corps. This included the Children of the White Lobe and the Manhunters.

Under the patronage of the Anti-Monitor, the Yellow Lanterns gathered as an army to serve their 'guardian of fear' with them being led by Sinestro. This saw them launching a surprise attack against Oa where they killed many members of the Green Lantern Corps though this onslaught was designed to mask them secretly freeing the Cyborg Superman Hank Henshaw and Superboy-Prime. A yellow Power Ring was also used to abduct Green Lantern Kyle Rayner who was then forcibly bonded with the Parallax fear entity with him along with the Cyborg Superman, Superboy-Prime and Sinestro becoming the heralds of the Anti-Monitor. Sinestro Corps War

Aftermath

After the crisis, the Sinestro Corps regrouped and settled on Korugar where they were supposed to protect the natives but instead they began to enslave them. Around this time, Sinestro had been chosen by a green Power Ring and forcibly made a Green Lantern. He was sent to ensure peace in his home sector only to find his people enslaved by his former followers. A Yellow Lantern discovered him with Thaal Sinestro killing the Corpsmen before going to Earth to meet his former protégé Hal Jordan who had been removed from the Green Lantern Corps. (Green Lantern v5 #1) Sinestro was actually pursued by a Yellow Lantern who had hoped to kill him in a bid to take over the Sinestro Corps but was killed by the Korugarian. It was then that Sinestro revealed that he had deputised Hal Jordan to assist him in freeing Korugar and apprehending his former followers among the Yellow Lanterns. (Green Lantern v5 #2) Thaal Sinestro had intended to sneak in and use his failsafe to deactivate the Central Battery thus leaving the Yellow Lanterns powerless. However, he broke cover after see one of the Korugarians nearly killed leading to him attacking the Yellow Lanterns whilst Jordan was sent to initiate the failsafe process. (Green Lantern v5 #3)

He contemplated his next action after contact with the New Gods and decided to lead his forces to protect Nok from the forces of New Genesis. Despite their counterattack, the New Gods managed to butcher many of the Yellow Lanterns though this did not worry Sinestro as he felt it was trimming the unworthy from his ranks. He ordered a full retreat allowing their allies to escape but left his weakest members behind as a rear guard where he detonated their Power Rings in order to deal damage to the New God General Bekka's forces. (Sinestro v1 #6)

At this point, an unknown enemy targeted the Green Lanterns with everyone that wore their power rings disappearing for the cosmos. In the void left by them, Sinestro positioned his Corps to take over as the new enforcers of order in the universe. (Sinestro v1 #13)

After the defeat of the Paling, Sinestro himself had been weakened and he had passed on leadership of his Corps to his daughter Soranik Natu. She removed the rings from the newly recruited members of Earth and left behind Arkillo along with Saint Walker as the guardian of Sector 2814 after which she took the Sinestro Corps back into space. (Sinestro v1 #21) With their position secure, Warworld was positioned in Sector 0 at the sit of the remains of Oa. Sinestro merged once more with the Parallax entity after his body had grown old and withered from his previous struggles. He then mandated that his Corps ensure order was maintained by instilling fear across the universe. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #1)

Overview

Sinestro assembles his Corps.

The Sinestro Corps was similar to the Green Lantern Corps but instead of using willpower as their focus of their energy, they made use of fear.

They believed in the use of fear as a means of promoting order in the universe. (Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special v1 #1)

Thus, the Corps chose those individuals who had the capacity to instill fear in the hearts of others. When chosen, the ring takes them to the Anti-Matter Universe world of Qward where they are encased in a fear lodge; a shell that covers their entire body leaving them trapped in darkness. In this state, they are required to face their own fears in order to activate their power ring thus giving them the means to exit the fear lodge. However, not all manage to pass this process with some dying of starvation or thirst whilst others are driven mad by their fears and thus die within the fear lodge. But those that do manage to spark their power ring are freed and taken to Lyssaa Drak; the Keeper of the Book of Parallax who tells them tales of the Sinestro Corps most evil members.

The oath of the Sinestro Corps was:

"In blackest day, in brightest night,"
"Beware your fears made into light"
"Let those who try to stop what's right,"
"Burn like my power... Sinestro's might!"

It was said that the Sinestro Corps had been created with a code of conduct made by the founder of their organization. (Green Lantern v5 #2) Under the Corps, the death of any member meant the other Corpsmen sought the death of their killer. They believed under their law that a life was exchanged for a life. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #25)

One group within the Sinestro Corps was its Science Division tasked with study, research and production of new technology. (Sinestro v1 #15) A secret police force called the Black Circle were also created with the purpose of using lethal force in finding threats within their ranks and eliminating them. (Sinestro v1 #22)

The Central Battery could be triggered into active search status whereby it began to seek out new recruits for the Corps. (Green Lantern v5 #3)

After constructing it, Sinestro built a failsafe into his Central Power Battery whereby a Green Lantern Power Battery placed inside of it would shut it down. If it detected danger, it could engage a disintegration process whereby it disintegrated any threats inside of it. (Green Lantern v5 #3) He could also remotely self-destruct protocol to certain Yellow Lantern rings causing them to detonate and deal damage to enemies. (Sinestro v1 #6)
