Biography

Meliodas (Japanese: メリオダス, Hepburn: Meriodasu) was a male member of the Demon Clan where he was the son of the Demon King and the brother of Zeldris.

In the last days of the war, he and Elizabeth came to be confronted by their respective parents namely the Demon King and the Supreme Deity. Despite their enmity, they two shared a mutual dissatisfaction over their children's defiance at their authority and put aside their rivalry in order to punish the pair. Meliodas battled his father but was easily overpowered by the Demon King with Elizabeth facing a similar situation against the Supreme Deity. The two were then given a punishment that was worse than death with the Supreme Deity cursing Meliodas with immortality causing him to resurrect everytime he died but at the cost of some of his emotions being consumed. Meanwhile, the Demon King cursed Elizabeth with a perpetual cycle of reincarnation whereby she would die and be reborn in a new body with no memories of her past until a set time where her power would return and she would die again. This prevented the pair from ever finding love together with Meliodas being forced to see her die over and over. Once cast, Meliodas was unconscious where he came to miss the end of the Holy War and when he awoke he found the conflict over along with the dead body of Elizabeth. Meliodas then came to mourn her and was unaware of the curses placed on the pair leading to him wandering the ruined lands of Britannia. This was until one day he found a human girl that resemble Elizabeth and spent time with her as the two became close overtime. Eventually, she gained her powers and eventually her memories whereupon she told Meliodas of the curse that had been cast on them. She then made Meliodas promise her that he would do whatever it took to break the curse placed on them whereupon this incarnation of her died. Since that time, Meliodas had lived to see a new incarnation of Elizabeth born whilst the curse of his father made sure that he saw them die before his eyes each time.

For the next 3,000 years, he wandered until he came to enter into the employ of the Holy Knights of the kingdom of Danafor. Around 27 years ago, he was noted to have had a brief encounter with Merlin where he asked her for a way of breaking the curse on him. She suggested freeing the Ten Commandments in order to use the power of Zeldris but Meliodas refused as he felt that this would be too dangerous for the world and that his brother would never agree to help him.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Meliodas was a short male who was seemingly human with messy blond hair and emerald eyes along with a muscular body. Despite his status and seeming youth, he was actually more older with him being over 3,000 years old. Despite this being the case, his appearance often made strangers mistake him for a child and underestimate him. Due to his short stature, he often confused for being a child. He was once known as Meliodas the Love (慈愛のメリオダス, Jiai no Meriodasu) when he headed the Ten Commandments. Among the Seven Deadly Sins, he was known as the Dragon Sin of Wrath'.

As a result of his curse, he tended to lose memories and emotions every time he was killed.

He was the son of the Demon King(魔神王) who was the progenitor and leader of the Demon Clan. Meliodas also had a brother who greatly resembled him and was named Zeldris.

As a fighter, he was shown to be a skilled fighter and warrior where he used his fighting techniques to their full potential. With his sword, he could create clones that were used as distractions and part of feints allowing him to deal a fatal blow to an enemy.

Powers and abilities

Though human in appearance, Meliodas was a member of the Demon race and thus gained all the superhuman abilities of their people. Despite his appearance, he was noted for being thousands of years old. He had incredible regenerative powers whereby his shadowy based form could re-attach severed limbs. All demons were noted to possess seven hearts and the destruction of all of them meant his death. However, a curse from the Demon King made Meliodas immortal and he eventually came back to life as a result.

His inherent power was known as Full Counter (全反撃フルカウンター Furukauntā) that had the ability to reflect a powerful attack back at his attacker. Thus, it was a skill that was particularly effective against more powerful enemies as it made their attack even more powerful when it was reflected back at them. However, this ability could only act in response to an attack and he could not initiate the ability himself. Furthermore, he had to be aware of the attack and time his Full Counter at the correct moments. Thus, hidden attacks or strikes from his blindside could not be countered by this ability.

Another technique used by him was Hellblaze (獄炎ヘルブレイズ Herubureizu; literally meaning "Hellfire") which allowed him to produce black flames. These flames were powerful enough to nullify an immortal's healing ability and leaving wounds on their bodies.

Meliodas was capable of reaching a more powerful state called Assault Mode (殲滅状態アサルトモード, Asaruto Mōdo) whereby he accessed his full demonic powers. According to Melascula, back in the days when Meliodas was leader of the Ten Commandments even they feared him when he entered into this state. When entering this mode, he temporarily was robbed of his feelings and emotions thus causing him to his original state as a demon.

He came to wield a Sacred Treasure known as Demon Sword Lostvayne (魔剣 ロストヴェイン, Maken Rosutovein) that was a demon-splitting sword. The sword had a special ability known as Jitsuzō Bunshin (実像分身じつぞうぶんしん literally meaning "Physical Clone") that allowed Meliodas to create up to four clones of himself. Each clone though retained only a fraction of the power of the original where a single clone had half the power of the original. Meanwhile, further clones led to the power level being halved among each of them. It was this ability that made it highly compatible with his Full Counter ability and allowed him to use it much more dangerously.

Using his sword, he could perform a 'Kami Chigiri (神かみ千斬ちぎり Kami Chigiri; literally meaning "Thousand Divine Slayer") whereby he cuts his opponent with a total of a thousand times in an instant.

When serving his father the Demon King, he was the original wielder of the Commandment of Love (慈じ愛あい, Jiai), which was bestowed upon him by the Demon King. Its power meant that those that stood before him with hatred in their hearts being rendered powerless to harm or inflict damage on others. To ally with the Goddess clan, he had to relinquish this power which was taken back and given to another.

Originally, he came to serve the Demon Clan and even joined the ranks of their elite force the Ten Commandments (十戒, Jikkai) where he served as their leader. After defecting, he joined the ranks of Stigma (光の聖痕スティグマ Sutiguma) where he was regarded as a traitor by his people as a result. Thousands of years later, he was one of the founders of the legendary order of knights that were known as the Seven Deadly Sins (七つの大罪, Nanatsu no Taizai).

The Supreme Deity came to curse him with immortality as punishment for him turning against his people and for falling in love with a member of the Goddess race. This meant he was kept eternally young and at the age the curse was made where he simply resurrected every time he was killed. This was to work in conjunction with a similar curse made on Elizabeth whereby she would constantly die and be reincarnated with Meliodas forced to see his love always dying as a result. When dying, it was shown that his father the Demon King was able to speak to him.
