Biography

Origin

Wielders of the Quirk One For All.

Izuku Midoriya (Japanese: 緑谷 出久, Hepburn: Midoriya Izuku) was a male child born to Inko Midoriya and Hisashi Midoriya where he lived in Japan in a time when Quirks developed among humanity giving 80% of mankind some form of superpower. Thus, an age of superheroes emerged which in turn saw the rise of people abusing their powers to become supervillains. He lived in the neighbourhood of another boy named Katsuki Bakugo with the two becoming friends and Midoriya giving him the nickname of Kaachan. The two of them were also great fans of the Number 1 hero that was All Might who appeared on television with Midoriya regularly watching the hero's exploits. Bakugo became the popular child in the circle of friends with Midoriya looking up to him and believing him capable of many great things. Around this time, Bakugo's response towards Midoriya began to change as he started looking down at him for being weak and started giving him the nickname of Deku as a sign of mockery. Their relationship then changed again when Bakugo started developing his explosive Quirk with everyone believing him to be capable of great things with his power. One day, Izuku went to the doctor with his mother to see when his Quirk would develop but was informed that Midoriya was among those humans that were Quirkless which meant that he would never get any powers. This resulted in Midoriya being looked down upon by people at his school and Bakugo treating him with even more ridicule though Izuku still stayed in his company.

On one occasion, he found Bakugo and his friends bullying another child with Midoriya jumping in to stop him but they instead beat him up.

Entrance Exam

Izuku is attending class at Aldera Junior High while his teacher announces that all students will graduate this year. Katsuki replies that he is not like the other class members, calling them all fodder and that only he is destined to attend U.A., and he alone will surpass All Might. Once his teacher announces that Izuku is attempting to get into U.A. as well, Katsuki is shocked and furious. He berates Izuku and uses his Explosion Quirk to scare him, claiming that someone who is Quirkless cannot get into U.A. and cannot do anything at all.

Thus, it was 10 years later when he came upon a chance encounter with his hero All-Might. Whilst travelling by a tunnel, he was attacked by a villain made of sludge who wanted to use Midoriya as a skin-suit to escape detection. This saw him restrained as the villain sought to enter his body which would have killed him. However, All-Might arrived on the scene and used his Texas Smash to knock aside the villain who he kept contained in a bottle. A grateful Midoriya was grateful to All-Might and overwhelmed at meeting his idol. All-Might though was prepared to leave for another task but a young Midoriya refused to let him go and wanted to ask him questions. This led to All-Might unintentionally bringing the boy to a rooftop where he had no choice but to reveal his secret namely that he could only remain in his powered-up form for short periods of time. Izuku though came to ask that if someone who was Quirkless could become a hero with All-Might replying that this was impossible and that one should have a more realistic. He told Midoriya to consider becoming a police officer before departing leaving Izuku struggling to come to terms with his dream seemingly being shattered. Whilst walking, he came to find that the sludge villain that fought All-Might had escaped and attacked Bakugo where he took him hostage. Without thinking, Midoriya rushed in to save Bakugo and his actions inspired All-Might into action where he helped finish off the villain.

Yoshinori then decided that he wanted Midoriya to be his successor and revealed the true nature of his Quirk that was One For All which had been passed down from one hero to the next.

After 10 months of intense training, the day of the entrance exam arrives. At six o'clock in the morning, at the last possible second, Izuku moves the final piece of garbage of the entire beach. All Might is amazed as Izuku cleaned the whole beach and commends him as he cuts off a piece of his hair and gives it to Izuku, who is surprised he has to eat it, receiving his first dose, a very small piece of One For All. However, because the entrance exam is so close, Izuku must hurry to the school without getting used to the power. Izuku arrives at U.A. for the U.A. Entrance Exam, excited that he will be able to have a chance at becoming a hero. As he runs forward and trips, Izuku is saved by a girl's Quirk. The girl says she is nervous and asks if he is as well, to which he replies with a nod. The girl wishes him good luck while Izuku stands there awestruck, having talked to a girl for the first time in his life, even though he actually did not talk to her. Later, during Present Mic's presentation of the exam, Izuku gets called out by Tenya Ida for his endless mumbling, which he considers improper behavior. As the practical exam is about to start, Izuku gets intimidated by Tenya once again, this time for acting suspicious towards the girl he met before. Tenya berates Izuku which garners attention from the applicants who mumble to themselves how Izuku resembled a failure for his behavior. During the practical test, Izuku tries to destroy a 1-point robot, but finds himself too afraid to even move. Yuga Aoyama appears and destroys the robot. Izuku realizes that he is running out of time. Suddenly, a huge 0-point robot appears and begins destroying the area. Izuku tried to run away but then he sees the same girl who helped him before on the ground about to be attacked by the 0-point robot. Seeing her in danger, Izuku mustered up the courage to fight the robot and for the first time, uses One For All and attacks the huge robot with a devastating punch which completely destroys it and saves the life of the girl, while shocking everyone else with his feat. However, Izuku's bones immediately break due to having never used it before and begins falling. He tries to use Detroit Smash to land safely, but before he could activate it, the girl, whose life Izuku saved, uses her Quirk to allow him to land safely. The practical test is declared over, much to Izuku's sadness as he did not get a single point before he passes out from exhaustion. While unconscious, Izuku is called amazing for taking down the giant robot by his peers who wonder if he was intentionally looking weak, with only Tenya noting how Izuku selflessly protected the girl. Luckily for Izuku, Recovery Girl then heals his heavy injuries almost instantly. One week later, Izuku receives a letter that will determine whether he was accepted into U.A. or not. Izuku opens the letter in his room and a screen with All Might on it appears. He apologizes for not contacting Izuku earlier and informs him that he will be working as a teacher at U.A. All Might tells him that he did fine on the written test, but that he scored zero points during the practical test. Izuku accepted this and prematurely assumed he failed. However, All Might tells him that because of his heroic actions during the practical test, he earned 60 rescue points from teachers, meaning he has passed and therefore being accepted into U.A., much to Izuku's joy and happiness.

Quirk Apprehension Test

Now a student of U.A., Izuku talked with his mother before leaving home to his first day at the high school. As he arrives at Class 1-A, Izuku hopes not to see either Katsuki or Tenya again, as he enters the classroom. He finds his fears realized as he witnesses both Katsuki and Tenya arguing with each other, much to his frustration. Tenya approaches Izuku apologizing for his treatment and congratulates him on his feat during the Entrance Exam. Right after, Ochaco arrives at the classroom, with her cheerfulness embarrassing Izuku. While observing the scene, Katsuki recollects about a skirmish he had with Izuku about the results of the U.A. Entrance Exam, with the latter managing to show courage against his longtime bully after being threatened. This is followed by the homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa, coming into the classroom and explaining to the students about the Quirk Apprehension Test that they must go through. Shota further explains that whoever gets last place in the test will be expelled from U.A. High, putting massive pressure on Izuku. The students are tested on the power and use of their Quirks through several exercises under Shota's observation, but because of his lack of control over One For All, Izuku is unable to use it in most of the trials, which leads to him performing below the standards set by his classmates. When the time comes for the ball pitch trial, Izuku, left with no choice, tries to throw a ball as far as he can using One For All, but Shota stops him by erasing the Quirk. Izuku recognizes him by his goggles and powers as the hero Eraser Head. Shota tells the student that, with a Quirk like One For All, Izuku will be nothing but a burden by putting himself in danger several times, and that if he does not find a way to prevent One For All from massively crippling his own body, Izuku's future as a hero will be put in jeopardy. Shota then allows Izuku a second chance for the pitch trial. Keeping Shota's words in mind, Izuku powers up only the end of one of his fingers and launches the ball at a considerable distance. He shocks his class with this display as he tells his teacher he is still standing as Shota is impressed with his feat. Dumbfounded by this new development, an angry Katsuki menacingly rushes towards a nervous Izuku in order to question him about his sudden Quirk, but Shota stops him with his Capturing Weapon before a conflict can start. Izuku, because of his broken finger, underperforms through the remaining tests, eventually getting last place. However, after showing the results of the test, Shota reveals that he lied about the expelling in order to motivate the students to give their all, calling it a logical ruse, much to Izuku's shock. While Shota is leaving, he sees All Might, who tells Shota that he knows that he was actually planning to expel last place from U.A. All Might then concludes that Shota sees the same potential in Izuku that All Might sees. Shota shrugs off All Might's words and says that the chance of Izuku becoming a great hero is higher than zero, and that he does not see anything more than that, claiming to expel Izuku if he sees his chance ever fall below that mark. At the end of the day, Izuku is joined by Ochaco and Tenya, with the newly formed trio walking back home together, where Ochaco tells Izuku that his insulting nickname of Deku, given by Katsuki, sounds like the Japanese word for "you can do it," causing him to adopt the nickname, to Tenya's surprise. Izuku explained his views of his name have just changed.

Battle Trial

As the Heroics class starts, All Might tells all students to wear their hero costumes and head to Ground Beta. Izuku reminisces about the time he had to order a costume of his own. It turned out that Izuku's mother had made the costume herself by hand after looking through some of her son's annotations, feeling guilt for previously not believing that Izuku could become a hero and promising to always cheer for him from now on. Wearing said costume proudly, Izuku stepped into the training field. Izuku gets teamed up with Ochaco and is tasked to stop a team composed of Katsuki and Tenya from blowing up a fake nuclear bomb. They successfully infiltrate the building and look around the corners to see if anyone was coming, where Katsuki ambushes them. Izuku manages to save Ochaco from Katsuki's attack, but half of his mask is burned off in the process. As Katsuki is about to attack him again, Izuku intercepts him, grabs his right arm, and throws him to the ground, knowing that he would use his right arm to attack. Izuku tells the surprised Katsuki that he memorized his moves, as the same notebook Katsuki blew up and threw away in the past contained notes of heroes he has analyzed which include him. Izuku announces that he is no longer the "Deku" who was a loser, but the "Deku" whose vibe is never giving up, much to Katsuki's fury. Izuku tells Ochaco to go on ahead while he fights Katsuki who tries to attack him again. Having predicted that, Izuku evades and manages to grab Katsuki's leg with the Capture Tapes, but Katsuki breaks free using an Explosion. Knowing he is at a disadvantage, Izuku retreats in order to think of a plan and contacts Ochaco to learn about her location for the strategy. Katsuki searches for Izuku, angrily voicing that Izuku was intentionally hiding his Quirk from him. Eventually, Katsuki finds him and attacks Izuku with a great empowered Explosion move provided by his Grenadier Bracers. Izuku survives and calls Katsuki insane for doing that, but a seething Katsuki demands that Izuku use his Quirk. Izuku and Katsuki continue their fight, with Katsuki overpowering him, although Izuku manages to hold his own. Izuku concludes that Katsuki is stronger than he is. Izuku decides to use his Quirk and informs Ochaco to grab onto something. Instead of hitting Katsuki, Izuku aims his Detroit Smash into the ceiling, destroying the ground of every floor above them, including the one Ochaco and Tenya are on, but Izuku is forced to take the full brunt of Katsuki's Explosion. Although Izuku was unable to defeat Katsuki, it did distract Tenya long enough for Ochaco to grab the fake Nuclear Bomb, allowing both Izuku and Ochaco to win. Izuku is then taken away on a stretcher to have his wound attended to by Recovery Girl. After spending most of the day having his wounds healed, Izuku returns to his classroom. As he enters, Izuku is commended by many of his classmates for his performance during the battle trial. Ochaco asks him if he is alright, to which he replies that he is fine. Izuku then came to ask about the location of Katsuki. Although many of his classmates try to stop him, Izuku goes to find Katsuki. After Izuku finds him leaving school, Katsuki accuses him of coming to gloat. Izuku instead tells him his secret: that he obtained his Quirk from someone else in order to convince him that he had not been deceiving him but the latter does not believe it and swore to defeat him.

U.S.J.

Izuku was confronted by a reporter from the media, asking him questions about All Might, but Izuku makes an excuse to escape from the reporter. In class, Shota Aizawa makes a remark about Izuku's performance in the battle trial and encourages him to work harder. Afterwards, Izuku is elected as Class President after the class votes, much to his shock. In the lunch room, Izuku is unsure if he is the right one for the task, but Tenya assures Izuku that he is as he voted for him. Izuku then learns that Tenya is from a prestigious family of super heroes and that Tenya is the brother of Ingenium. As they continue talking, the siren goes off and everyone begins evacuating. After Tenya stops the chaotic evacuation, Izuku returns to class where he decides to step down as Class President and give the position to Tenya, deeming him more worthy of the position than him which is well received by everyone. In a flashback, Izuku is seen speaking to All Might telling him that he revealed to Katsuki about the secret of the One For All Quirk. However, All Might is not angry about it since Katsuki interpreted it as nonsense and tells Izuku to continue keeping the secret to himself and no one else. In the present, Izuku changes into his gym clothes in preparation for the rescue trial. On the way to the U.S.J., Tsuyu compares Izuku's Quirk to All Might's, which worries him although Eijiro Kirishima dismisses Tsuyu's claim since Izuku's Quirk hurts him unlike All Might's Quirk. Izuku then watches as the rest of Class 1-A make fun of Katsuki, which contrasts to their time in Junior High. They soon arrive at the U.S.J. and listen to Thirteen's speech. Izuku applauds Thirteen.

Suddenly, actual villains soon attack the U.S.J., which shocks Izuku. Shota goes to hold off the villains though Izuku tried to warn him that he could not but is amazed to see his teacher hold his own against the villains. Tenya then gets his attention by telling him to evacuate with his class. However, he is suddenly warped away by Kurogiri to the flood area of the Ultimate Space and Jams. Sent to the shipwreck zone, Izuku falls in the water where he was about to be attacked by a shark-like villain who prepared to devour him, but Tsuyu Asui saves him and throws him onto a boat along with Minoru. Izuku thanks her for saving him. Izuku then wonders about the villains' goal and then decides that their goal now is to fight. Izuku says that Tsuyu was teleported to an area that allows her to be at full strength thanks to her Frog Quirk, and then deduces that the villains do not know what their Quirks are. He then says that although the villains beat them in sheer numbers and experience, the one advantage they do have is the element of surprise. Izuku concocts a plan to defeat the villains and escape, and after telling Tsuyu and Minoru, Izuku uses Delaware Smash on the water while Minoru throws his sticky substance. The spread out water converges in the center along with Minoru's sticky substance, causing all the villains in the water to be stuck together by Minoru's Quirk. Izuku then escapes along with Minoru and Tsuyu, with Tsuyu saying that he was impressive. After that Izuku rambles that could have been dangerous, Tsuyu cuts him off and he says that their priority is to call for help, that they can take the waterside to the exit, but after remembering that Shota is at the central plaza fighting a large group of villains, Izuku decides that they should head to the central plaza and try to be of some assistance to Shota. However, after reaching the central plaza, Izuku is horrified to see Shota's condition after he is defeated by a monstrous villain.

Izuku is surprised to hear Tomura Shigaraki announce that they are retreating and wonders why they came for nothing. However, this train of thought is quickly interrupted as Tomura attempts to disintegrate Tsuyu but Shota uses his last bit of strength to nullify Tomura's Quirk, saving his student. Izuku then uses the opening in an attempt to save Tsuyu by attacking Tomura. He uses smash on him, but this time, Izuku does not suffer from recoil. However, the attack was intercepted by Nomu, who is not fazed as Izuku realizes Nomu is the secret weapon against All Might. Nomu grabs Izuku's arm, but Tsuyu wraps her tongue around him. Suddenly, All Might appears, much to Izuku's happiness. Izuku is then rescued by All Might along with Minoru, Tsuyu and Shota. All Might tells the students to take Shota to safety while he faces the villain. After seeing All Might in a bad position, Izuku decides to help him, but he is nearly warped but Kurogiri though Katsuki's attack stops him. Izuku is then joined by Shoto and they hold down Kurogiri until Nomu attacks them to save the villain but All Might protects Katsuki even Kurogiri was freed. Izuku then watches the battle between All Might and Nomu and worries for him as he was the only person who knows about the latter's time limit. After Nomu's defeat, Tomura and Kurogiri attempt to finish off All Might, but Izuku intervenes their attempt by running in front of All Might to protect him. Izuku's intervention gives the Heroes enough time to reach the U.S.J., forcing Tomura and Kurogiri to stop their attempt. Tomura and Kurogiri have no choice retreat because of the arriving heroes and No.13's attack, Izuku is seen on the ground, crying, as he was unable to do anything to help. However, All Might tells him that is not the case; because if Izuku did not intervene, he would have been dead and thanks him for saving his life. Afterwards, Izuku is taken to U.A.'s infirmary to have his injuries attended to. They are visited by Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi, and at first, Izuku is scared by the fact that someone discovers the true appearance of All Might, but the hero reassures him by saying that he is his friend and that he already knows about One For All. Later that night, Izuku is released from Recovery Girl's infirmary with his wounds treated. He finds Ochaco and Tenya waiting for him outside the school and walks home with them.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Izuku Midoriya was a young male with green hair that was typically unkempt. To his friends, he was known by the nickname of Deku that was actually given to him by Bakugo and made as an insult as well as sign of mockery. He decided to adopt it as his nickname after meeting Uraraka who said that she liked it with Izuku deciding that it would become the name of a hero.

From 4 years old, he found some people having more power than others but he did not find that holding him back as it instead drove him to be better. A dream of Izuku's was to become a hero which he had since he was a child and wanted to begin a career in that track.

He believed that the world was not black and white but rather most things operated in shads of gray. Deku viewed events as being a blend of fear and anger which was why he felt that he needed to extend a helping hand.

Midoriya was a caring and emotional person who never hesitated to help or rescue someone in danger, even if he knows that he might not be strong or qualified enough to do it. Often, he does this on instinct, taking a more careless approach than the usual overthinking he goes through and putting himself in peril in order to protect someone. Izuku putting others' lives above his own can go to the extreme, to the point where he has little to no self-preservation. Katsuki speculates that the bullying Izuku received for being Quirkless made him internalize that his life has less worth. Izuku will routinely break his arms for the sake of others, even if it's not completely necessary, such as demanding Shoto to unlock his full potential by using his fire side. This can make Izuku somewhat short-sighted, as he continued to break his arms, despite warnings he could permanently paralyze them and cut his hero career short. Eventually, Izuku listened, adapting his battle style to not put so much strain on his body. However, when he was in particularly difficult situation then he was shown to pull back on old habits.

He had a strong fascination with heroes and is shown well-versed in their history, sometimes even surprising the heroes themselves with his vast knowledge.

Izuku externalized his observations through endless mumbling, a habit that either annoyed or creeped out his peers.

To Midoriya, his greatest hero and inspiration was All-Might where he knew everything about the public actions of the Symbol of Peace. He even decided to base his costume on All Might with ears that resembled the hairs on his head and a mask that resembled a smile.

Powers and abilities

Originally, Izuku Midoriya was a human born on Earth where he was among the rare few that lacked powers in that world. One of his greatest assets was his vast knowledge of fundamental hero skills and tactics. Izuku studied Pro Heroes for years and is able to apply that knowledge during crisis situations in a practical manner. Midoriya maintained a vast knowledge of fundamental hero skills and tactics. He kept his findings of various heroes and Quirk traits in his notebook.

Initially, Midoriya was among the rare few humans that were Quirkless in that he had no abilities and was an ordinary human. This changed when he met All Might and when the hero decided to pass his Quirk One For All (ワン・フォー・オール, Wan Fō Ōru) to a successor.

Upon training with All Might, Izuku inherited One For All from him and was granted the ability to harness a stockpile of powerful energy. He can move faster than the eye can see and take down an enormous villain bot in a single punch, but the physical backlash at the time prevented Izuku from being able to fight properly or compete with his peers on an even playing field. Even so, he still possessed impressive physical durability, and his drive allowed him to withstand the drawbacks of One For All for the most part. Typically, this resulted in scarring left behind on his wounded arms from the use of his powers. It was said that constant overuse of his Quirk could lead to further damage to his limbs which could result in him being unable to use those parts of his body in the future.

Under Gran Torino tutelage, Izuku acquired more control over One For All, leading to the creation of One For All: Full Cowl (ワン・フォー・オール フルカウル Wan Fō Ōru Furu Kauru?) that was a technique that would eventually become a key component of his fighting style. With Izuku gaining greatly enhanced maneuverability, strength, and a significant reduction in the physical backlash created when using his Quirk uncontrollably, he was able to drastically improve his overall fighting capabilities; his newly attained abilities garnered praise from Gran Torino, who noted that Izuku was on a higher level than he was compared to the Sports Festival.[9] This specific improvement enabled Izuku to compete more closely with his classmates in the physical aspects of the Hero Course and even allows him to fight properly against top villains like the Hero Killer: Stain, who had single-handedly bested various Pro Heroes.

Due to repeated injuries cause of his Quirk, Midoriya decided to adjust his costume to focus extra protection on his legs that he started to use further in combat. This worked in a combination with his Quirk that provided enhanced strength whilst the soles of the shoes contained a spring that added further damage in an attack. He referred to this as his Shoot Style where he developed a number of attacks with it including:

  • Detroit Smash (デトロイトスマッシュ Detoroito Sumasshu?) :
  • Delaware Smash (デラウェアスマッシュ Derawea Sumasshu?) :
  • Texas Smash (テキサススマッシュ Tekisasu Sumasshu?) :
  • Shoot Style: St. Louis Smash (シュートスタイル セントルイス スマッシュ Shūto Sutairu Sento Ruisu Sumasshu?) : involved jumping in the air where he delivered a roundhouse kick to the face of an opponent.

On one occasion, Midoriya felt that he could feel a number of other presences in his mind that were remnants of the personalities of the previous holders of the Quirk. These presences in his mind were able to help him on occasion where in one case they helped him use his Quirk to snap out of an attempted brainwashing power. He could find that he could gain access to a subconscious realm where echoes of the consciousnesses of the previous One For All holders dwelt in his mind. In some cases, he was known to experience vivid dreams during his sleep that was actually encounters with the vestiges. Though possessing superstrength, in reality One For All had stockpiled Quirks from its past wielders who helped cultivate the power. Each of these Quirks ability were magnified by One For All compared to their original version making them far more powerful. Initially, he did not have access to these powers but over time they began to awaken where they responded to his needs leading access to the ability that he needed for the task. However, anger was noted to had caused his ability to lash out of control where he struggled to stop them from rampaging unless stopped by another person. Even when controlled, Midoriya noted that the power was taxing on him and that he could not fully use it until he mastered One For All.

From the vestiges, he had the following abilities:

  • Fa Jin (発はっ勁けい Hakkei?) :
  • Danger Sense (危き機き感かん知ち Kiki kanchi?) :
  • Blackwhip (黒鞭クロムチ Kuro Muchi?) :
  • Smokescreen (煙えん幕まく Enmaku?) :
  • Float (浮ふ遊ゆう Fuyū?) :

Midoriya later looked to change his primary combat technique towards Shoot Style where he had Mei upgrade his costume which was called Costume Gamma (コスチュームγガンマ Kosuchūmu Ganma?). This saw new additions to the suit that included improved arm bracers that spanned the length of Deku's arms in order to prevent further damage to them whilst iron soles helped increase his kicking power.
