Biography
Original Timeline
Kabal was the name of a human who came to live in Earthrealm. At some point, he was noted for having been a member of the Black Dragon clan until he left their ranks. One day, Shao Kahn broke the sacred rules of Mortal Kombat to instigate an invasion and took Earthrealm by force. It was believed he was a survivor of an attack by Shao Kahn's extermination squads. When Kahn began stealing souls, Kabal was spared from this gruesome fate because he was one of Earthrealm's chosen warriors, destined to fight against Outworld's Emperor. Seeing all chosen warriors as a threat to his dominance, Shao Kahn ordered his extermination squads to annihilate him. Kabal managed to escape, but his face was left forever scarred, irreparably mutilated, and forced to rely on a respirator due to his windpipe being slit. The events of Shao Kahn's invasion had profoundly changed Kabal; he left behind his life of crime with the Black Dragon and vowed to become a force for good.
Eventually, he was tracked down by the Red Dragon clan where he was defeated by their leader Mavado. He came to leave Kabal for dead and took his hookswords as trophies where he was dying slowly until a stranger found him. This man was Havik who was a Cleric of Chaos who saved Kabal's life and convinced him to restore the Black Dragon clan to their former glory. Inspired by Havik, he went out to find and kill Mavado where he managed to track down the Red Dragon organization as well as reclaim his swords. He then went about recruiting young and skillful warriors to fill up the ranks of a new Black Dragon. The three of them joined Havik in Outworld though Kabal had ulterior motives as he saw the complacency of his former members leading to the demise of their clan. Thus, Kabal wanted to ensure that his newest recruits were truly worthy of the Black Dragon. He tested their prowess in battle against the enemies of the Dragon King.
Kabal confronted Taven after Taven had defeated Kobra and several other Black Dragon thugs in the Botan Jungle. He offered Taven a chance to join the clan, but Taven refused, which led to a fight between them, from which Taven emerged victorious. Later on Kabal joined the Forces of Darkness in the battle of Armageddon. He can be seen fighting Ermac and later trying to stop Stryker from climbing the Pyramid of Argus, however, it backfires and Kabal was thrown off of the pyramid, before getting beaten by Shao Kahn. Along with most of the kombatants, he was killed.
Reboot Timeline
During the Armageddon, Shao Kahn ultimately won where all of creation faced destruction but during the last moments of Raiden he managed to his past experiences back to his younger self. This created a change in the timeline as the younger Raiden was guided by the scattered visions of the future where he sought to avert this dark future.
Kabal was a reformed criminal turned police officer and is Kurtis Stryker's partner. He is first seen with Stryker observing New York being invaded by Outworld's forces. When Reptile shows up, Kabal tells Stryker to shoot first, ask questions later, in which Stryker says he was fine with it. After Stryker defeated Reptile, he tells Kabal that they are going street level, because they have been compromised. Kabal tries to warn Stryker that it is not safe to go to street level, in which Stryker says that it's better there than here. While Kabal and Stryker goes street level, they encounter Mileena. After Stryker defeats Mileena, the two of them encounter Raiden, as Kabal was suprised to see him shoot lightning from his hands. Suddenly, Kabal was burned alive by Kintaro during the Earthrealm invasion. Whilst Stryker had been thrown into the subway by Ermac after dealing with Kintaro, Kabal had been carried away by Outworld forces, leaving behind only a scorched imprint of himself on the pavement. Kabal had been dragged into Outworld, where he was healed and given his respirator by Shang Tsung's magic and Kano's technology. Kabal wakes up to find Kano who implores him to rejoin him, but he defeats his former boss in a fight after the latter openly admits that he is the one responsible for Outworld's firepower. He plans on visiting Shao Kahn but realizes he cannot get near him, as he is the emperor. So Kabal forces Kano to come with him, as the Black Dragon leader was an ally of Shao Kahn. Kano leads him to Shao Kahn's throne room, where he witnesses him murdering Shang Tsung to empower the corrupted and resurrected Sindel. Kano mocked Kabal about Shao Kahn being too powerful, but before finishing the sentence gets knocked unconscious by Kabal, stating that he was able to take down the emperor.
While making his way towards Shao Kahn, Mileena and Noob Saibot catch sight of him and challenge him, but are both defeated. Shao Kahn quickly demands Quan Chi to close a nearby portal which leads to Earthrealm, but Kabal inadvertently uses his superhuman speed to jump into the portal in time. In Earthrealm again, Kabal reaches the conclusion his super speed is a residual effect of Outworld's magic. He is then attacked by Cyber Sub-Zero for not being authorized for portal use but defeats him. Sheeva then starts a conflict with Kabal after witnessing him defeat the cyborg. Because he is unrecognizable with the mask and his half melted skin, Sheeva mistook him for a Lin Kuei cyborg. Kabal tells her that he is human and to not let the mask fool her. He defeated Sheeva, and Raiden, alongside Smoke, appears and welcome Kabal to join the Earthrealm warriors. Kabal, recognizing Raiden as the person who Stryker and asked if his compatriot was okay. Raiden assured him that Stryker joined their cause, and Kabal was also welcome to join as well. Kabal then learns that Cyber Sub-Zero was originally human, and what the Lin Kuei did to him was hideous. He agreed that Cyber Sub-Zero should be saved, and helped Smoke as they take Cyber Sub-Zero in an effort to save him. He was later killed by Sindel when she stomped on his chest, but was resurrected by Quan Chi to serve him. On Quan Chi's orders, the undead Kabal attacked Raiden, but was defeated.

Originally, he had been a member of the Black Dragon but came to leave their ranks when he looked to change his ways. In that time, he wanted nothing to do with that despicable organization but he could never manage to escape his past ties to it. After being resurrected, he came to be convinced to become the new leader of the Black Dragon and return the clan to its glory days. Thus, he re-devoted himself to them and went about filling its ranks of warriors of his choosing where he intended to weed out the week from the strong.
Powers and abilities
Kabal was noted to had been a human of Earthrealm who became a chosen warrior. As a result of injuries, he had an artificial respirator was keeping him alive.
According to one account, his speed was due to his brief time in Outworld when his ravaged body was exposed to the magic-heavy atmosphere of that realm granting him such power.
In combat, he was noted for his use of a pair of hookswords that he wielded with considerable skill.
