History

The Las Plagas (プラーガ, purāga?) parasite was first discovered by a religious order in Europe known as the Los Illuminados in a rural region of space. This cult began using the Plagas as a means of recruiting new members until the first castellan of the Salazar Family opposed their operations. The castellan's actions led to the defeat of the cult when the parasites were sealed off in his castle. As such, the Plagas remained trapped for centuries until the time of Ramon Salazar who was the eighth castellan of his family line. He would encounter a man by the name of Osmund Saddler who had reformed the Los Illuminados. Saddler managed to convince Salazar to join the cults ranks whereupon the seal trapping the Las Plagas was broken thus freeing them from their long imprisonment. To acquire them, the pair then began hiring the local villagers as miners to extract the parasites that had entered into a fossilized state. This gave them the appearance that the Las Plagas were dead but in fact they were still alive within the rocks below Salazar's castle as they were active on a microscopic level as spores within the fossil samples. As such, he excavation led to the unwitting miners inhaling the spores and allowed the rebirth of the parasites within their bodies. Thus, Saddler was able to recreate the parasites completely and began injecting their egg forms into potential hosts.

In 2004, Los Iluminados executed an ambitious plot to gain world influence. However, Dr. Luis Serra's leak led a B.O.W. manufacturer, dubbed the "rival company," to become aware of the Plagas. One of their H.C.F. agents, Jack Krauser, was sent to recover a sample for further study. Krauser's military experience made him instrumental in kidnapping Ashley Graham, daughter of President Graham, while she was on her way home from the University of Massachusetts. Graham was taken to Spain and injected with a Plaga egg through a syringe, with the expectation that she would become a Ganado and conduct operations on Saddler's behalf upon returning to the United States. Despite the US government keeping the kidnapping a secret, they received an anonymous tip linking Graham to the area. With many agents under investigation, only US-STRATCOM agent Leon S. Kennedy was forced to begin the investigation alone. Over the course of the night, the different parties worked with and against one another. Saddler ordered Kennedy's capture and implanted him with an egg to use him as an additional mole in the US. Serra wavered on whether to hand over the Dominant egg to Wong or Kennedy. Krauser and Wong turned on each other while both claiming loyalty to their H.C.F. liaison, Dr. Albert Wesker. By sunrise, Fr. Méndez, Salazar, Krauser, and Serra was dead. The Queen Plaga was destroyed, and Kennedy and Graham were free of the Plaga parasites. The group's bioweapons research was in ruins, along with their army of mind-controlled followers. With Saddler's death and the egg stolen from Serra, Wong finally turned-on Kennedy and took the Dominant Plaga for H.C.F. She helped Kennedy and Graham escape the island as explosives were set to cleanse the area.

Overview

In appearance, they were a type of parasite that altered their host's behavior but attaching themselves internally to the nervous system. Initially, the Plagas was found in an undeveloped state within the lungs beneath the heart where they tapped into their host's spinal cord as a link to the rest of the nervous system. Unlike other parasites, they were actually a social organism that led to them operating together in social harmony. It was suggested that they had a collective intelligence similar to a hive mind that communicated through ultra high frequency sound waves. Unhatched Plagas were able to affect their hosts where they created symptoms such as briefly causing their eyes to turn briefly red.

Despite their hosts maintaining some degree of mental function and independence, the intelligence of the Plagas themselves is debatable; Serra's notes speculated the self-destructive cult-like mentality adopted by the Ganados stemmed from the parasite's instinctive urge to spread itself, similar to some other brain-altering parasitic species. This behavior was further reinforced in the Ganados by Saddler's manipulations, as well as his artificial strain of Plagas that granted him increased influence over the actions of other hosts.
