• Lord of the Rings: c. 4062 BC (c. III 2995). Mordor's power begins to grow once more. By this time, the Rangers are guarding the Shire. Saruman becomes the servant of Sauron after foolishing using his palantir. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4061 BC (III 3001). Bilbo Baggins leaves the Shire, leaving his ring behind. Gandalf begins to believe Bilbo's ring is the One Ring, and the Rangers double their number of guards on the Shire. Gandalf asks Aragorn to help him track Gollum. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4060 BC (III 3002). Bilbo Baggins comes to live in Rivendell as Elrond's guest. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4058 BC (III 3004). Gandalf makes the first of several regular visits to Frodo Baggins that continue over the next four years. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4055 BC (III 3007). King Brand ascends to the throne of Dale. Gilraen dies. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4054 BC (III 3008). Gandalf makes his last visit to Frodo Baggins in the fall. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4053 BC (III 3009). Gandalf and Aragorn begin hunting for Gollum; their search takes them to Anduin, the Mirkwood and Rhovanion over the next eight years. In the meantime, Gollum is captured by Sauron, and Arwen is summoned by Elrond back to Imladris for her own protection. (The Return of the King)

• Andromeda: 4051 BC (870 CY). The Kaldera Alliance is formed, and begins fighting against Vedran expansion. ("A Commonwealth Timeline" at All Systems University)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4045 BC (III 3017). Gollum is freed by Sauron, and leaves Mordor, only to be captured by Aragorn and taken to Thranduil. Meanwhile, Gandalf reads the scroll of Isildur, confirming that Frodo Baggins has inherited the One Ring. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4044 BC (III 3018). Gollum escapes. The Fellowship of the Ring leaves Rivendell- their mission is to take the One Ring to Mount Doom where it can be destroyed. (The Fellowship of the Ring; The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4043 BC (III 3019). The Fellowship of the Ring breaks apart. The War of the Ring, the defeat of Sauron, the destruction of the One Ring and the fall of Barad-dur. Aragorn becomes King Elessar of Gondor and marries Arwen. (The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. Date derived from Tolkien's footnote in a letter, written in 1958, stating that the gap between the fall of Barad-dur and modern times was "about 6000 years.")

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4042 BC (III 3020). Samwise Gamgee marries Rose. Frodo Baggins returns the office of Mayor of the Shire to Will Whitfoot. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4041 BC (III 3021/IV 1). End of the Third Age and beginning of the Fourth Age. Samwise Gamgee and Rose's daughter Elanor is born. Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins, Galadriel, Gandalf and Elrond leave Middle-Earth on the White Ship. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4035 BC (IV 7 (SR 1427)). Samwise Gamgee replaces Will Whitfoot as Mayor of the Shire. Peregrin Took marries Diamond of Long Cleeve. King Elessar makes the Shire a free land under Gondor's protection, and forbids Men from going there. (The Return of the King)

• Lord of the Rings: c. 4032 BC (IV 10 (SR 1430)). Peregrin Took and Diamond's son Faramir is born. (The Return of the King)
