History
Origin
Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) was an organization that operated in the world and dealt in advanced technology. ((Strange Tales v1 #146) It was said that they were established in 1962 and functioned as an international cartel. (Strange Tales v1 #146) In reality, it was one of two branches established by Hydra's THEM division with its other counterpart being the Secret Empire. (Strange Tales v1 #147)
A.I.M. came to determine that S.H.I.E.L.D.'s formula for the creation of artificial men in the form of Life Model Decoys was superior to their own chemical androids. Thus, they made an active effort in attempting to steal the technology for themselves. (Strange Tales v1 #147)
The Red Skull formed an alliance with A.I.M. where he tasked them with the creation of the Cosmic Cube. (Tales of Suspense v1 #79)
Dr. George Tarleton worked with the team to create the Cosmic Cube, a device with infinite capabilities. The Scientist Supreme Lyle Getz decided they needed a way to study the cube, so they created project M.O.D.O.C. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing) to analyze and probe the Cosmic Cube and to improve the organization's productivity in its scientific endeavors, while still being subservient to the higher echelons of the organization. To that end, they mutagenically altered George into the super intelligent being, M.O.D.O.C. His massive cranium was too much to for his frail body to support so they placed him in a hoverchair dubbed the Doomsday Chair. These scientists unwisely did not take into consideration the theory that superior ability naturally leads to superior ambition. (Captain America v1 #120) It did not take long for M.O.D.O.C. to turn on his former masters and overthrow A.I.M. He adopted the new acronym for his title: M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) at this time as he was more of a ruthless killer than a bean counter in his own estimation. (Tales of Suspense v1 #94)
Sharon Carter tried to infiltrate A.I.M. To prove to the members of A.I.M. that she was loyal to them she informed them that Nick Fury would be at a designated barbershop for them to assassinate. They sent an A.I.M. android to attack their target at a nearby barber shop. Captain America arrived and stopped the android from killing Nick. Defeating it, the creature dissolved leaving no trace behind. (Tales of Suspense v1 #92) Captain America learned its origin and came to rescue Sharon from an A.I.M. submarine. He was undercover as an A.I.M. agent when his cover was blown. (Tales of Suspense v1 #93) M.O.D.O.K. tried to destroy Cap with his mind bolts, but during his fight A.I.M. betrayed its leader and tried to free themselves. As they tried to escape, M.O.D.O.K. detonated the self-destruct leaving everyone only moments to get clear of the blast. (Tales of Suspense v1 #94)
M.O.D.O.K. came to survive the encounter through his own abilities and the assistance of his synthetic androids. They helped him re-establish his base of operations in New Orleans where he kept his activities a secret with many of his enemies believing him slain. During this time, Doctor Doom sought to acquire the Cosmic Cube from the hidden installation thus bringing him and Namor into conflict with A.I.M. (Sub-Mariner v1 #48)
The organization came to ally itself with Klaw in order to conduct operations in the Savage Land. This was with the purpose of mining it of its supply of Vibranium with Klaw intending to destroy any remaining samples in an effort to draw out and destroy his arch-enemy the Black Panther. Their activities were set-up as an ambush which drew out Princess Shuri who worked alongside Shanna the She-Devil with the two battling A.I.M. (Klaws of the Black Panther v1 #1)
The Imperial Council of Seven later enacted a Project Brain Drain where they sought to artificially enhance human intelligence and create a controllable supermind. An A.I.M. agent was selected to undergo the process but the project could not achieve its results. Thus, A.I.M. looked to utilise the talents of Hank Pym and had their operative disguise herself as ex-wife Maria Pym in order to elicit his aid. This led to the completion of the project where she was transformed into S.O.D.A.M. (Solo Avengers v1 #16)
Fractured
A faction of A.I.M. sought to launch a rocket into space in order to hijack the government's experiments with Cavourite Crystals that were being used to harness interstellar flight and thus control the world. M.O.D.O.K. decided to acquire this power with his blue faction attacking a base of their rivals disguised underneath the Alden department store. Once there, they took the data they needed on the launch site and made their move to take over the launch only for them to be thwarted by the intervention of Ms. Marvel. (Ms. Marvel v1 #10)
A.I.M. was later fractured during the time when M.O.D.O.K. was dying from a disease with only a few were aware of this leading to various groups seeking to take control of the organization. (Ms. Marvel v2 #15) For months, S.H.I.E.L.D. had been targeting A.I.M. branches around the world with this being part of a new initiative known as Operation: Lightning Storm. (Ms. Marvel v2 #13)
A group that served as accountants for the organization later established a splinter cell who were led by Reginald Fisher. They used a number of old M.O.D.O.C.s for their computing power allowing them to launder money and fund their distribution side. After a few years, the cell began operating an accounting business and killed the M.O.D.O.C.'s to harvest them for parts to create Storyteller 2.0. to influence reality with their thoughts. Norman Osborn attempted to cement an alliance with this cell but they rejected his offer. (Ms. Marvel v2 #39)
A branch of A.I.M. looked to reactivate the Quintronic Man as a weapon for their arsenal and looked to abduct the only living pilot after acquiring the suit for themselves. The pilot was replaced by S.H.I.E.L.D. with Bruce Banner who transformed into the Hulk at A.I.M.'s headquarters where he successfully dismantled their operation and killed the cell leader. (Indestructible Hulk v1 #3) Agents from A.I.M. were responsible for kidnapping Maya Hansen and forcing her to recreate the Extremis serum with them killing her when she attempted to escape but not before she warned Tony Stark. Afterwards, A.I.M. headed a sale of Extremis with Colin-44 offering it as a flexible precise means of creating Homo Extremis super-humans. As Iron Man, Stark stopped the sale of further Extremis and neutralised the enhancile A.I.M. warriors but learnt that the kit had been sold to four other people. (Iron Man v5 #1)
Marvel Now!
In time, they came to be one of the five great criminal cartels in the world with them working together to make a megacrime organization. Thus, they came to stand alongside the Secret Empire, Hydra, Agence Byzantine and Black Spectre. These used the Midas Corporation as a leverage point with all the crime bodies pouring their confidential operations into the Omegadrive. (Daredevil v3 #6)
A.I.M. later purchased the island nation of Barbuda as it turned itself into a nation state. Around this time, they elected for a new leader with Andrew Forson chosen as the Scientist Supreme. (Fantastic Four v1 #610) He travelled to the remote research facility called the Gate in the Arctic Circle where he took part in an experiment to determine the future of A.I.M.'s great celestial experiment. Forson returned with an epiphany and as sovereign designate he went about his task to bring about this future. The entirety of the A.I.M. personnel at the facility then committed suicide whilst the laboratory self-destructed to leave no remains behind. He then travelled to the Chariot facility in Russia where he decided to purge A.I.M. of undesirables and reform the organisation. He then turned the organisation into a government with it headed by a High Council of A.I.M. whose members included Yelena Belova, Mentallo, Superia, Graviton and Jude the Entropic Man. (Secret Avengers v2 #2) A splinter faction led by M.O.D.O.K. came to believe that the main branch had become a fanatical cult and thus sought their destruction. To achieve that end, this branch decided to form an alliance with S.H.I.E.L.D. where M.O.D.O.K. offered to work for them and deliver them vital intelligence about A.I.M. Island. This included information about the Medusa base with a Secret Avenger mission being launched to destroy the secret facility. (Secret Avengers v2 #13)
Under Forson's rule, A.I.M. made contact with a branch of themselves that would come into existence in several decade. An arrangement was struck between past and future self where they traded advanced technology as well as innovations that allowed A.I.M. to improve itself in the modern day. (Avengers World v1 #9)
In the aftermath, da Costa came to re-organise the scientific/terrorist organization into Avengers Idea Mechanics. (Avengers v6 #0) They came to settle on Avengers Island that became their base of operations but the organizations past meant that it drew suspicion from S.H.I.E.L.D. To monitor it, they cam to dispatch Hawkeye who joined A.I.M. in order to prevent them from falling back into their villainous ways. (New Avengers v4 #1) Unknown to anyone, Songbird was also placed as a spy in the organization. (New Avengers v4 #8) Though in reality, she was a triple agent as she was actually working for da Costa. (New Avengers v4 #11)
The tense relations between A.I.M. and S.H.I.E.L.D. led to da Costa attempting to foster cooperation with the American government by giving them the captured Maker. (New Avengers v4 #17) This saw A.I.M. being re-organised to work on behalf of the U.S. and tasked with hunting down rogue cells from the organisation. General Robert Maverick then made a deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. whereby the organization worked for the U.S. where it was remodelled as American Intelligence Mechanics. (New Avengers v4 #18)
Da Costa's successor Toni Ho later decided to allow the rogue cells to reclaim the A.I.M. acronym and she rebranded those still loyal to her into a new organization that was called R.E.S.C.U.E. (Avengers v1 #690)
It was shown that A.I.M. had seemingly reformed under the leadership of Monica Rappaccini who had them engage in various technological thefts around the world. (Unstoppable Wasp v2 #1)
Overview
It was claimed that they were not a simple business organization or political union but instead a society consisting of the greatest minds on Earth. Their objective was stated to be the benefit of mankind. (Strange Tales v1 #146) A.I.M. had the most advanced scientific apparatuses of any criminal organization on the planet. (Tales of Suspense v1 #93) A.I.M.'s designers, technicians and manufacturers were said to had been the best in the world. (Quasar v1 #9) Some compared them to international science-terrorists that were similar to techno-apocalypse cults. (New X-Men v1 #143)
Leadership of the organization was often headed by an individual known as the Scientist Supreme. (Strange Tales v1 #146) At one point, it established a leadership body known as the High Council of A.I.M. where it operated as a type of government for their nation. This included people taking position as Ministers that filled the roles for State, Public Affairs, Education, Science and Health. (Secret Avengers v2 #2) The Imperial Council of Seven consisted of the secret rulers of A.I.M. (Solo Avengers v1 #16) When it operated as a business, it was noted to had held a promotions department. (Quasar v1 #9) Operatives wore the yellow encompassing uniforms with the helmets actually containing a heads-up-display that showed a great deal of information on targets. (Ms. Marvel v2 #11)
A.I.M. had developed a number of creations that included:
- A.I.M. Viruses : these viruses were evolved to go through a continuous cycle of evolution allowing them to grow in size and adapt to attacks. (X-Men v4 #18)
- Hypno-Helmets : a helmet that when worn generated subsonic frequencies that affected the mind of others making the user nearly invisible to them. (Tales of Suspense v1 #79)
- Sonatron : a device designed by Klaw that used the untapped power of high-frequency sound as a weapon thus rendering human targets unconscious. (Avengers v1 #87)
- Pulse Mite : an advanced microdrone able to incapacitate power armour from the inside via a specialised pulse emission with it being designed by Huang Qiaolian. (Iron Man: Titanium v1 #1)

(Ms. Marvel One-Shot v1 #1)
- Storyteller 2.0 : created from killing M.O.D.O.C.s to harvest them to create a neural net of human foetuses whose minds were enhanced with the Storyteller Protocols whilst their bodies were wired into advanced life support systems whilst their brains were networked together. They were able to alter reality with anything they could imagine becoming real. (Ms. Marvel v2 #39)
- Adaptoids : a blank featureless artificial human form able to take the shape of others and copy their abilities. (Tales of Suspense v1 #82)
- Project Brain Drain : a project that looked to artificially enhance human intelligence to create a supermind that was controlled by A.I.M. (Solo Avengers v1 #16)

- M.A.D.A.K. : the Metal Arachind Designed for Aggressive Killing were insectile machines deployed to attack enemies. (Captain America v1 #616)
They could create artificial men in the form of androids that came in a variety of designs. These included the aquatic amphibian androids and the yellow-skinned powerful brute hammer-hand androids. The artificial beings were grown like plants with production lines being made by them. When not programmed for a mission then they turned into lifeless fibre making them harmless at this point of their construction. (Strange Tales v1 #146) They had the ability to create highly sophisticated artificial simulacrum that were machines that were indistinguishable from humans and could be made in the guise of a person. (Solo Avengers v1 #16) It was shown that they had created their own versions of Sentinels that were made in the form of their operatives and dispatched on assignments in the name of science. (Domino: Hotshots v1 #3) There were numerous developments in M.O. Technology bio-mechanical research that allowed them to transform individuals into such powerful cybernetic entities. (Quasar v1 #9) For this purpose, they were known to harvest the brains of dead A.I.M. agents that were kept in special spherical containers. (Solo Avengers v1 #16) Subjects were placed within alteration chambers where they were transformed into whatever purpose needed by A.I.M. (Captain America v1 #133) Through gene manipulation, they were also able to create genetically engineered life forms like the Gnashers created from gorillas that were grown from artificial wombs and modify them in various ways such as reducing the need for sleep. (Ms. Marvel v2 #15) A.I.M. also had the means of creating clones with their output such as Colin-60 with these being sold to companies. (Iron Man: Fatal Frontier Infinite Comic v1 #11)
It had created the A.I.M. Network as a communication tool designed to hold data that was accessed through set protocols. (Ms. Marvel v2 #11) All members of A.I.M. science teams wore a GPS locator device so that they could be found in case they were lost in the field. (Deadpool: Merc With a Mouth v1 #3)
An automatic monitor system was used to protect their secret installations. (Sub-Mariner v1 #47)
A.I.M. had established a number of bio-havens that were shielded from the world and were self-sufficient. (Amazing Fantasy v2 #10)
At another point, they used their assets as an international corporation to purchase the island of Barbuda. This became A.I.M.’s base of operations as A.I.M. Island where it established itself as a nation state complete with diplomatic immunity. The nerve centre of their empire was the Science Scientorium. (Fantastic Four v1 #610)
