History
The Annihilators were a team of superpowered beings that were brought together to defend the universe from great threats. Their origin was traced to Star-Lord and his seeming death to stop the threat of the Cancerverse and the Many-Angled Ones. He had formed the Guardians of the Galaxy that consisted of a group of misfits who were supposed to help protect the universe. However, he came to see them as not necessarily being heroes and they were not the strongest beings around. Thus, he had plans for a group of cosmically powerful champions to be brought together with the purpose of annihilating any threat to the universe. He himself was unable to enact the plan before dying but he had Cosmo the Spacedog telepathically download this information and asked him to accomplish this goal. After the crisis was over, Cosmo went about this task where he came to recruit Wendell Vaughn, the Silver Surfer, Ronan the Accuser, Beta Ray Bill, and Gladiator into a team called the Annihilators who formed on Knowhere. Their first assignment was stopping an attack from Blastaar against Hala where he sought to topple the rule of the Inhuman Queen Medusa. (Thanos Imperative: Devastation v1 #1)
Knowhere was later infiltrated by Ikon of the Spaceknights where she attacked each of the Annihilators as she wanted to showcase her skills. She revealed that prior to his death that Star-Lord had invaded the Spaceknights to send a representative to join the Annihilators. Ikonnn had been chosen as he best of their number where she represented a precision fighter whose skill matched an alpha-plus level fighter but did not risk destroying the landscape as part of their power. Cosmo then detected a disturbance by the Dark Nebula from the domain of the Dire Wraiths where the Annihilators were dispatched to the Galadorian Keep that guarded the site. Inside, they found the station to be in chaos with most of the crew having been killed where they were confronted by the seemingly returned Dire Wraith Doctor Dredd. Despite their efforts, they were unable to stop the return of the Black Sun that would mark the return of the Dire Wraith's sorcery. (Annihilators v1 #1)
Overview
In appearance, the Annihilators were a team of cosmic heavy hitters that were gathered together to serve as protectors and heroes to defend the universe from grave threats. (Thanos Imperative: Devastation v1 #1) Its ranks consisted of powerful figures all of whom were registered at alpha-plus level power. (Annihilators v1 #1)
