Biography
Pre-Crisis
Evil Star was once a male humanoid from the planet Aoran who by adulthood had become a scientist. (Green Lantern v2 #37) It was known that he came to be married to the woman who became his wife and had children where he experienced endless joy. This was until a death came to deeply affect him leading to him fearing old age and dying which saw him turn his brilliance towards creating a device capable of keeping him young. Thus, he created the Star Bands that were powered by the star themselves though they contained an evil in them that began to affect his personality. He lived long but was loathed for the despicable acts he committed in this time such as stealing drugs that were being used to help the sick. Eventually, his wife and children grew old and died where he came to laugh at them as he stayed young but a part of him died with his family. For a time, he came to stop using the Star Bands but his fear of death overtook his self-hatred and he began to wear them again. Eventually, his villainy led to his own people turning against him and they rose up against him. However, they were unable to contend with his power where he proceeded to slaughter them all. Years ago, he claimed to had learnt to control the awesome energies of stars and suns. Compelled by it to conduct of evil, he looked to conquer the universe and constructed small humanoid beings he called Starlings to serve him. (Green Lantern v2 #37)
He remained trapped within his prison until the Guardians had to expand their energy to fight off the threat of Nekron. This weakened the prison containing Evil Star enough for him and his Starling to free themselves. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Evil Star
The Guardians later sent Evil Star to the Erral Rehab Facility, where they used a brain wave 'nullifier' in an attempt to cure him of his evil personality. This rehabilitation was only partially successful as the 'nullifier' stimulated his subconscious recreating the Starlings, who brought him the Star-Band. Evil Star fled to Earth in a confused state, believing the Starlings were persecuting him. (Darkstars v1 #3) He fought with Ferrin Colos, one of the Darkstars who flooded Star's mind with reminders of the lives he had taken starting with his home world. Evil Star's mind shut down as areuslt and he was returned to the Guardians for re-education. (Darkstars v1 #4)
On Earth, Evil Star went to Roulette's House in Nevada in order to attend one of her gladiatorial contests. He was among the crowd of villains that watched members of the JSA forced to fight each other. (JSA v1 #28)
Evil Star was involved in an illegal extraterrestrial weapons trading on Earth which drew the attention of the Green Lantern Corps. He attempted to escape on his ship where he was passing by the China region where his Green Lantern pursuers were confronted by the country's defenders known as the Great Ten. They opposed an unauthorised intrusion into Chinese airspace leading to a three-way battle with Evil Star attempting to escape. Green Lantern Hal Jordan looked to stall Evil Star's escape by destroying his ship and incinerating the alien technology to prevent it from falling into anyone's hands. However, tensions were high as the battle against the Great Ten continued who were aided by Black Adam as he had formed the Freedom of Power Treaty among nations that looked to curtail American influence on the world. Further hostilities were ended when the Green Lanterns and their captive Evil Star reached the Russian border where the Rocket Red Brigade escorted them to safety as they had allied with the U.S. against Black Adam's coalition. Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Evil Star
At some point, he came to be captured by the Green Lantern Corps and kept imprisoned in the Sciencells. Oa later came under attack from Relic who intended to destroy the world where he freed them. The prisoners were offered a chance to join the Khund/Durlan alliance against the Green Lantern Corps but they instead joined the Green Lanterns against a common enemy. Afterwards, Evil Star was imprisoned in the Obsidian Deeps where he was under the care of Rot Lop Fan who kept him isolated from any starlight. However, he was freed by the Blackstars but was then killed and he had his Star-Brand stolen. (The Green Lantern v1 #2)
Overview
Personality and attributes
He had created the Star Bands in an attempt to conquer death. It was his fear of death that caused him to embrace the power offered by the device. This was even when he grew to hate the Star Band for keeping him young whilst his loved ones died from old age. In time, his own people turned against him and he slaughtered them all though he secretly wished they had won and succeeded in killing him. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
As a result of his experiences, he came to hate himself for the evil acts he had been compelled to commit in his life. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
The evil persona within him thought of him as a literal star of evil which wanted to make others as evil as him. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
In his life, he used to be married with a wife and children where he experienced joy that seemed endless. The result of his experiments with the Star Band kept him young whilst his family aged. At this point, his declining mental state saw him laugh as his family grew old and died whilst he stayed young. However, a part of him was said to had died alongside his family. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
Powers and abilities
Originally, the person who became Evil Star was a brilliant alien scientist. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
He was armed with the Star Band that he claimed was a weapon mightier than a Power Ring. It seemingly operated on similar principles as the Oan device though had no particular weaknesses. According to Evil Star, the band compelled its user to employ it for evil purposes. (Green Lantern v2 #37) He was in fact the developer of the Star Band which was fuelled by the stars themselves and designed to increase the wearers life span. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
Stellar radiation could be harnessed from stars themselves which was used to keep Evil Star young and allowed him to life for countless years. (Green Lantern v2 #159)
In addition, he was aided by five diminutive humanoid constructs dressed in a similar manner as himself with these being referred to as Starlings. Each possessed the same Star Bands as their master and were thus capable of similar feats as him. (Green Lantern v2 #37) They were said to be absolutely invulnerable even to the powers of a Green Lantern. The Starlings though were completely reliant on their master to do their thinking for them otherwise they would be aimless. (Green Lantern v2 #159)

- Evil Star was created by Gardner Fox and Gil Kane where he made his first appearance in Green Lantern v2 #37 (June, 1965).
Alternate Versions
- In Batman: In Darkest Knight v1 #1 (1994), an alternate version of the character appeared in the reality designated as Earth-32 in the Multiverse. This version was merged with that of Two-Face to create the villain known as Binary Star. Harvey Dent was the Gotham District Attorney and was shown to be more supportive of Green Lantern than Commissioner Gordon. Sinestro, after becoming deranged from absorbing Joe Chill's mind, scarred Dent's face and empowered him along with Selina Kyle known as Star Sapphire and sent them out to kill the Green Lantern, with Dent known as 'Binary Star. Even though they were defeated, the pair managed to escape back to Sinestro.
- In Future State: Suicide Squad v1 #1 (2021), an alternate version of Evil Star was shown in the possible timeline of Future State. He was shown to had joined an incarnation of Task Force X's Suicide Squad where he was on a team headed by Peacemaker. They travelled to Earth-3 on a mission to find and retrieve Amanda Waller who was looking to seal that world from the rest of the Multiverse. The Suicide Squad then came into conflict with Waller's Justice Squad where Mirror Master was killed during the mission.
In other media
Television
- In The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, Evil Star appeared in the Green Lantern segment of the animated television series in the episode "Evil is as Evil Does" where he was voiced by actor Paul Frees.
- In Justice League Unlimited, Evil Star appeared in the animated television series set in the DC Animated Universe where he was voiced by uncredited actor George Newbern. in the episode "The Cat and the Canary" as a participant in Roulette's Meta-Brawl, he joins Gorilla Grodd's Secret Society as of the episode "I Am Legion". Prior to and during the episodes "Alive!" and "Destroyer", Lex Luthor takes command of the Society, but Grodd mounts a mutiny. Evil Star sides with the former before Darkseid attacks and kills most of the Society. Luthor, Evil Star, and the other survivors subsequently return to Earth, warn the Justice League, and join forces with them to thwart Darkseid's invasion.
- In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Evil Star appeared in the animated television series in the episode "Revenge of the Reach!" where he was voiced by actor J.K. Simmons.

- In DC Universe Online, Evil Star appeared in the setting of the MMORPG where he was voiced by actor Joey Hood.
