Biography

Jared Stevens was a male individual born around the modern age where at some point he had enlisted in the military and served in the CIA. During this time, he was married but had gone through a divorce whereupon he had left the service. He then adopted the life of a grave robber who was dispatched around the globe to collect artifacts that he brought back to the United States. During this time, the Zero Hour event had occurred where Extant battled Doctor Fate. The villain had aged Doctor Fate's host bodies Kent Nelson and Inza Nelson to their chronological ages whereupon he scattered their artifacts throughout various dimensions, where they eventually appeared in Egypt. Unknown to Stevens, he had been dispatched to Egypt for a mission where he recovered the artifacts. After he arrived in the U.S., Kent and Inza summoned Jared to the Tower of Fate in Salem so they could reclaim the artifacts. However, the artifacts rejected Kent and Inza after they claimed them from Jared. A demon called Kingdom sent two minions to the tower to take the artifacts so he could use them to open a portal between the Dreadlands and Earth. Kingdom's minions appeared at the tower, killed the Nelsons and attempted to steal the artifacts. During the battle, Jared attempted to use the Amulet as a weapon, which then exploded and imbued him with various magical abilities and a red ankh tattoo over his right eye. The tower was also destroyed during the battle and reduced to rubble. Jared's injuries forced him to use the cloak as a wrap for his right arm and melt the Helm down into a set of ankh-shaped darts and a dagger. Jared eventually drove the demons away and was then summoned by Nabu, the Lord of Order who controlled the previous Doctor Fates in the past. Nabu attempted to make Jared the new Doctor Fate, but Jared refused and Nabu vanished.

Eventually, Jared reluctantly accepted his role as Earth's mystical defender where he acted as a balance between Order and Chaos with Stevens taking the name Fate. During his battles, he teamed up with the supernaturally powered team of fugitives Scare Tactics, the demon Etrigan and other forces to combat threats from the realm of Gemworld.

Jared was later murdered by Mordru, who was attempting to kill all the agents of Chaos and Order and claim Fate’s artifacts for himself.

This left him mortally wounded but he managed to escape where he arrived at the Valhalla Cemetery during the funeral for Wesley Dodds that was being attended to by his friends in the Justice Society of America. With his last breath, he warned the heroes that the 'Dark Lord' was responsible both for his own and Dodds demise before he died. It was then that the Sons of Anubis arrived with the army of undead attempting to lay claim to the artefacts of Fate with the superheroes looking to protect them. After defeating the undead mummies, they found that the relics of Fate had disappeared leaving only Jared Stevens remains behind. (JSA v1 #1)

Jared's equipment reverted back to its original forms and returned to the Tower of Fate upon his death, where the newly revived Hector Hall was able to become the new Dr. Fate.
