Limbo (Immortus)

Timeless dimension ruled by Immortus, caretaker of the timestream for seventy centuries (including the 20th). In Limbo, time is not linear, and as such things may remain frozen, move backwards or forwards, or even change without warning. (Fortunately, this effect does not seem to extend to beings from linear time.) It is a vantage point from which all other time periods and timelines may be seen, and is the home of several other races and beings, including the giant Tempus (a creation of Immortus), the time-lost Space Phantoms, the "Limbo Bugs," and aerial Limbic Infundibula.

Limbo (Belasco)

Demon dimension, where time and space fold in on themselves. It was ruled by the wizard Belasco for some time. He was later expelled by the Darkchilde, Illyana Rasputin. She came to rule using the Soulsword, but that dominion was tenuous and perpetually undermined by demons including S'ym and Nastir'h. The techno-organic infection of the Technarchy made its way here (by accident) thanks to Illyana, turning several demons (including S'ym) into beings of living circuitry. Limbo was apparently multiversally connected, as a group of X-Men from an alternate timeline also found their way here, before being claimed by the dimension's demonic nature.

Limbo nearly merged with Earth thanks to the machinations of S'ym and his manipulation of Illyana in her most demonic aspect, but the plan was ruined by the various X-teams in what was called the Inferno crisis.

Alternate Timelines

In one divergent timeline, the merging succeeded, but the planet was purified by Phoenix- just before the Living Tribunal would have obliterated that Earth.

Limbo (Rom)

Interdimensional void where Rom exiled Dire Wraiths when he defeated them. This dimension is connected to the timeless Limbo.

Comments

Some more recent stories seem to assume that Immortus' Limbo and Rom's Limbo are one and the same. For example, Dire Wraiths were part of Immortus' army during the Timequake crisis.

In the Earth X universe, all three Limbos are the same dimension.

Television

  • In X-Men, Limbo appeared in the setting of the animated 1990s television series. A future incarnation of Apocalypse from the year 3999 AD would come to realisation that his conquest of Earth would forever be stymied by his enemies. As a result, he stole Cable's computer and used its time travel function to travel to Limbo to secure victory once and for all. He found himself in the citadel residing there and spent centuries understanding its secrets. He then recruited various allies to help kidnap telepaths from his Earth and used their psychic powers to destroy the current universe and create a new one where he reigned supreme. Immortus himself remained undetected by Apocalypse and disguised himself as a seemingly insane man named Bender who claimed to be the janitor in what he referred to as the Axis of Time. He soon found the future X-Man Bishop from the year 2055 AD of Earth-31393. Bishop was caught in the temporal disturbance caused by Apocalypse's time traveling and ended up in Limbo himself. As Bender, Immortus guided Bishop through his realm and showed him glimpses of events that were part of Apocalypse's schemes as they occurred in the present on Earth-92131. Immortus provided Bishop with cryptic information, which ultimately led to the X-Men and their allies defeating Apocalypse and freeing the captured telepaths. The fortress of Immortus was seemingly destroyed in the process, but after the heroes returned to their native reality, Immortus ditched his Bender disguise and began the rebuilding of his citadel.
  • In Super Hero Squad Show, Limbo appeared in the setting of the animated television series second season in the episode "Revenge of the Baby Sat!". A temporal mishap caused Iron Man, Scarlet Witch and Falcon to revert to the age of toddlers. Hoping to return Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon to their adult selves, Thor, Ms. Marvel, and H.E.R.B.I.E. stole Doctor Doom's time machine and used it to enter Limbo. They fought several Space Phantoms, but stopped once Thor realized that they were the invaders. The Space Phantoms agreed to take the heroes to the Time Tower, where they found Doom, along with Abomination and M.O.D.O.K. having taken control of the Tower and its power. Thor, Ms. Marvel, H.E.R.B.I.E., and a Phantom attempted to fight Doom, who altered their speed and then made them older. H.E.R.B.I.E. infiltrated the Tower and used it to open a time portal, bringing Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon in as toddlers. The toddlers attacked Doom while Wolverine and Hulk arrived and fought M.O.D.O.K. and Abomination. The Super Hero Squad defeated Doom, M.O.D.O.K., and Abomination while H.E.R.B.I.E. returned them to their proper age. Doom was turned into a toddler while the Super Hero Squad returned to their world.
