  • 1901: Real World - Australia's first Parliament convenes in Melbourne.
  • 1926: Real World - Richard Byrd claims to have flown over the North Pole. (This claim has come into doubt in recent years.)
  • 1941: Real World - U-110, a German submarine, is captured by British forces. On board is an Enigma cryptography machine, which later helps the Allies decrypt encoded German messages.
  • 1950: Real World - Robert Schuman makes a proposal for an organized Europe- this is cited as the beginnings of the European Union.
  • 1960: Real World - In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration approves sale of the birth control pill.
  • 1966: Real World - The People's Republic of China explodes its first hydrogen bomb.
  • 1974: Real World - Impeachment hearings are opened by the U.S. House of Representatives against President Richard Nixon.
