Biography

Oswell E. Spencer, The Earl Spencer (オズウェル・E・スペンサー Ozuweru Ī Supensā?) was a male human born in the 20th century. He was the child of a prominent and prestigious family which stood among the elites of European society for several generations. Spencer came to be a close friend of a fellow nobleman named Lord Edward Ashford and during his studies at university he knew a schoolmate named James Marcus. During the 1950's, he came to regularly invite the pair to his castle during Summer vacations.

While taking a solo hiking trip in Eastern Europe, he became lost due to his inexperience in the unfamiliar terrain and collapsed on a snow-covered road. Whilst there, he was rescued by Miranda, the priestess and biologist of an isolated mountain village which worshipped the Black God. Taken in by Miranda as a protégé, Spencer learned about the Mold and its ability to mutate, assimilate and replicate lifeforms, which inspired him a means to achieve evolutionist goals. Although he enjoyed his time with Miranda and the vast biological knowledge he gained from her, the two held very different world views, as Miranda longed to revive her deceased daughter while Spencer wished to change the world. Consequently, Spencer decided to leave the village, but would continue to keep in touch with Miranda by writing to her. Returning to his university a changed man, Spencer became driven to replicate Miranda's achievements in his own way, as he deemed the Mold ineffective to achieving his goals. With the Cold War intensifying, Spencer began to view humanity as a race destined to fall, and believed that only through evolving mankind and attaining a superior moral code could this be averted. Though he lacked a means to accomplish this, he believed the answer lay within the emerging field of virology.

In the 1960's, he came to learn the existence of a mythical plant named the Stairway of the Sun that was said to exist in a remote location in Africa. Spencer decided to lead an expedition team to find and investigate this plant with laboratories being commissioned for its potential discovery. On the expedition, Spencer along with Marcus and his star pupil Brandon Bailey journeyed into Africa in 1966 with them finding a city of the once great Ndipaya Kingdom where there resided the secret underground Garden of the Sun that held the plant. From it, they came to discover a unique RNA virus that they came to refer to as the Progenitor Virus.

By 1968, Spencer alongside Sir Asford and Dr. Marcus came to co-found the Umbrella Corporation. Of the three, he is the sole surviving member and is the unopposed ruler of the corporation. He, Ashford and Marcus discovered the the Progenitor Virus, which they used to create the T-Virus. They then founded Umbrella to act as a cover for their bioweapons research.

Spencer conducts some of his company’s research in the Arklay Research Facility, in the Arklay Mountains. He originally hired George Trevor, a famed architect to construct the Spencer Mansion located outside of Raccoon City. However, he soon became paranoid that Trevor knew too much about the mansion’s secrets and looked to eliminate anyone who might had known about them. Spencer kidnapped his wife and daughter, Jessica and Lisa. Rather than killing them, Spencer uses them as human guinea pigs for Umbrella’s research, and killed Trevor. After the death of Edward Ashford, Lord Spencer and James Marcus fought for total control of Umbrella. Spencer won out eventually, ordering Albert Wesker to have Marcus assassinated.

Although the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City in 1998 brought Umbrella's illicit activities to the attention of the United States government and many high-ranking Umbrella executives were extradicted to the US for their crimes, Spencer's fate remains unknown.

At this time, the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance came to uncover Ozwell's location and dispatched a BSAA team consisting of Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. They arrived only to find Spencer dead and battled Albert Wesker.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Oswell developed a taste for the arts, literature and hunting - all of which seemed appropriate enough to the rest of his family so they allowed him to pursue all of these.

As he grew older, World War II began - and it was during this time he remained hidden and poured himself over his texts and the newsreels. He began to take a strong interest in the sciences, particularly chemistry and biology and travelled the world looking for inspiration.

The only person he truly trusted was his loyal butler Patrick whose family had served the Spencers for generations.

Powers and abilities

A biological trait that was engineered in the Wesker children was for them to seek out Ozwell and that they experienced unending anxiety until they came to Spencer. This was designed as a failsafe feature to keep them under control. However, this failsafe only worked so long as the Wesker child did not know the truth about the programming.
