The Resistance is an organization that features in Star Wars.

History

The Resistance was a small secretive private military force that was established in the years of the New Republic. It was founded by rebel hero Leia Organa who created it with the goal of monitoring the actions of the First Order. Most of the power brokers of the New Republic tolerated the Resistance with them viewing Leia Organa along with her followers being fixated on the past. To survive, the crash-strapped movement relied on credits, ships and equipment that was secretly funnelled to them from the few Senators that were sympathetic to their cause.

In time, the Resistance was in a desperate race with the First Order to find the location of Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi. General Leia Organa hoped to recruit her brother back into the fight, whilst Kylo Ren of the First Order sought to eliminate him. However, the Supreme Leader Snoke, leader of the First Order and Kylo Ren's master, only sought to prevent the Resistance from reaching him first. This culminated in General Organa dispatching agent Poe Dameron to Jakku to recover part of a navigational star map to the first Jedi temple from an old ally, Lor San Tekka, where Skywalker was believed to be residing, though Ren intercepted Dameron and captured him, killing San Tekka in the process. Dameron's droid, BB-8, was able to escape with the map. Dameron was tortured for information but would escape with the aid of defector stormtrooper FN-2187, whom Dameron dubbed Finn. They crashed and landed back on Jakku, where Dameron was presumed dead, though Finn came to find the droid BB-8 in the company of local scavenger Rey. When the two were seen together, they were marked by First Order stormtroopers and forced to escape Jakku together aboard the Millennium Falcon, which was docked in a local establishment.

The Millennium Falcon was later found and captured by Han Solo and Chewbacca, who are forced to escape with Rey, Finn, and BB-8 after they are pursued by two rival criminal gangs, though one of them identifies the droid BB-8 and informs the First Order of it now being in the hands of Solo. Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and BB-8 find refuge on Takodana with Solo's old friend Maz Kanata, who runs a refugee castle on the planet and has some knowledge of the Force herself, though is not a Jedi. There, Kanata implores Solo to return to his wife, the two having split after a tragic incident when their son, Ben Solo's fall to the dark side and transformed into Kylo Ren. They helped Finn, who revealed to Rey that he was a stormtrooper, find passage to the Outer Rim to disappear, and advises Rey, who is strong in the Force, to take Skywalker's lightsaber, which Kanata has been holding onto. Rey refuses, however, and runs into the forest. While Finn loads onto a transport and Rey runs away, General Hux uses the Starkiller Base superweapon to destroy the New Republic capital, where the Republic Senate and Starfleet are also destroyed, shattering the Republic government and confirming the Resistance's worst fears, leaving the galaxy vulnerable to First Order conquest. Kylo Ren attacks Takodana and takes Rey captive after learning she has seen the map, withdrawing the stormtrooper forces when the surviving Poe Dameron comes to aid with Resistance starfighter pilots. Solo reunites with his wife and travels to D'Qar with her, Finn, and BB-8, where Finn reunites with Poe Dameron.

In the aftermath, the Resistance continued to operate against the First Order which now was in control of the galaxy. Around this time, a mysterious informant was feeding intelligence to the Resistance. By this point, a transmission came to the galaxy that was seemingly by the slain Emperor Palpatine. The spy within the First Order then revealed that Palpatine had survived the Battle of Endor and was operated from a hidden world where he had built up a massive army known as the Final Order. These forces were linking up with the First Order in order to crush the Resistance and conquer the galaxy. Thus, the Resistance began to look to find the secret Sith world of Exegol and eliminate the fleet the Emperor had built on that planet.

Overview

In appearance, the Resistance was a rag-tag group that used its meagre resources in order to oppose the First Order.

Leadership was headed by the Resistance High Command that decided decisions of military importance. One of the bodies within their military was the Resistance Starfighter Corps that consisted of pilots from the ranks of Rebel Alliance veterans, disillusioned New Republic officers and adventure seekers from all across the galaxy.

Soldiers within the Resistance consisted of well trained and equipped troopers that relied on hit-and-run tactics to engage more overwhelming forces.

They made use of a variety of Starfighters that included the:

• A-Wing :
• Incom T-70 X-Wing : the latest incarnation of the classical X-Wing design that became the signature combat vehicle of the Resistance. This model was faster than the Rebellion era T-75s with them being maneuverable enough to engage TIE Fighters in dogfights and still be powerful enough to combat capital ships.

In terms of starships, they made use of Mon Calamari MC-90 Capital Ships.

• The Resistance was created by Lawrence Kasdan, J. J. Abrams, and Michael Arndt where they made their first appearance in the new trilogy starting with Star Wars: Episode VII - the Force Awakens.

Video games

• In Star Wars: Battlefront 2, the Resistance was a playable faction in the 2017 video game. They were shown to had formed in opposition to the First Order with General Leia Organa in charge of them.
