Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. is a facility that features in Marvel Comics.

History

Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.

Project: P.E.G.A.S.U.S. was a special program organized by the Department of Energy, as a site for the study of all forms of energy in hopes of finding viable substitutes. It was built to be utterly impregnable, and was top secret. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #42) The Project facility was designed by Skip Markham, Dr. Myron Wilburn, and Basera Staar. P.E.G.A.S.U.S. was designed as a sterile environment; once it was completed visitors underwent decontamination upon entering the facility. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #53)

The Project hired Dr. Thomas Lightner as a consultant on cosmic energy. After the defeat of Thanos, the Cosmic Cube was recovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. with Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. studying its latent thought wave as an energy source. Given unusual security problems, P.E.G.A.S.U.S. asked S.H.I.E.L.D. for help and Nick Fury asked Captain America to spend some time at Project: P.E.G.A.S.U.S., investigating. Wundarr was brought to Project: P.E.G.A.S.U.S. for testing. They used him in tests hoping to unlock the secrets of the Cosmic Cube, as well as to cure his stunted mental growth. Following his exposure to the Cube, all forms of energy around Wundarr began shutting down, forcing the facility to confine him in a very large and mostly empty room. Quasar Wendell Vaughn joined Project: P.E.G.A.S.U.S. as head of security. The Thing joined Project: PEGASUS as security. Thomas Lightner covertly created a security breach which allowed Roxxon's Deathlok robot to enter the facility. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #42) The Thing and Quasar defeated Deathlok, destroying the robot in the process. Bill Foster joined PEGASUS as a staff scientist, bringing the corpse of Atom-Smasher for study. Lightner released Nuklo to create confusion in order to gain time needed to finish building a Nth Projector that Deathlok had been unable to finish. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #54) The Thing and Giant-Man Bill Foster stopped Nuklo, though his appointed guardian, Henri Sorel, chewed the pair out for their violent actions. Quasar prevented a near-meltdown caused by Nuklo and Lightner's actions. Giant-Man was subsequently given security status at P.E.G.A.S.U.S. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #55) Thundra and the Grapplers consisting of Letha, Titania (DaVita), Poundcakes, and Screaming Mimi breaking into P.E.G.A.S.U.S., but were stopped by Quasar, Giant-Man, and the Thing; meanwhile, Lightner completed his Nth Projector. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #55) A security meeting involving Dr. Wilburn, Margaret Mayfair, Anson Harkov, and the Thing, Quasar, and Giant-Man provided no answers to the string of difficulties. However, follow-up by the three heroes uncovered Lightner's presence at most of the problems, but Lightner activated his Nth Projector on himself at about that time. Meanwhile, Wundarr had awoken and traveled to the Cosmic Cube; his passage allowed Solarr and Klaw to escape their confinement. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #57) Wundarr transformed into the Aquarian via the Cube, and Lightner became the Nth Man by using the Nth Projector on himself. Eventually the Thing, Thundra, Quasar, Giant-Man, and the Aquarian stopped Lightner, and the Thing and the Aquarian left PEGASUS shortly thereafter. Foster remained, having revealed that he was suffering from radiation poisoning and was seeking PEGASUS' help in treating it. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #58)

During Dark Reign, H.A.M.M.E.R. soldiers were deployed to secure the facility and proceeded to shut down Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. (Nova v4 #23)

The facility was reactivated sometime afterwards where it was conducting experiments on the fragments of the Cosmic Cube. During this time, the Absorbing Man was being held in captivity who was freed secretly by the actions of Loki. When Norman Osborn and Hank Pym's respective Avengers arrived at the scene, the two superhero teams proved to be too late as the Absorbing Man had managed to absorb the properties of the Cube. (Mighty Avengers v1 #32)

Following the Pleasant Hill incident, remaining fragments of the Cosmic Cube were taken by Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. for study into the possibility of using Isotope-8 as a clean source of energy. Colonel Carol Danvers learnt of the research and had the experiment shut down as a result. (Ultimates v2 #7)

Overview

As a special program, it was organised by the Department of Energy which studied all sources of energy in order to find viable power substitutes. (Marvel Two-in-One v1 #42) Their research into alternate energy sources included solar, thermal, magneto, gravitic and others. (Avengers v3 #6)

A transit corridor was located within the project with this being known as the Loop. (Avengers v3 #6)

Heroes with Paladin-level security clearance were allowed entry into the Project though the Administrator had latitude on who they let into the base. (Avengers v3 #6)

• Andrew Kappelhof : a male who served as the Project Administrator for a time though he was secretly the Corrupter who was manipulating the Squadron Supreme on the site. (Avengers v3 #6)
• Jason Rivera : a male scientist who was cataloguing all known parahumans allowing for them to be cross referenced by powers, history, modus operandi and other traits. (Avengers v3 #6)
• Adrienne Brashear : female scientist who was the daughter of Black Marvel and operated as assistant administrator at the project. (Ultimates v2 #7)

Notes

• Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. was created by Mark Gruenwald and Ralph Macchio where it made its first appearance in Marvel Two-in-One v1 #42 (August, 1978).

• In Iron Man: Armored Adventures, Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. made a number of appearances in the animated cartoon series. In "Seeing Red", it was shown that the Project was managed by an artificial intelligence called DELPHI.

Films

• In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. was referenced a number of times in the shared continuity setting.
  • In Iron Man 2, Tony Stark was seeking to synthetize a new element to replace his Arc Reactor chest piece with a crate he opened being marked with the name 'Project Pegasus'.
  • In Captain Marvel, Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. appeared in the live-action prequel film that was set in the 1990s. It was revealed that the organization was a joint research project between NASA and the USAF with one of its chief scientists being Dr. Wendy Lawson. She possessed the Tesseract and was using it to create a light-speed drive with an experimental engine being flown by test pilots Carol Danvers and Marie Rambeau.
