History
Early use
The Atavus were known to had made use of Portal technology as far back as three million years ago. A female Atavus by the name of Nahema was known to had escaped into interdimensional space in order to flee from an asteroid storm that engulfed primeval Earth. With it, she jumped through various points in the timeline where she was regarded as a demon to mankind. Going into the 21st century, she was later followed back into the past by Renee Palmer though the human defeated the female Atavus by forcing her to re-emerge from interdimensional space into a wall thus killing her. After that, Renee left back to her own timeline but not before damaging the Atavan Portal in order to prevent the Atavus from using it to travel into the future. (Episode: Legacy)
Ma'el was known to had made an early use of the technology at least two thousand years ago when he arrived on the planet Earth. In Southern Asia in a remote island, he deployed a Portal that linked to an underground Atavan regeneration complex which was mono-directional in order to prevent its inhabitants from leaving their tomb. He put into place actions that would allow it to be used by the Taelons when they arrived on Earth to save their species from genetic extinction. (Episode: Point of No Return) The Taelons became the sole retainers of the technology after the slumber of the Atavus with the Jaridians denied usage of interdimensional travel. (Episode: Gauntlet) According to them, they had been using the portal technology for centuries without a single fatality on the Taelon homeworld. (Episode: Payback)
Upon arriving on Earth, the Taelons began to incorporate their portal technology with those of humans. Cooperation was headed by twin researchers with the human Director of Portal Research being Doctor Jeffrey Whitfield who worked closely with the Taelon engineer advisor Sa'al. (Episode: Payback) When they were among Humans, they began one of their many projects in improving their public image to the Human inhabitants. This in turn led to the creation of the Portal Project which was also known as the Fixed-link Inter-dimensional Travel Project. After the projects completion, it was commenced operations that last for two months and tested for more than a year. (Episode: Through the Looking Glass) Seen by humanity as a faster method of travel, numerous portal stations were created around the world with 54 being made and a further 20 under constructions with the intention of linking every part of the world together. (Episode: Payback)
During the initial testing of the portal network, it was partly subverted by Zo'or who used it to gather human genetic information secretly, numerous experiments were conducted on individuals who were in stasis and sent to the Taelon base on the moon. The information was used to select individuals of high intelligence in order for implantation for CVI's or, with women, create an artificially created fetus. (Episode: Through the Looking Glass) Da'an believed that the Taelon's continued use of such a secret method of experimentation would undermine Humanity's trust in them but he was ignored. The system would later be used by Zo'or to escape the explosion at the Naryan Mar lab in Russia. (Episode: Destruction). The Human scientist and business woman known as Beverly Woo pushed the creation of Portal Space; company that made use of the Portal technology. (Episode: Heroes and Heartbreak)
Final Conflict
In an effort to combat the traffic caused by extensive use of Portals on Earth, research was conducted by mankind into exploring interdimensional pathways that even the Taelons had not charted. This in turn led to breaching into a dimension where small insectile energy creatures emerged that began draining the world of energy as well as killing several Taelons in the process due to their energy based anatomy. This ended when Liam Kincaid used an interdimensional drive generator to send the creatures back to their realm. (Episode: Fissures) When the Portal Authority began to further study the technology after a number of problems - they hired Marcus Devearux as a consultant. (Episode: Interview)
The Taelons made use of the Portals in their effort to combat the Jaridians during the creation of the Volunteer Program. By training human shock troopers, they created an army to battle their ancient genetic foes which were transported into another galaxy by use of the Portals. Through secret installations, the Portals were given enough energy to send these soldiers to intergalactic locations where they fought and died against their alien foes. This was the case until Liam Kincaid and the Resistance sabotaged their operations thus forcing the Volunteers to retreat back to Earth. (Episode: Volunteer)
After capturing Lili Marquette, the Jaridians continued with their study of interdimensional technology and even managed to send a strike down through a Portal to Earth. Before doing so, this strike force made use of holographic disguises to make them appear as humans whereupon they took the identities of deceased Human Resistance fighters which were led by a female Jaridian that took the name Kira Dorn. By intercepting the Portal, they intended to make Humanity create a particle weapon that would have incinerated the world. However, Liam Kincaid and the Resistance managed to thwart the Jaridian goal after which the Taelons scrambled the Portal frequency in order to prevent any further Jaridian infiltration attempts. (Episode: The Second Wave)
Da'an used remote controlled Taelon satellites to Portal the Freedom space station around Saturn in an effort to take part in a Joining with the Jaridian Balvak. Getting the aid of Rostok Chairman Mikhail Federov, Da'an used the Portal to journey to the Human space station after which he provided Federov with a cold fusion energy source to provide the Freedoms power grid with enough energy to allow for intergalactic Portal travel. After the failure of the Joining, Da'an along with Renee Palmer and Chairman Federov to escape the station before it was destroyed. (Episode: Summit)
Atavus
After forming an alliance with the Atavus, one of the first acts that Ronald Sandoval did was scrambling the frequency of the motherships Portals. This prevented anyone from accessing them or initially tracking their usage. Furthermore, the Portals were used to abduct high ranking and influential human beings so that they could be turned into Atavus hybrids in order to further Howlyn's agenda. (Episode: The Seduction) However, after the discovery by the Earth of the Atavus threat, measures were made to combat them and their hybrids. This saw the introduction of DNA scanners at Portal stations in order to detect the presence of any Human with Atavus DNA. (Episode: Bad Genes)
Background
The technology worked on the principles of interdimensional travel and worked by folding space from one point to another by bringing them close to each other so that travel was instantaneous. (Episode: Interview) This technology not only allowed for global travel but journeys to distant galaxies. (Episode: Volunteers) The advanced power generation of the Taelons allowed them to create small hand held reactors that could empower normal Portals with intergalactic travel capabilities. (Episode: Summit) Whilst typically a safe method of travel, there existed several devices that were able to create a gravitational imbalance which killed the users whilst they were in interdimensional space. (Episode: Subterfuge)
It was possible to scan interdimensional space in order to track down individuals that used the Portals. (Episode: Legacy) Furthermore, individuals skilled in the technology were able to redirect certain Portals to different locations or even locking them so that users could not make use of the devices. (Episode: Summit) Whilst strictly transportation tools, proper modification to a Portal allowed it to even go through time. (Episode: Legacy)
There were various variants of the technology ranging from massive cargo versions to personal types to even portable portals. One of the largest Portals being able to transport submarines in the sea from one point to another. (Episode: Unearthed) There were also a cargo variant used in freight complexes that were used to move massive containers from one part of the world to another. (Episode: Thicker than Blood) Another form of portable were deployable versions which were known as ID Darts that were placed within a rocket launcher mechanism and shot at targets. Once fired, the tip of the dart embedded itself in a wall and deployed itself into a Portal configuration allowing for access into a distant or restricted location. (Episode: Abduction) Taelon shuttles furthermore had the capacity to launch larger deployable portable Portals that were dropped into regions in order to quickly deploy ground troops at a contested location. (Episode: Epiphany) One of the smaller forms of Portals were portable handheld versions that were hidden in a canister-like device and after pressing a button, the device launched downwards and quickly reconfigured itself into a Portal array. (Episode: First Breath) This type of Portal usually self destructed after its use in order to prevent anyone from using it. An even smaller version consisted of thin rope-like materials that were bent into a Portal configuration. (Episode: Termination) Perhaps one of the more unique versions included a type of spray that was used on a wall in order to create a Portal style array which required the addition of power nodes in the shape in order to make use of it. (Episode: Honor and Duty)
Through the use of their Interdimensional technology, the Taelons would have allowed instantenous access around the world through the portals which provided a new means of transit for Humans. Though initially a benevolent project, it slowly became corrupted for use by Zo'or who began using it to gather genetic information in order to find a way to extend the life of their species as well as further manipulate Humanity.
Portal locations allowed access between Los Angeles and New York. Another from New York to London while a planned route was being made for Moscow and New Delhi. Upon entering into the system, a scanner makes a quick scan of the individual before entering the portal platform after which they are placed in temporarily stasis for travel. When used for genetic experimentation, these individuals would be routed to the moon where experiments were conducted after which they were sent to their destination. Explanations were given that the process took sometime before transit was complete which made the participants unaware of what actually was going on.
Highly intelligent people as well as influential individuals were implanted with CVI implants while females of child bearing age were manipulated so that an artificially created fetus was implanted in their bodies. Once the fetus developed to a certain stage, the Taelon scientists would typically remove it during the next portal travel; the reason for doing so is never explained.
