History

Original Timeline

They were created in the realm of Outworld at an unknown time through the merger of a race from that dimension and the Netherrealm. After that time, they began to populate the Wastelands of Outworld where they lived a nomadic existence and were assembled in large hordes to serve Emperor Shao Kahn. A number of them were dispatched to serve as guards on Shang Tsung's island in Earthrealm during the Mortal Kombat Tournaments.

Within Outworld, the walled city of Lei Chen resisted the commands of Shao Kahn with its governor refusing to serve him. As a result, Kahn had commanded Baraka and Mileena to put down this rebellion. This saw a horde of Tarkata assemble outside the city intending to force the governor to surrender otherwise they would destroy it. During this time, Mileena encountered an Earthrealm warrior named Shujinko and enlisted his aid in delivering the message to the governor to surrender. Shujinko did deliver the message but the governor refused to sacrifice himself thus potentially meaning that the city of Lei Chen faced destruction. The governor asked Shujinko's aid in getting the assistance of Seido the Realm of Order who had long opposed Shao Kahn where he was supposed to offer an artifact to them. Shujinko acquired the relic that turned out to be a Kamidogu with his benefactor Damashi commanding that the artifact not be handed over to Seido. Instead, Shujinko upon meeting the Seidan Guard was to offer control of Lei Chen to the Realm of Order. Hotaru of the Seidan Guard accepted and led his warriors to Lei Chen where they repelled the Tarkatan invaders. Afterwards, an angry Baraka brought Shujinko to his Tarkatan encampment where he desired revenge on the Earthrealm warrior but sparred with him and was defeated. This led to him allowing Shujinko to leave with his life but warned that he did not want to see him again. After the apparent death of Shao Kahn, the Deadly Alliance of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi were defeated by the return of the Dragon King. With Onaga resurrected, he claimed control over Outworld with the Tarata flocking to his banner.

Reboot Timeline

With the death of Shao Kahn, Milneena claimed the throne as Kahnum of Outworld with the Tarkata loyal to her. She was, however, deposed by Kotal Kahn though she continued to lead a rebellion against his forces. Baraka and the Tarkata remained loyal to her where they engaged in various strikes against Kotal Kahn's forces.

Overview

Tarkata entering into a frenzy.

In appearance, they were humanoid in shape and possessed a skin tone similar to humans but that was where the differences ended. Their faces were demonic with sharp death and vicious looking eyes as well as sharp spikes protruding from parts of their body. The arms of the Tarkata held bone blades which were capable of being extended and use as weapons in combat. They were strong enough to pierce through stone allowing them to climb walls as well as cleaving through flesh with ease. Their sense of smell was very accute allowing them to determine a persons identity with ease.

The race were known to be brutal warriors who were vicious in combat. When attacking, they cleaved enemies apart, used living opponents as catapult ammunition and even ripped their necks open with their sharp teeth. Their species believed in serving the strong and the powerful which meant that they often switched their loyalties to whoever was the dominating force in the realms.

Concentrated Tarkatan essence thrown onto an individual had the result of the local Tarkata percieving the person as a rival male. In such circumstances, they vicious and ruthlessly killed the competitor.

Notes

  • In Mortal Kombat X, a fight sequence between Baraka and D'Vorah had it mentioned that the Tarkata were native to another realm that was conquered by Shao Kahn potentially meaning that a new origin was given to them.
