Cyborg (Hank Henshaw)

Main Article: Hank Henshaw

Originally Hank Henshaw, a scientist and astronaut who led a team of three others in testing an experimental spacecraft, the Excalibur. Intense exposure to radiation led to them crashing their ship, and resulted in radical- and, they soon discovered, fatal- mutations to the group. Henshaw gained increasing intelligence, but his body began to lose substance and rotted away. With help from Superman, he was able to save his wife just before vanishing.

However, he had actually turned into a disembodied intelligence, capable of entering and reshaping any kind of machinery. He attempted to make contact with his wife again by shaping a robot body, but only succeeded in worsening her fragile psychological state. Ultimately, Henshaw projected himself into the empty ship that brought Superman to Earth, absorbing data from it, before leaving Earth for parts unknown.

Some time later, Henshaw found himself on a world ruled by Mongul. By this time, Henshaw had become mentally unstable, and blamed Superman for his plight. More or less forcing Mongul's cooperation, he hatched a plan. After Superman was slain by the monstrous Doomsday, Henshaw reshaped himself into a cybernetic duplicate of Superman, even replicating the Last Son of Krypton's DNA using the information absorbed from his ship. Heading to Earth, he posed as a resurrected Superman, and managed to gain the most public acceptance out of the four "replacement" Supermen.

It was at this time that he initiated his plan. He had Mongul destroy Coast City and begin building a station there that would eventually convert the Earth into a new War World. He continued to act as a hero, using his status to prevent the other superheroes from doing anything until it was too late. However, he was discovered and battled by Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Steel, Superboy, Supergirl and the true, newly resurrected Superman. The real Superman was able to destroy the Cyborg's body.

However, his mind survived, and the Cyborg would plague Superman's life for years to come.
