History

Avengers Mansion

It was said to had been built in 1932 by Howard Stark where it eventually passed to his grandson Tony Stark. (Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes v1 #1)

The newly formed Avengers gathered together for the first step in the Stark owned mansion after their initial adventure against Loki. Whilst there, the mansion was infiltrated by a member of the Space Phantoms who used his ability to change form to cause dissension among the ranks of the superhero team. (Avengers v1 #2)

After the Onslaught disaster, the Avengers were disbanded and the mansion was turned over to S.H.I.E.L.D. to serve as their New York base of operations. When the heroes returned, it was turned over to the Maria Stark Foundation and once again became the home of the superhero team when they reformed. In this time, the world was in turmoil with the destruction in Asgard that brought attacks from many of the races in the nine realms. The Avengers then called a meeting of heroes as they were briefed by Thor of the danger of many threats from Asgard having been transported to Midgard. (Avengers v3 #1)

After the defeat of Norman Osborn, the mansion was renovated and gifted to Luke Cage for a dollar in order for it to be the headquarters of his branch of the Avengers. Victoria Hand was assigned to help provide some oversight as Cage began recruiting heroes so that they could do some good in the world whilst the others operated from Stark Tower. (New Avengers v2 #1) The Mansion was badly damaged in the battle against Agamotto which saw the death of Brother Voodoo. Damage Control came in to repair the building with them being paid by Commander Steve Rogers for the job whilst Cage assembled his new team of Avengers. (New Avengers v2 #7) The Mansion was later attacked by Wonder Man and his team of Revengers that sought to forcibly disband the New Avengers. (New Avengers Annual v2 #1) The Mansion later come attack during the events of Fear Itself when Nazi forces under Sin began attacking people around the world after the release of the Serpent. (New Avengers v2 #15) Squirrel Girl and Danielle Cage were saved by the intervention of Daredevil who defeated the attackers before ushering the pair into the underground bunker beneath the mansion. As gratitude for his actions, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones invited him to join their incarnation of the New Avengers which he accepted. (New Avengers v2 #16) After Fear Itself, anti-superhero sentiment had grown with this being stoked by Norman Osborn who placed the blame on the Avengers. This saw a large protest against the superhero team from civilians that erupted into a riot. After the New Avengers battled the Dark Avengers, the heroes returned to the mansion when the U.S. army arrived on the scene where they were seizing the building under orders from the federal government. (New Avengers v2 #21) After Osborn's defeat, protests still continued outside the Mansion where the Avengers gathered to hear of the approach of the Phoenix Force. (New Avengers v2 #24) Afterwards, Jennifer Kale was killed with Victoria Hand deemed as the killer with the FBI attempted to arrest her. She was killed along with the lead FBI agent leading to a lockdown of the site as Doctor Strange was deemed the person responsible for the deaths. (New Avengers v2 #33)

After the Phoenix Crisis, a new team of Avengers was formed in the Unity Division that were to have Mutant members as a sign of cooperation with the X-Men. (Uncanny Avengers v1 #5)

Johnny Storm used his assets to buy back Avengers Mansion that became part of Avengers Mansion Inc. that was a special holding company with diversified assets and investments set to operate in perpetuity. This allowed the insurance, utilities, taxes and the housekeeping staff to be paid forever. In the aftermath, the Unity Squad began their attempts at reconstructing the mansion and restoring the statues of the founders. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #30)

Ultron Pym later returned to Earth where he operated from the secret tunnels beneath Avengers Mansion. He intended to create a bride worthy of his new form and began experiments in molecule fusion where he merged an organic being with a mechanical one into something like himself. The intention was to create a bride in such a manner with him intending to conduct a similar process on Janet van Dyne and Jocasta. To achieve his goal, he took control over Jarvis and had him help in the capture of Janet whilst Ultron himself took Jocasta. Iron Man and his allies came to learn of his and confronted the cyborg in the underground laboratory where they attempted to stop him. (Tony Stark: Iron Man v1 #16)

Overview

Part of the defensive system included hidden robotic arms that responded to those that lacked clearance to enter the property. These arms were constructed from super-strong Carbonadium alloy making them highly durable and able to respond to intruders. (She-Hulk v1 #3) Under its lockdown mode, the building became a secure building designed to keep enemies out. (New Avengers v2 #15)
