Biography

Origin

Bane in Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1.

Bane

His heavily pregnant mother was brought to Santa Prisca to the prison of Pena Duro (Translation: The Hard Stone) where the unborn child was to be charged with the crimes of his father under the medieval codes of the island nation. Due to being a male child, he came to fall under Santa Priscan law and made to serve out his life sentence. Similarly, his mother was sent to reside in the prison walls where she was her son's guardian. As he grew, he along with his mother were in the protective care of the infirmary but she to waste away in the prison. The young boy came to learn life within the prison and knew every corner of Pena Duro including the harsh life amongst its prisoners where he saw them murdering one another. By his 6th birthday, his mother had given up on life and passed away in the infirmary where she was denied a Christian funeral and instead her body was thrown into the shark infested waters around the island. After his mothers death, the warden had the boy placed within the general population and forced to fend for himself. (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1)

As a child, he came to meet a Jesuit priest named Father Orestes where he would talk for hours with the man about books and the history of the world. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #1)

One day, he became curious about Gotham City and asked Bird about it who told him that it was the greatest city in the world. Bane then asked who ruled it to which Bird told him about the mysterious vigilante called the Batman who ruled the night and targeted criminals. This intrigued him and sparked his interest in meeting the Dark Knight. (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1)

Knightfall

Seeking to test himself, he decided to challenge one of Batman's most formidable foes which was Killer Croc where he easily bested the villain and broke several of his bones. Though Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder were present on the scene but Bane was quick to determine that this was not the true Batman where he left the scene rather than engage in a fight with them. (Batman v1 #483)

Later, he wanted to test Batman and he used the Riddler to do so. Injecting Venom to the criminal, Bane turned Riddler into a ripped version of himself, giving Batman not only a classical mental challenge by Riddler, but also a physical challenge. (Batman v1 #490)

In the meantime, Bane started being noticed among the criminals of Gotham and when Mad Hatter sent a mind-controlled Film Freak to find him, Bane showed his superiority by killing Film Freak. (Batman v1 #492)

Croc damaged Bane's venom pumping machine while Bane broke Croc's arm again. (Detective Comics v1 #660) They were dragged by the water current to the river, where Bane left an unconscious Croc. (Batman v1 #494)

After his last encounter with Bane's henchmen and running himself to exhaustion, Batman returned to Wayne Manor, where Bane had knocked Alfred unconscious and was waiting for him. (Detective Comics v1 #663)

He fought Batman in the Batcave, defeated him and as the coup de grâce, broke Batman's back and left him paraplegic, thereby having been the only man to have "Broken the Bat". (Batman v1 #497)

Afterwards, Bane took Batman to Downtown Gotham and tossed his broken body in the middle of the street. (Detective Comics v1 #664)

With Batman out of the way, Bane started to take out all the leaders of gangs and organized crime in Gotham with help from his thugs and recruiting all their men. He even tried to recruit Catwoman to his army of crime, but she refused to work for him. (Batman v1 #498) Not long after this, Bane became aware of a new Batman and he sent his henchmen to verify who was the impostor, but they failed and were captured by the police. (Batman v1 #499) The next night, Bane was surprised to see them back at their hideout and as soon as he learned that someone had released them without his consent, Bane realized they had been tricked. The new Batman showed up in their hideout and after taking down Bane's henchmen, the fight between them started. Bane and the new Batman struggled for a while until Bane got the upper hand. (Detective Comics v1 #666) Batman managed to escape and Bane was forced to retreat before the police arrived. Bane looked for more venom for his next encounter with Batman and once ready, he challenged the impostor to a final fight. Bane confronted the new Batman, who was wearing a new battle armor and the fight was even as Bane used venom to increase his strength. Unfortunately, Batman cut the hoses connecting to Bane's system, eliminating the venom supply. After this, Batman beat Bane to a pulp and when Bane had no strength left to fight, Batman allowed the police to capture Bane, after which he was sent to Blackgate Penitentiary. (Batman v1 #500)

While locked in Blackgate along with all the Arkham inmates he released, Bane remained in a catatonic state for months, but the night Bruce Wayne returned to his rightful place as Batman, Bane recovered, knowing that his dreaded enemy was back. (Robin v2 #8)

Vengeance of Bane

Following those events Bane recovered from his Venom addiction while serving time in prison. He eventually escaped and returned to Gotham, where he fought alongside Batman to take out a criminal ring that was distributing a Venom derivative to street-level thugs. Following a victory over the criminals, Bane proclaimed that he was 'innocent' of his past crimes and urged Batman to stop hunting him. He then left Gotham without fighting Batman to begin a search for his father. (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #2) Bane's search brings him back to Santa Prisca. In search of leads, Bane questions the Jesuit priest who had taught him while he was in Peña Duro. He then returned to Santa Prisca where he approached Father Orestes where he asked the priest on whether he knew Bane's biological father. From the records, Orestes came to determine that it was one of four men that the Santa Prisca tribunal had sought to convict. These included Sebastian who was known as el Jefe de Pais, a North American doctor, an English mercenary and a Swiss revolutionary. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #1) He later sought out the immortal Ra's al Ghul and came into the service of the Demon's Head. This saw him taking the role of Ubu and he came to be considered a potential husband for his daughter Talia al Ghul. Thus, the two were to be wed after Ra's al Ghul had used the Wheel of Plagues to create a disease that would purge much of the world's population. (Detective Comics v1 #700) Ra's also has discovered Bane's father's identity, but did not reveal this information to him. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #1) Ra's al Ghul then launched a plague attack on Gotham with Bane at his side, who vegan posing as Ra's al Ghul's henchman Ubu. During this time, Batman came to confront Bane and face a rematch with the villain where he finally defeats him in single combat. Disappointed by his protegé's failure, Ra's calls off the engagement to Talia and disowns Bane. (Detective Comics v1 #701) Bane later held Gotham ransom with a mobile nuclear plant for two million dollars, but was again defeated. (Batman: Bane v1 #1)

Bane had a run-in with Black Canary while trying to destroy a Lazarus Pit in his quest to deny Ra's al Ghul his immortality. (Birds of Prey v1 #26) Afterwards, he continued his campaign of destroying the Lazarus Pits around the world. Ultimately, one came to escape his efforts to find it with Bane believing it to be the source for all the pits. Bane returned to Gotham where he went to stately Wayne Manor in order to enlist the aid of Batman. Despite the reservations of the Bat Family, Batman agreed to help Bane where they consulted Jason Blood who used magic to locate the last pit. (Batman: Gotham Knights v1 #33)

Bane and the Society massed in Metropolis. They were confronted by an army of virtually every hero on Earth, and the heroes and villains engaged in an epic battle. (Villains United: Infinite Crisis Special v1 #1) During the Battle for Metropolis, he joined the world's supervillains in fighting its heroes where he fought against Judomaster with him breaking the back of the martial artist. (Infinite Crisis v1 #7)

Bane was part of the Suicide Squad where he was tasked with gathering supervillain criminals and sending them to a distant uninhabited world via Boom Tube. Thus, it was believed that these exiled villains would no longer cause harm on Earth. He and Deadshot were present as they escorted one of the final groups awaiting transportation only for Rick Flagg to betray them where he sent the pair to be marooned on that world as well. (Salvation Run v1 #2)

Secret Six

He later came to join a new incarnation of the Secret Six under the leadership of Scandal Savage. She came to accept a mission given to them whereby they were to take a package from the vigilante Tarantula Catalina Flores. (Secret Six v3 #1) They infiltrated a prison that held her prisoner where they had to fight against rioting supervillains. (Secret Six v3 #2) The group held her at a safehouse but were surrounded by other villains who had been hired to get a special card in her possession. Whilst there, they were confronted by the Cheetah Barbara Minerva who offered to let them leave in exchange for the card. The Secret Six refused with Bane attempting to stop Minerva but she easily overpowered him. They were only able to escape her by tricking Bolt into thinking that Cheetah had taken the card. Whilst escaping, they came to learn about the true nature of the card that allowed the bearers soul to escape from Hell for free. (Secret Six v3 #3) Debating on the cards use, they later travelled to an old acquaintance of Scandal named Jeannette who allowed the Secret Six to stay with her. Whilst there, Bane found that Junior and their henchmen had infiltrated the building where they took him hostage. Meanwhile, Jeannette had betrayed her friend and allowed various people into her home in order for them to claim the card for themselves. (Secret Six v3 #4)

As part of the team, Bane was joined by Catman and Ragdoll on a mission to stop criminals in Gotham City after Batman's death. Catman and Bane had a discussion about their suitable positions to take place as Gotham's vigilantes. Their hopes however, were crushed when Nightwing banished them from Gotham and they decided to move on as the Secret Six. (Secret Six v3 #9)

Driven to near madness, Bane decides to lead the Secret Six to Gotham in an attempt to psychologically break Batman by killing several of his closest allies. The team kidnaps the Penguin, who Bane pumps for information about Batman's partners. (Secret Six v3 #35)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of history was created with a different timeline of events.

According to one account, his father was a revolutionary who stood up for the people against the government with his cunning always allowing him to escape them. However, his son came to take his place and came to grow up in Pena Duro prison. As his legend and power grew in Santa Prisca, he heard tell of Gotham City - a place of dark madness that was said to be untamable. He, however was possessed of the desire to take it and tame it. The city had a protector in Batman, though, who he had briefly fought in the past once before. (Batman v2 #23.4)

With Batman being reported dead Bane planned to strike Gotham City and conquer it. To prepare he refined his Venom and tested it by inviting some of his hired hands to his home and demanding they try their best to kill him of be killed instead. Batman brutally slaughtered them, and when he was about to kill the last man he realized the man’s daughter had snuck into his house. Bane assumed it was a ploy for him to show mercy, but the girl told Bane her father beat her and her family and she wanted to watch him die. After Bane broke the man’s back the girl took Bane’s hand and said he was her hero. Bane warned her he’d kill her too if she ever touched him again. Bane and his captains Malicia and Brute loaded tanks of venom, an artillery and a small army onto a boat. Bane told the captain of the ship he wanted to reach Gotham within two days or he’d start executing the ship’s crew. Bane orchestrated a prison break at Blackgate, having sent some of his men in advance to join the prison as corrections officers. Bane’s men freed the prisoners, killed the legitimate guards and confronted warden Agatha Zorbatos. The Arkham Asylum inmates had also gotten free, and Bane didn’t want them interfering in his plan, so he had Malicia fly ahead to Gotham City in a helicopter. She had a dose of Venom and was instructed to give it to one of Bane’s guards so he could hunt down the Scarecrow. Bane wanted to make an example of him so the Arkham inmates would know they couldn’t interfere with him without major losses. As Bane’s ship arrived on Gotham’s coast he gave a speech to his men. Bane called them his apostles and said he was sending them to Gotham to show Santa Priscan dominance and violence. He thanked his men for helping him fulfill his destiny. (Batman v2 #23.4)

At some point, Bane had formed a secret alliance with the former Grandmaster of the Court of Owls with this being Sebastian Clark. They had intended depose the current ruler of the Court where they planned to manipulate former Talon Calvin Rose for this task. However, he came to learn the true nature of Clark's plans and turned against him with Bane snapping the man's neck. Bane then returned to his island with Clark where he believed that Calvin Rose was too weak for their purpose. Instead, he had built an army on Santa Prisca which he intended to use to defeat both the Batman and the Court of Owls allowing him to take over Gotham City. (Talon v1 #8)

Initially, he had thought they were sent by the Batman, and sought him out, using a combination of Venom and the fear toxin to both make himself fearless, and, due to the drugs in his system already, make himself smarter than he normally was. (Batman: The Dark Knight v2 #6) After facing a humiliating defeat at the vigilante's hands alongside the aid of the Flash, he learned that the Talons had absolutely nothing to do with Batman outside of being his enemies. (Batman: The Dark Knight v2 #7)

This brought him into conflict with the in-mates of Arkham Asylum who were similarly making their own attempt at claiming Gotham City. (Forever Evil: Arkham War v1 #1) Knowing the lunatics of Arkham feared only one thing, Bane built his own Batsuit and competed with Scarecrow to steal the Court of Owl's collection of undead Talons to use in their own army. This plan was a bust, though, when Batman-Bane was distracted by a challenge from Killer Croc, who he defeated inside Wayne Enterprises and threw off the top of the building. (Forever Evil: Arkham War v1 #3) Only being able to secure one Talon, Bane woke William Cobb, who willingly joined him in order free Cobb's Talon brothers from Arkham's mind control. The war lead Bane to the gates of Arkham where he found himself face-to-face with Scarecrow's army, themselves drugged with Bane's precious Venom. He battled the remainder of the Arkham army until they were all defeated and Bane declared himself the victor of the Arkham War. (Forever Evil: Arkham War v1 #6) After the defeat of the Crime Syndicate, the real Batman returned to Gotham and subdued his impersonator and sending him to the newly renovated Arkham Asylum. (Forever Evil Aftermath: Batman vs. Bane v1 #1)

When Arkham Asylum collapsed after the defeat of Deacon Blackfire by the Spectre, Bane was one of the inmates trapped inside. (Batman Eternal v1 #30) Following the collapse, Bane rescued Alfred Pennyworth, and the two tried to escape the rubble. After being confronted by some of Deacon Blackfire's cult followers in the escape tunnels underneath Arkham, the duo reached the entrance to an underground Batcave, but Alfred spoke a secret code word that released a chemical to incapacitate Bane before heading inside himself. (Batman Eternal v1 #31) Having escaped Arkham, Bane was approached by Scarecrow of all people, his enemy in the Arkham War, to participate in a partnership. Though Bane was opposed, he only agreed to even spare Scarecrow's life if Crane would agree to upgrade his Venom. After their meeting and behind Scarecrow's back, Poison Ivy approached Bane with an offer to upgrade his Venom instead, believing she was a better chemist for the job. (Batman Eternal v1 #37) Bane and Ivy worked together and prepared to ambush Batman in the sewers. However, Bane soon realized that he had fallen in love with Ivy, obviously because he was being poisoned by her toxins. Swearing he'd kill her for double crossing him, Poison Ivy escaped, their partnership terminated, leading to Bane being ambushed by Killer Croc on his home turf. Having had time to think of a strategy for a rematch since they fought in the Arkham War, Croc aimed for Bane's veins, wanting to bleed the Venom out of him. Bane was successfully defeated and left in the sewers, his blood used to write the words "Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi" on the walls for when Batman would find him. (Batman Eternal v1 #38) Bane did not stay in custody long and was back on the streets fighting in an underground wrestling tournament before long. (Batman Eternal v1 #48) Batman made one last effort to finally restrain all the inmates that escaped, apprehended Bane, and had him sent to the new temporary asylum Arkham Manor before going to confront the mastermind that had orchestrated the chaos in Gotham to start with. (Batman Eternal v1 #50)

It was revealed that he had been trading Venom to Professor Hugo Strange in exchange for the services of the Psycho-Pirate, who was helping him overcome his addiction to the substance. Strange then used the Venom to revive the corpses of several of his patients. (Batman v3 #6) Batman, per the suggestion of Amanda Waller, undertakes a suicide mission to Santa Prisca aided by Catwoman, the Bronze Tiger, the Ventriloquist, and the clown couple Punch and Jewellee to take the Psycho-Pirate from Bane. Batman needs the Psycho-Pirate to undo the damage he caused to Gotham Girl, and each member of the team will receive some sort of reward for their efforts. (Batman v3 #10)

In the aftermath, he was kept detained at a wing in Arkham Asylum where his mind was seemingly broken as a result of his earlier encounter with Batman. However, this was simply part of his plan to rule Gotham from within the prison and orchestrated his attacks against Batman from there. (Batman v3 #59)

He was later visited in secret by Cressida Clarke who was looking to expose the secret criminal Network that was creating soldiers for various underworld interests. Among their experiments included the creation of a female clone of Bane to be used by the Santa Priscans. Cressida had the knowledge but lacked the means to topple the Network and thus approached Bane where she proposed they work together. To that end, she arranged for events to help in his escape from his prison where she intended to use the Joker as a scapegoat in an attack on Arkham Asylum where in the chaos Bane would escape with a body double prepared to make it appear that he died in the assault. (The Joker v2 #14) Afterwards, the Asylum was subjected to a Joker Toxin attack that was responsible for killing 500 people that included staff and prisoners. Among the day included Bane who seemingly died from exposure to the gas in a brutal event that came to be regarded in Gotham as A-Day. (Infinite Frontier v1 #0) Following his death, people began to use the symbol of Bane as a sign of strength and as a rallying cry with banners as well as art of him being put up in Little Santa Prisca. (The Joker v2 #1) With his death, the corrupt heads of Santa Prisca looked to engineer a new Bane born from his genetic stock and meant to be addicted to Venom where this became his daughter called Vengeance. (The Joker v2 #8) Meanwhile, the suspected Bane's remains were taken by a secret black ops group called Task Force Z where he was revived as an undead zombie using Lazarus Resin. Bane came to be one of a number of recently deceased supervillains that were sent on field missions where they were overseen by their handler Red Hood. (Task Force Z v1 #1) In disguise, Bane accompanied Cressida as they worked to eliminate the Network's operations. (The Joker v2 #14)

Personality and attributes

Once, whilst in service to Ra's al Ghul, he came to take the masked identity of Ubu. (Detective Comics v1 #700)

Life in Pena Duro had made him as hard as the prison with him not crying after the death of his mother as he felt she was too weak to live in such a place. (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1)

Bane believed that strength was not measured in pounds but rather in the mind. According to him, strength was the art of exerting one's will upon the world and reshaping it to their own image. (Talon v1 #8) It was said that he was a cruel and mean person who felt absolutely justified in every act he did. (Batman: Gotham Knights v1 #33)

He claimed that he won his fights against his enemies because he respected his prey. (Batman v2 #23.4) Bane had claimed once that he had only ever considered two people his equal with these being Batman and the other being the Demon Ra's al Ghul. (Detective Comics v1 #701)

Bane had said that he found it unseemly to harass prisoners. (Secret Six v3 #3)

To Santa Priscans, Bane was said to carry the soul of Santa Prisca in his hands. (Batman v2 #23.4)

His mother had been the head of a provincial rebel cell that had opposed the corrupt Santa Priscan government. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #1) He had said that never got to enjoy the luxury of family. (Batman: Gotham Knights v1 #33)

As a child in prison, he carried a teddy bear he called Osito (Spanish: "little bear") which he had considered his only friend. (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1)

On Santa Prisca, one influential person on his life was Father Orestes who would visit the prisoners at Pena Duro which was where a young Bane had met the Jesuit priest. Orestes came to be blinded by one of the inmates named Tigre and for this crime Bane had crushed the man's skull. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #1)

For a time, the immortal Ra's al Ghul had considered Bane to be a suitable mate for his daughter Talia al Ghul where the pair were to inherit the Earth after he had purged its surface. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #4)

He came to drawn to Scandal Savage where he could feel her pain and believed that she required the love of a father in her life. (Secret Six v3 #2) This saw him becoming very protective of her and he claimed that she was a delicate flower. (Secret Six v3 #4)

Scientists commissioned at Santa Prisca used Bane as a template to create a female soldier thus creating his 'daughter' who was given the codename Vengeance. (The Joker v2 #8)

Powers and abilities

Within Pena Duro, he went through an intense physical regime in improving his body where he did a thousand push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups a day. Instead of sleep, he used to meditate for four hours at night (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1) Ra's al Ghul came to note that Bane possessed a mind equal to the greatest he had ever known in his long life as an immortal. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #4) In fact, he was noted as being one of two men to had beaten him in chess with the other person capable of this feat being the Joker. (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight v1 #143)

He was capable of committing knowledge to memory which he did so eidetically whereby he was able to memorise pages of text. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #4)

durable enough that if someone with a wooden baseball bat struck him, the bat would break against him. (Batman: Bane of the Demon v1 #1)

On Santa Prisca, he became a test subject in the army's experiments in the use of the drug known as Venom. He came to survive injections that killed five other test subjects whose hearts exploded from use. This pleased the people in charge who then performed surgery on Bane that led to implants in his skull through which the drug could be administered directly into his brain. The super-steroid drug was noted for its complexity yet ease through which it could be replicated. Within the body, it stimulated the adrenal glands whilst another ingredient targeted the corpus callosum segment of the brain thus fusing its right and left hemispheres. (Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1) He was able to activate the mechanism that injected him with Venom through a button on his hand. Once activated, he gained a high degree of strength allowing him to easily overpower some of his foes and allowed him to break their bones. (Batman v1 #483)

He came to form an army of followers on Santa Prisca which he fashioned in his own image. (Talon v1 #8) With them, he gained the power that he intended to set fire to the whole world. (Batman v2 #23.4)

Notes

• Bane was created by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench and Graham Nolan where he made his first appearance in Batman: Vengeance of Bane v1 #1 (January, 1993).
• Artist Graham Nolan in The Washington Post commented on the characters creation, "Actually, Chuck Dixon came up the idea for an evil "Doc Savage" and I designed the character."
• Writer Chuck Dixon said in an interview that, "Since I was so skeptical about our success, Denny assigned me to come up with the origin of this character, who we were calling Doc Toxic at the time, and write an extra-length special for me. I think Denny was relying on my obsessive approach to this stuff. He knew I’d sweat it. The name “Bane” popped out at me while looking through a thesaurus to compile a list of possible names. That’s the name I kept coming back to when I thought of him and I eventually brought everyone else around to calling him that."

Alternate Versions

• In Old Lady Harley v1 #3 (2018), an alternate version of the character appeared in a post-apocalyptic future where the villains ruled the world. On this Earth, Bane suffered from a partially crippled body due to years of Venom abuse leaving his body near skeletal in frame. By this point, he had a pair of daughters who operated in similar costumes as him and were known as the Bane Twins. He oversaw a gladiatorial arena where contestants fought one another within the ring.

• In The Batman, Bane was an antagonist in the animated series where he was a number of appearances with him being voiced by different actors. This version was a South American mercenary that was a slim man in an all black bodysuit and had a Venom injector control on his hand that transformed him into a huge red skinned super-strong individual. In "Traction", he was voiced actor Joaquim de Almeida where he was hired by three crime bosses who wanted someone to eliminate Batman. In "Team Penguin", he was voiced by actor Ron Perlman and was part of a crime crew assembled by the Penguin. In "The Batman/Superman Story", he was voiced by actor Clancy Brown in Part 1 where he was hired along with a number of other Gotham criminals to ambush Superman.
• In Young Justice, Bane appeared in the setting of the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Danny Trejo.
• In Harley Quinn, Bane appeared in the setting of the comedy animated television series where he was voiced by actor James Adomian.

Films

• In Batman and Robin, Bane appeared as a minor antagonist with no dialogue in the live-action film where he was portrayed by former wrestler Robert "Jeep" Swenson. This version was identified in background material as Antonio Diego.
• In Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Bane had a brief appearance in the animated film with no dialogue. He was among several supervillains that tried to claim the billion dollar bounty on Superman. During a fight with Batman, the Dark knight used a Batarang to knock out Bane's Venom tube whereupon he defeated him with a single kick.
• In The Dark Knight Rises, Bane appeared as a leading antagonist in the live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Tom Hardy.

• In Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, Bane appeared in the setting of the action-adventure video game where he was once again voiced by actor Héctor Elizondo.
• In DC Universe Online, Bane appeared in the setting of the MMORPG where he was voiced by actor E. Jason Liebrecht.
• In Young Justice: Legacy, Bane appeared in the setting of the video game tie-in to the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Eric Lopez.
• In Injustice: Gods Among Us, Bane appeared as a playable character in the setting of the fighting video game where he was voiced by actor Fred Tatasciore.
• In Injustice 2, Bane appeared once again in the setting of the fighting video game where he was once more voiced again by actor Fred Tatasciore.
